Mayor to announce plans to expand successful Shotstoppers program into new areas

WHAT: Press conference to announce plans to expand the City of Detroit’s successful ShotStoppers community violence intervention (CVI) program with the addition of two new groups.
The ShotStoppers initiative currently is funded with $10 million from President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan. The expansion is made possible largely thanks to the new Public Safety Trust Fund included by Governor Whitmer and state legislators in the State of Michigan FY25 budget, as well as an additional $1 million of investment from ARPA.
The City is issuing requests for proposals from community groups to have new partners identified in anticipation of State Senate approval of the Trust Fund this fall.
Through ShotStoppers, community groups implement their own violence reduction strategy in a specific CVI Zone they select, often focusing on engaging individuals at greatest risk of involvement in violence and helping them pursue a new path. The City recently announced third quarter results that showed a 30-70% violence reduction in areas covered by ShotStopper groups.
