It was more than just a hockey game, off the ice, it was a cold civil war between the English and French, the former were the oppressive elites, the latter was the majority under oppression. Campbell represented the English elite, he suspended Richard, a French player, after he struck an official who restrained him and allowed an opponent to keep beating him up. Up until that game, Richard was already playing with a short fuse, pulling dirty antics, but in reality was fighting for the French.
