Holy shit, sounds like he was on fire for this concert, i always loved that he started his sets that way. I cant believe he didnt get tires of this intro tho, he musta done it for like 50 years.

I first saw Maynard in concert at Culpeper, HS in Virginia in 1977. Full big band, I think Mike Migliore was on sax, Peter Erskine on drums, and Maynard and the whole band were absolutely in the zone that night. The set was close to two hours, and Maynard took MANY extended, screaming, upper-register solos and was in absolute, total, 100% control, and showed the endurance of a monster. A lot of the guys took extended solos as well, and they played out of their minds. I have NEVER, EVER seen/heard anything like it before or since. I think right around this time Maynard was at his peak -- though even into his later years he was never far from it. He was an AMAZING performer, who gave you his very top every single night.

@@rontiemens2553 and at that time I was learning his song which I still keep thinking is called Chamelion! I know how it goes still and it was a vetting ground for a drummer at 13 and I had to try out and I beat all the guys years older than me. I had just met Buddy Rich and at another show a real famous black bluesman bandleader (name? brainfart this second, omg,) both at the same little venue around Disneyland. The next thing I know I'm in 7th or 8th grade and I'm having to play that song on drums for a tryout to become the drummer of Jazz Band 1 versus Jazz Band (level) 2... that's the best I can remember it.. I don't know why Maynard is so seldom mentioned I bring up my past occasionally, few register cognizance with his name

There's a version of Blue Birdland that Maynard did that swung way harder than this one. Tribute band also performed it.
