Grandfather Mountain is near Linville about 55 mi. NE of Mt. Mitchell (about 1.5 hrs). You can read about GM State Park by Googling North Carolina State Parks. Note: the state park and swinging bridge attraction are separate. The park is the backcountry of the Mountain. We have hiking trails and backpack camping. You can find our park map on the website. I plan on going to Grandfather Mountain for the first time but I'm not that great of a driver and afraid of heights. If I veer off can we ACTUALLY die from the height or will the trees and boulders block us?
