Sabalenka does it with the purpose of putting strength behind the ball, Sherif (and travisan, tormo and others) does it to simply distract and annoy the other players.

Ryba is the best. No grunt what so ever. Enjoy her game style. However, I for some reason like Sabalenka’s grunt. I find Sherif’s very obnoxious and intolerable. 🤷‍♂️

I think sadly thus year she may be too tired after the kind of tennis she's played this week to make a deep run in Paris. But, I def wouldn't want to play her high in confidence in the 1st or 2nd round ❤

This seems to be an Italian thing. I don’t know if it was Bronzetti but some of them start their grunt when the ball crosses the net.

@@nt4081 It’s always deliberate no matter who it is. Nobody naturally grunts/screams to that extent when they put effort into something. It’s either a personal decision to do it or a coach early on tells them to do it and it eventually becomes a habit. I think both the WTA and the ATP need to do something about it. Tennis is already quickly losing ground to pickleball and padel. This is only making it more unwatchable.

Very masculine energy. Mayar is such a pretty young lady, but needs to stop the Spanish and Italian style of tennis with the screaming. I believe she grew up in Spain and trained there before coming to the US for college. I think Sorribes Tormo, Errani, Trevian, Mugu are all from that school. Badosa too , but I have not watched her much lately to say its problematic

Mayar's grunting make us think her shots are much more powerful than they actually are ...

Among Sherif's many grunts "Wheeeeey" is my absolute favourite. And even that has nuance to it, with different pitches and inflections. It's like a commentary to her own game, asking questions of her opponent. I understand some people are irritated by it, but i find it highly entertaining.

She’s the worst but they’re all fake grunters. No one naturally does that. It’s a conscious decision by either the coach or the player themself.

Sterns played the entire match and won....without grunting. This grunting issue has been brought up for many years now and there needs to be a rule on evcessive grunting that is done to throw the other player off. Sherif is doing that on purpose as is Sabalenka and some others.

I dont usually mind grunting, but when it has 2 or more syllables...the 2nd one should be a violation cuz it's happening after they hit the ball instead of simultaneously

Not all of them do so with quite as much intention of masking the sound of their shots and distracting opponents, however. When done briefly and occasionally it is thoroughly understandable.
