Ordo ad Chao is sooooo fucking dark, it makes DMDS look like a walk in a sunny park. Overall, Mayhem has a great catalogue. Wolf's Lair Abyss is my fav EP of all time. It's just ridiculously ferocious and raw.

Good list but because of the bands legendary history and short discography i would have included the EPs Deathcrush and Wolfs Lair Abyss. Both EPs to me are better than some of the full lengths.

I’m so glad I gave black metal a try, Deathcrush changed my views entirely on what the genre could hold. Then December Moon by Morbid, and well now the rest of Mayhems discography. I may try Darkthrone too, after being into Grindcore and death metal for a good few months im open to most anything haha.

Two good albums by Darkthrone are Transylvanian Hunger and A Blaze In The Northern Sky. I've only heard two Darkthrone albums, but those two are great black metal albums.

Daemon is is also my #2 favorite Mayhem album it has everything I love about this band.

De Mysteriis is great regardless of the dark history of the band. It just sounds evil. I's a superb moody grim black metal masterpiece.

I really hope you come around to Ordo Ad Chao. The production is for sure a learning curve, but it has some of the absolute best songs in their entire catalog with what are possibly Atilla’s most bone-chilling performances. The stretch of Illuminate Eliminate/Psychic Horns/Key To The Storms might be my favorite thing Mayhem has ever done. 1) DMDS 2) Ordo Ad Chao 3) GDOW 4) Deathcrush 5) Esoteric Warfare 6) Chimera 7) WLA 8) Daemon

It took me a bit to come around to ordo ad chao too and i 100% agree with this comment. That stretch of the album is what i somehow missed the first buncha times i heard the album. My 2 favorites are Chimera and Grand Declaration and i was wondering what happened with Blasphemer on this one and later realized i just wasnt listening close enough. Its still probably my #6 or 5 but i like it alot more than i used to.

My Ranking Of The Mayhem Discography (btw, Im norwegian) 1: De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (especially DMDS Alive) - What can I say? It's my favorite Black Metal album of all time! Score: 10/10 - Best song: Freezing Moon 2: Chimera - Their most unique and most creative album they've ever made. Blasphemer is such a mastermind when it comes to guitar riffage! Score: 9.8/10 - Best song: Slaughter Of Dreams or My Death 3: Deathcrush - It was the first REAL Black Metal album that was released, and still to this day, it kicks ass! Score: 9.7/10 - Best song: Chainsaw Gutsfuck 4: Daemon - Teloch wasn't lying when he said that they were going oldschool for this record. This sounds like a sequel to DMDS! Score: 9.5/10 - Best song: Bad Blood 5: Live At Leipzig - Their best live album ever (except for DMDS Alive). Dead was such a real vocalist. Score: 9.3/10 - Best performance: Pure Fucking Armageddon (i think) 6: Esoteric Warfare - The album cover gives me Egypt vibes for some reason. The riffage in this album was really something else. Score: 9/10 - Best song: Watchers 7: Grand Declaration Of War - GDOW is their most experimental album they ever released. Score: 8/10 - Best song: View From Nihil 8: Wolf's Lair Abyss - It used to be my least favorite Mayhem album, but now, I appreciate it even more. Maniac is a beast vocalist. Score: 7/10 - Best song: I Am Thy Labyrinth 9: Ordo Ad Chao - The guitar sound is really murky, and that shouldn't really sound like a problem, but it just sounds like an industrial album with tremolo picking and blast beats really. Score: 5/10 - Best song: Wall Of Water 10: Live In Zeitz - I don't have anything to say about this one really. Score: 5/10 11: Dawn Of The Black Hearts - This gets a 0/10, simply for the album cover. Pelle did not fucking deserve that

Mayhem albums are hard to rank because they are so legendary in the bm scene. 1. De Mysteriis dom Sathanas 2. Live in Leipzig 3. Deathcrush 4. Daemon 5. Grand Declaration of War 6. Ordo at Chao 7. Chimera Havent listened to esoteric warfare yet. Cant rank that.

Imo Mayhem’s discography is extremely solid, and unlike so many other 2nd wave bands, Mayhem never tried to evolve their sound in a linear way. Instead they always opted for lateral shifts. Every album is entirely different in tone and content despite all having familiar components that feel like Mayhem. 1. De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas -> This one doesn’t need an introduction and although I think Mayhem made better music later in their career, there’s something undeniably fascinating and beautiful about this record. An album with guitars played by a man stabbed to death, bass played by the stabber in question, and that’s not even touching on Attila’s otherworldly necro vocal performance of lyrics partially written by a man who committed suicide years previously. It’s ungodly morbid and for that I love it. 2. Grand Declaration of War -> I don’t give a fuck what other people think, this album is fucking incredible and such an insanely bold move for the band. An avant-garde metal record about a future dystopian warlord waging war on Christianity and unmaking the universe. It’s fucking insane, and the music backs it up. The technical, even surgical guitar and drum work, combined with Maniac’s vocals (half of which are shrieked like a hell-spawned goblin and the other half which are delivered like a movie villain giving a rousing speech to the masses) is just so good. The 2016 reissue with slightly more subdued production and much needed new album art is just the cherry on top imo. 3. Esoteric Warfare -> For me this record is sort of like an alternate universe Grand Declaration of War. It’s incredibly cold and surgical, yet it evokes a very different feeling. The lyrics are conspiratorial in nature and the music builds such an ominous atmosphere throughout the runtime. I agree with you that the first few tracks of the record set the bar very high though. 4. Chimera -> Such a nasty record. These songs fucking rip too! I can’t fault anyone for having this as their number one. 5. Daemon -> You pretty much summed up my thoughts on this record. Tbh I haven’t spent enough time with it yet, hence it’s lower ranking, but I agree that it slaps. The band has no right to be putting out shit this hard so late in their career. 6. Ordo Ad Chao -> I like this record a lot, but the production makes it really hard to pull out individual songs. It’s very muddy - like if the color brown had a sound, it would be this record. This record for me is all about the atmosphere and what is, in my opinion, the single most fucked vocal performance I’ve ever heard on a record. Attila sounds like a legitimate demon and it’s his vocals that absolutely carry this thing. It’s fucking terrifying. All of that being said though, Illuminate Eliminate is one of my all time favorite black metal songs. If there’s one song that defines this record for me, it’s that. 7. Wolf’s Lair Abyss EP -> These songs would be great if I could hear them underneath those fucking drums. It’s so obnoxious - I’m very glad triggered drums this loud eventually died out. (It’s also worth noting that the last riff on this record is the same as the opening riff and Grand Declaration which is kinda cool) 8. Deathcrush EP -> I do not like this EP at all. I’d rather listen to literally anything else. Not sorry

i really didnt enjoy grand declaration and ordo ad chao but i think the grad declaration album cover goes hard i love the silver logo

Grand Declaration is rubbish in my opinion but I really like Ordo Ad Chao, it feels like one of the most cold and claustrophobic albums they did. Honestly it makes me feel like I am having to break out of a gulag in a snow covered forest, weird I know but that's how cold and grim it feels to me personally.

Ordo is by far their best album. Probably one of the most evil and cold sounding albums ever recorded.

For me, their best album is Grand Declaration. It's incredible. A misanthropic dictator leading a genocidal warfare against the universe via genetic destruction and Nordic supremacy. The music parallels the insane lyricism by being scathing, piercing and chaotic, but in a way which renders it with clarity and technical mastery, giving credence to the theme of 'reconstruction through deconstruction'. I listen to this album maybe once or twice a week, and very little makes me feel as hyped up and evil as this. The worst is of course Ordo Ad Chao. I would never think "I want to listen to Mayhem" and put that album on. It is borderline unlistenable.

Totally agree with ur description o gdow and also about maniacs lyrics are cringy xd. On regards Ordo, its the opposite to me, thats the peak of the band, its as far as they have gone musically and artistically...

I'm not a big fan of Mayhem but I love the De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas album

I mean , the atmosphere on de mysteriis is otherworldly ok, snorres thorns self titled album also is i mean just , just st otherworldly in terms of quality etc

Check out the movie Lords of Chaos about the band.

Mayhem is not to be casually listened to. They don’t cater to fans or trends. Think of them as abstract art where most black metal is like paintings of pastoral scenes.

@@Fireglo if grand declaration of war, chimaera and ordo ad chao are considered mediocre...I liken it to cannibal corpse with either Chris barnes or corpsegrinder. It’s almost like two different bands with or without euronymous. Different directions, artistically.

Grand Declaration of War is my favorite. Its the wrong album for the wrong band. It was ahead of its time and its a shame. The songs are super catchy and tight. I also love its cold production. Chimera is also a great album. Some brutal riffs and songs.

Grand Declaration is also my favorite. Arguably the first “progressive black metal” album. I especially love the drum sound, I mean it’s awful (everything sounds like plastic), but it’s wonderfully awful, I can’t get enough of it! 😂

I have a Mayhem CD that has the rough cuts from De Mysteriis with Dead on vocals. I have no idea how rare it is or if it's even legitimate. I just think it's cool.

Esoteric Warfare is my favorite Mayhem record. I’m so tired of generic, by the numbers black metal. The vocals are so insane, and the riffs are wild. Daemon is awful in my opinion. Their most boring album by a mile in my opinion

I fucking love Grand Declaration of War. Probably my favourite album, a lot more prog and experimental than usual, and the lyrics are fucking amazing. I will never not get hyped by the line "your life is dead, priest". Also the album cover with Jesus in the background is a lot better, otherwise they are almost identical so I usually just listen to that.

I would say stop bitching about clarity and just listen, and you'll find that you can hear more on Ordo Ad Chao than you can on for example Deathcrush. I understand if people don't like the production on Ordo or just don't like the album in itself.. but it is clear, you can hear the music there, but if you don't have good speakers then it might sound like crap. There are far worse BM albums (talking production) out there in my opinion. Also you seem to have missed the point of Ordo Ad Chao, as it is suppose to be chaotic and messy but if you listen to it you will hear the order in the chaos.

I just watched the movie "lord of chaos". Man, I wasnt sure if certain things on the movie were true so i informated myself, and got damn these guys were going so fucking wrong Man thats insane...I don't even like black metal, and i HATE those guys...

Kidding. I like the number 2 and 3 picks as well.

For me, Least favourite to favourite: Esoteric Warfare (sounds the same as Chao but worse, just pretty unmemorable for me) Daemon (sounds better than Esoteric but just doesn't grab me as much as some of the others) Chimera (good album but I like others more, this one gets a little same-y and I prefer Atilla on vocals over Maniac, Atilla is just a lot more unique, plus I feel this one is more of the louder, faster types of black metal albums which I do enjoy a lot but I prefer it when black metal is a little slower and more atmospheric) Grand Declaration of War (took me a few listens to come around to liking more but it's obviously their most unique album by far, some of the noises they use I don't think work the best in execution and the regular speaking parts do overstay their welcome just a little but overall it's one of their albums I listen to the most) Ordo Ad Chao (not amazing but it's got atmosphere, it's slower, it's creepy, Atilla is back on vocals and I think the thing I like about it the most is the fuking weird ass screachy noises they do in parts throughout the album, I always love it when vocalists just do not sound human and they're making fuked up noises, which is one reason I love Grindcore bands like Rompeprop, they just sound like alien monsters, not human, so any weird noises in vocals I tend to really appreciate) De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (classic, don't need to say anything, again it's not one of my favourite black metal albums ever but it's definitely Mayhems best, I agree with you about all those other BM bands being better) Deathcrush (is the best! I know I haven't included their other EP's, which I enjoy them all but Deathcrush is just too good not to include, I know this is one of the faster and more aggressive black metal types of sounds that I mentioned wasn't my favourite with Chimera, but Idk.. Deathcrush just sounds great, I love how unprofessional and messy it is)
