Aside from the battle of Fort Eban Emael other actions by Belgian forces in World War II are rarely discussed. This effort by the Belgians is certainly worthy to be noted and the soldiers who fought there remembered. This was very well done. It showed great respect for the men who resisted and in many cases, died defending their country.

Yes, Belgian politicians didn't want to antagonise the Germans in the 30s by properly supplying the Army with armour. Little Belgium antagonise the Germans? My late paternal grandfather was in the Régiment des Carabiniers "Prince Baudoin" in 1940 as a Corporal. We only found this out after my father was sent some paperwork after his father's death. We're in Australia.

I am so respectful of your excellent pronunciation in different languages. Most, if not all, other documentary makers butcher any language other then their own. It’s a disgrace, but you’re a bright shining light.

I was going to say the same thing Ray - The Ace treats everything with the utmost respect, unlike so many so-called historians, who lazily sputter out whatever they think a name or place is pronounced. A terrible way to teach history. Ace Destroyer may sound like a rough-and-tumble nomme-de guerre, but he's a refined and educated gentleman.I have learned so much from this channel.

He is clearly not British, or learned a few languages in his life. For example, French. He also pronounces withdrawal correctly, something British people can't (they pronounce it as withdrawral)

Outstanding!! I thank you for this. Another action I'd never heard of. I had no idea the Belgiums could fight like Lions. Very well, if I may use the term, played out. Another example of home field advantage. It's exceedingly difficult beating an enemy who knows the terrain like the back of his hand and is also fighting for mother country. Just like Victor Charlie in South Vietnam or the Boars in the Transvaal. I just got a whole new respect for the Belgium army of the 1940s!

Thank you for this excellent presentation !!!. A friend of mine at the university was the grandson of an "officier chez les chasseurs Ardennais". He fought in the Ardennes, not in Bodange, but also in Vyncke. When they surrendered in Vyncke, they were very afraid of being shot, in particular because during the fights they had deliberately targeted and shot several German officers. The grandfather also told me about what he learned about this battle of Bodange. Its description is very close, although less complete, to this excellent presentation. Just an additional funny little story. According to him when the Germans captured the chasseurs ardennais in Bodange, they would have interrogated their prisonners very aggressively, yelling many times "Wo sind die andern?". When the Ardennais answered with a smile we are all there, the Germans did not believe them and searched everywhere for the rest of the fighters)))))). They found nothing and yelled Wo sind die Andern? Wo sind die Andern? and the Ardennais did not dare to laugh but smiled between themselves. Besides the funny side of this story, it shows how much the chasseurs ardennais fought with courage and a formidable efficiency the Germans. Besides Following the Grandfather, they did not have good weapons, especially the machine guns. If they had Equipment as good as the Germans had, they would still make more damages to the German army. Thanks again for making know one of the best unit of the Belgian army.

Amazing how they held a village that tiny for so long! I visited Bodange earlier this year. Theres a lil monument at Traquebois that i think should be far bigger now i've heard this!

With no disrespect, the British praised "Plucky little Belgium" for standing its ground against the Germans in both world wars.

No they didn't. This was a WW1 sentiment and statement. In WW2 Belgium did its best to shaft the BEF. It was only because Gort anticipated that the cheating selfish Belgiums would lie about standing their ground that he shortened his lines to secure the line of retreat that the BEF was able to get back to Dunkirk. Belgians behavior was an absolute utter disgrace - inept and incompetent fighting followed by lies. They lied to Gort and then surrendered without informed British or French Command. Read your history.

The whole operation with the BEF failed bc of lack in communication, language barriers and mistrust on the highest levels in and between English, French and Belgian comnand. But your sheer disrespect towards these soldiers and even to a whole nation, tells me more about your own narrow mindedness and I don't think we should take any moral lesson of your reaction.

Battles on a large scale lose their personal nature. There are to many people and you can't know their names. On a small scale - you can know their names and they stand out as individual human beings meeting their fate. .

There isn't much to talk about the battles in the Netherlands... The dutch didn't really fight hard, just after a few hours they already surrendered, they hadn't such an prepared army as Belgium

The dutch defeated the german paratroopers, but both the belgium and dutch armies had few modern weapons. No tanks, nor anti tank. Yet both countries had battles worth remembering.

@@123Dunebuggy - The Belgians DID have tanks. Not many perhaps, but they were reasonably capable and as good as the bulk of the tanks in the Panzer Divisions (not as good as the Pz III, but certainly a match for the Pz II).

Regarding the action 'The Niwi Airborne Landings' involved the 10th and 11th companies of the Grossdeutschland Infantry Regiment, and they were brought to their landing zones at Nives (to the south) and Witry (to the north) by 100 Fieseler Storks. These planes were commandeered by the developer of this scheme Herman Göring, who was unable to use the Ju 52s which were all being used to the north at the Netherlands and at Eben Emael for Army Group B. The Fieseler Storks could only carry 2 soldiers at a time plus pilot, so they had to shuttle these flights. In fact many of the Storks lost their way in the darkness so the number of German troops actually involved in this behind the lines fighting with the Belgians were not full strength units. Many of the Storks landed at the wrong rendezvous. This information comes from the official military history of Case Yellow, 'The Blitzkrieg Legend' written by Karl-Heinz Frieser (pub. 1996). It was a unique airborne landing to be sure!

@@TheAceDestroyer Your welcome The Ace Destroyer. It just so happens I'm reading 'The Blitzkrieg Legend' now and had read the section about the battle of Bodange. The Belgian Ardennes Light Infantry held the promontory where Bodange sits. They held up units of the 1st Panzer Division for many hours. Ironically because of the Niwi airborne raids the Belgian commander at Bodange never received his orders to withdraw because the telephone lines had been cut. So the Ardennes Light Infantry troops stayed put and maintained a stalwart defense, causing many casualties among the 1st Panzer Division. A chapter which occurs after the river crossing at Sedan involves a tremendous fight south of Sedan at the village of Stonne, France. There the Grossdeutschland Infantry Regiment with elements of the 10th Panzer Division fought the French 3rd Armored Division and the French 3rd Motorised Infantry. This hamlet exchanged hands 17 times(!) over the course of 2 days. At present there is displayed a completely intact Char B tank in the center of Stonne, surrounded by farmhouses. You can see the tank from all sides on Google Earth. It is a forgotten story of French bravery from that time which shows that the French had fighting spirit.

De G, yeah, I live at the opposite side of Belgium, so it's a 2h30 hour drive for me. It will be for a weekend trip some day.

Interesting to know if Schützen Regiment 1 used their SdKfz 251’s in combat or left them behind and attacked on foot. They were one of the very few units in the German army to have ‘Hanomags’ in France.

Will there be another part of the narva campaign?

Pretty Good, however, why no photo of a T-13 Tank Destroyer ??? I have studied war 50+ years, but had no idea what a T-13 is ... Google says: The T-13 was a tank destroyer in use with the Belgian armed forces before World War II and during the Battle of Belgium. It was designed by Vickers, and produced by Vickers, Miesse and Familleheureux, and outfitted with a 1934 47mm, which, at that time, would have been able to pen anything the Germans had.

The Panzers were still further back. It was mainly the advance guard of the division. The Ardennes was still difficult terrain for tanks. In fact, a lot of the Panzers divisions had initial traffic jams during the first moments of the offensive as so many vehicles had to pass through the designated roads. Having the infantry go first to secure important areas was key to keep the divisions going.

A good fight by the Belgians but it actually played into Fall Gelb. The more allied forces that got sucked into Belgium to fight Army Group B the better for Army group A in the Ardennes. So the longer they held out, the bigger the final bag.

Iam surprised that in WW2 belgium units had Wallonian and Flamish and even German (Weiss) names in one unit, when i was a boy i met several units during the autumn Manouvres and all were pure Wallones or Flamish units you could distiguish them by their Languge , they spoke either Flamish or French (Wallones). I hope for more Vids about the early war or one about the fightings during the Kongo crisis in early 60, as a half north african (Algerian /Tunsian) iam interested in Colonialwars wars of independence

Don't be fooled by the names, they do not indicate whether a person is a Flemish, French or German-speaking Belgian. The Chasseurs Ardennais was a Walloon French-speaking unit.

If you have the opportunity, visit some of the Brialmont forts of Liège that fought in WWI. Look at the names on the memorials. Same thing. Lots of Flemish and Walloons fighting together under one flag.

Great video! And what a typical Belgian situation at 06:30: Orders to hold the line but hey guys, I brought you a great local ham too, bon appetite👍😂. Actually I'm not surprised about the German respectful attitude either. These were regular troops, not an SS division. And the situation at the Western front in the beginning of the war is not to be compared with the upcoming massacre at the Eastern front where the Germans were, in their eyes, fighting inferior Slaves and the danger of Communism. Btw, something which has always been the master plan of Western politics (incl. the USA) and their "appeasement policy" but that's a completely different story;-)

English and Russian too. He is Flemish, so he is fluent in French and English. Some native German speakers say his German pronunciation is somewhat off, but I only understand English and French pronunciation. Americans (like me) tend to struggle with English pronunciation, grammar and style.

(!). Fun Friends & Neighbours..., them there (Saur)Kraut(Eater)s ; indeed ! Did you catch, "The Perfect Burn..." ? 140,000 Hp (105,000 Kilowatts) of Raw Heat Output, at the peak - for 5 or 10 minutes. And you get to see me using a 1938-vintage Airport Firefighter (130 Litre Water Cannon + 10 Litres in it's Hose) to contain the surrounding Grassfires - ignited by Radiant Heat at the peak. In 25 years of my ownership, it's the first time the old Wormald Brothers Pty Ltd Simplex unit has ever actually fought & extinguished a Fire (!). My nearest neighbours, 1.2 Km away, were watching the Flame, above the Trees. It was pretty exciting...(!). Such is Life. Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

A very sad story, but I was impressed that the Germans paid their respects to a foe who was fierce and loyal and also the men who died actually gained the respect of the Germans. It's not something that would happen today.especially when going up against Islamic extremists!!

Oh get lost you awful Russsian troll. Just you know thousands of Muslims from current day Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan died face down in the snow before the gates of Moscow and st Petersburg. They were some of the most dedicated and effective fighters of the Red Army So many of you Russians are truly loathsome

@@Peipzz No, it merely shows that Allied soldiers had to be fortunate, in the early days of May 1940, not to fall into the hands of the wrong Germans. SS units were still green troops when the war started and when a rumour was started that their commanding general, had been killed. 97 British POWs massacred at Le Paradis, 27 May 1940. 80 British POWs massacred at Wormhoudt, 28 May 1940. In the end, the SS General turned out not to have been killed so that was some consolence to the stressed out SS troops.

Nice to see war, without looting, raping and killing of prisoners.

When the Belgians fought back ... for almost a day. Hey they did better than the Danish who fought for ... 4 hours. Edit: does it count as heroism when you don't pull back because your enemies cut the telephone lines on which the withdrawal order should have arrived?

This battle was nothing more than a piss in the wind. Belgium only had itself to blame. She tried to stay out of war, tried to be neutral, and did not allow the allies to enter Belgium soil in advance. Had they allowed this, the allies would have been better prepared. Instead the allies only entered Belgium after Germany attacked. By the time the allies (mostly the British) started entering Belgium it was already too late, which resulted in the British being eventually cut off and lead to Dunkirk.

First off, by your definition, all wars are just a lot of piss in the wind. Humbles fightings for a village, a road, a bridge were 90-95% of WW2 and prior conflicts. Gigantic operations of simultaneous battles on a large frontline being counted only on fingers of both hands. A case of a small unit being ridiculously outnumbered and holding the legendary Ghost division for almost a day in their infamously efficient blitzkrieg is - by far - worth mentioning. Secondly, "Belgium only had itself to blame" ... Seriously ? Are you that stupid ? Do you even understand the concept of neutrality ? Before it was clear Germany would be the one violating the border, the Belgians were planning for both a potential intrusion from Germany OR France. Germany had recognized Belgium neutrality and had no casus belli whatsoever to justify her invasion. Denying your country being used as an extension of the defense line of someone who is not you ally against someone who is not your ennemy in a war that do not concern you is f***** common-sense.. Peoples who do not want war do not have to be blamed because some maniac broke all international conventions by breaking treaties and invading a neutral country without war declaration. Has Hitler invaded Switzerland, would you also blame the swiss ? Let's not forget that nobody at that time knew what we know today about the true intentions of Hitler for Europes. They were anticipating yet another grim war, not a world domination campaign fuelled by madness.

The reason for the 'Belgian defense' generally being a disaster was the fact that the commanding officers where all speaking french and most of the Flemish soldiers - not understanding les 'monsieurs d'élite'. The "Ardennais' where the most fearful but sadly bad organised - as the whole of the army. My father fought at the 'Albert canal' and their commanding officers betrayed them so they where taken prisoners. My father had 5 bullets for an old WW1 riffle ! It just took 14 days for the Germans to take hold of Belgium and then former King Leopold III surrendered. My father used to tell us as children: "my fatherland ?? - My father had no land !" Besides, we Belgians where and are not 'fighters'. See history! Sad for all those who lost their life in a lost case and language problems as is still to this very day !!! A Belgian 'political sickness'.

@@phil36310 trouwens ikga je helpen , mijn nonkel(man is al jaren overleden heb hem maar vaag gekend was gelegerd aan het canal Albert, Carabiniers, en wat je lult over het eerste W O wapen heb ik ook me n twijfels, het Belgisch leger hadt in de eerste W O een Comblain geweer( enkele schot) tot 1915 ongeveer , toen is de Mauser gekomen, 5 schoten , vaste lader, met een schuiflatje, horizontaal binnen brengen, me n overgrootvader heeft 2 jaar aan de yzer gevochten tegen de pinhelmen, heb ze n dossier kunnen inkijken in Everen, dus je zou beter je groot bakkes houden onbenul, en volgens mij ben je een ollander , geen Belg , sukkeltje

This so only that Central europeans low war thinking. No rights to be independent country. First time when is used Blitzkrieg was Sovjets in Raattee Finland. Results was motti. Belgia got great lands cape to do there same but no Men and officers. Just eating chocolade in cafeteria.
