It was so good that Maynard announced his soloists and band members. As these are now saved for posterity forever. Was just thinking to myself, "Gee that cat's a great jazz player, I wonder if he is Carl Fischer"? And a second later The Boss says, "CARL FISCHER"!! So cool.

Carl, Patrick and Keith in the trumpet section. Saw this version of the band at Oneonta State U, the first week of Keith's time on the band.

08:53 to 9:20 - one of THEE best all-time captures of MF's swinging Latin-style jazz chops and extreme high register daring-do - and he sure dared and DID there!!! How that man and his great bands could literally blow you away when you heard and saw them live and up close. Thank you for the MANY exciting Maynard Ferguson videos, Twisted Trails! They sure help keep his legacy alive.

Huh ? Here Maynard is 76 years old and 20 years past his prime in the 60s , 70s , 80s. While he still sounded good in his final years he was no match for the younger version of himself. Unfortunately the largest numbers of Maynard fans were minted in the 70s and 80s and didn't have much of a chance to see MF live in those primetime decades. A lot of recordings exist but it wasn't a substitute for live viewing. Keep in mind that at his peak in the 70s MF did two shows a night almost every night in addition to clinics and lessons and rehearsals and practice time. And every song was high and loud and often very fast. Mind-blowing every note. At Warfield SF we used to pay for both shows we couldn't get enough. And if you don't agree that MF was the king of the upper register please know that sometimes his leads would buckle under the stress and start cracking notes and MF would take over lead in addition to solo. I haven't read much about how MF lost control of his weight and physically didn't keep up with his own standards set as a younger man, but high note trumpet is a physical sport and like so many athletes Maynard fell off the optimal edge. Age 40-50 his physical condition was still extremely good and his technical mastery had reached peak form. His improvisational breadth & depth continued to evolve over the next two decades but his sheer physical powers peaked perhaps at age 50.

@@baltostar1 Yeah exciting as the band is as a whole, he has to pick his moments for sure, and has only a fraction of the stamina and power of earlier years (predictably, he;s 76 ). He was nearly a semitone flat on the Birdland last A.. but who cares? What I find interesting is, when a musician gets into the later years and the old body can;t do what it used to but they still play hard.. the fans insist on saying that the player is "sounding better than ever" and "never sounded so good" etc., when it is just isn't so but is still very entertaining. Dizzy fans were heavy on that, MF as well.

I totally agree... I saw him 3 times in the 70s & 80s and he was a monster!!! Hitting notes that would make you shudder. Always a great showman and always having some cats that could really swing... Last time I saw him, not too long before he gave it up, was a bitter-sweet concert. It was difficult for him to speak and he even brought up his lead trumpet player to play "the songs that made him famous." Sill, I was glad that I was able to see him one more time. Glad we have his audios and videos to keep his music alive. I'll always be a fan.

@@baltostar1 I agree with a lot of this except for his leads cracking and him having to step in. I was lucky enough to see him a couple times and of course the many many videos of him on YT. I never noticed it to be a thing. Doc might be the best example of an aging trumpet player not losing very much. And Arturo.
