May no rash intruder disturb their soft hours from the oratorio Solomon, HWV 67
by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)
RIAS Kammerchor
Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin
Daniel Reuss, conductor
May no rash intruder disturb their soft hours;
To form fragrant pillows, arise, oh ye flow'rs!
Ye zephirs, soft-breathing, their slumbers prolong,
While nightingales lull them to sleep with their song.

    I love the way the music gently subsides at the end as if a parent tiptoeing away from a sleeping infant and quietly closing the door.

    This is really the best performance of the Nightingale chorus i have ever heard. Thank you for posting. You are a real Haendel 'connaisseur'. Haendel was a master in painting with the choir. In Israel in Egypt, where he paints all the ten plagues of Egypt you hear Haendel on his best.

    It is a true comfort to revisit your site after what has been one of the most taxing weeks I have ever had. The best thing I did today, well in the middle of the night actually, is going to your channel. Because what did I encounter? One of my beloved Handelian choruses, which I’ve known for decades, yet hear in a totally fresh way, and enhanced by you to a masterful degree of beauty. Your sense of perfection and eye for detail, the choices, the miniature world you create with the mix of form, text, artwork and music offered me the first and only space where I can truly breathe and feel the hurt yet find solace. I don’t care if this sounds pathetic but you bestowed a great gift on me by adding this piece at this exact time. Thank you, dear Jeffrey - Chris

    Jeffry, this is really one of Handel's greatest choruses, absolutely exquisite. But help me, I can't remember in which of "Solomon"'s three acts this chorus appears (Act 1-Completion of the Temple; Act 2- The Judgement of Solomon; or Act 3-The visitation of the Queen of Sheba). Just trying to put it in context. Yes, I could look it up on line or in one of my recordings of the work, but I'm too lazy! Anyway, thank you again. The wealth of Handel's font of melodic inspiration still amazes me, and I've been a Handel fan since 1986!

    To me this is one of Handel’s most melodic choruses, absolutely adore it , but, trying to find out who wrote the libretto, Google says author unknown, does anybody know please?

  • @JeffreyStivers

    I’m glad you enjoyed this. There are no known references from the time that identify the libretto’s author, but an article published in the Cambridge University Press by musicologist Andrew Pink attitudes it to English poet/playwright Moses Mendes (d.1758).
