Maximum Apocalypse & Gothic Horrors Second Edition Review

Ойындар

Maximum Apocalypse, as a whole, is more than just a single game. It's a series of core boxes and expansions that are cross-compatible. Until recently, actually taking a dive into the universe could prove confusing for newcomers.

*Pros*
Second Edition is still Maximum Apocalypse and Maximum Apocalypse is still a stellar game
The Second Edition includes nice consolidation, refinements, and streamlining that improves the game
The Miniatures found in the Second Edition are quite nice
Both boxes include a variety of characters with very different playstyles
Highly replayable and modular
Natural Barriers to Alpha Gaming
Theme and gameplay meld together nicely
Easy setup and very little clunky overhead
A great mix of card play, resource management, and action economy
Lots of ways to work together
*Cons*
The Second Edition holds almost no value if you already own the first editions
Some components and wording weren't updated to match existing rules and components in Wasted Wilds
There are a few frustrating errors
Not many ways to raise the difficulty with just the base boxes

Which one of the 2nd Editions would you pick if it was only 1? Wasted Wilds, original or Gothic horrors? Straight forward is more of my thing. Is wasted wilds more meaty? Also the heroes in WW are meh? Cheers!

I'd go with Wasted Wilds. The Heroes in it are great, the driver is actually one of my favorites. But Wasted Wilds is also the baseline for 2nd edition, it has the new tribe mechanic, exposure, events etc.

Also do u think i should buy everything in 2nd edition(i got wasted wilds) or i can get the firs edition for gothic horror and the base since they are pretty much the same and they cost way less?

There are a few things that are cleaner in 2nd edition. But beyond that, the biggest differences is the minis that come with 2nd edition. If you aren't super interested in those you would probably be fine with the first editions if they are cheaper.

Love your content about maximum apocalypse. One question: is this game hard to beat? Because i like my co op game to be very hard

The difficulty is very dependant on how each mission is set up, but there are ways to raise it. It can be a pretty tough game at times

Hi, what would you suggest? Legendary Edition + Wasted Wilds or 2E Base + 2E Gothic Horrors?

@ActionHeinz If those are the only choices, I'd go with 2e base+2e Gothic Horrors and pick up Wasted Wilds at a later date. Alternatively. You could just get Wasted Wilds first, see if you like the game and then get 2e later. I wouldn't get the legendary edition or older version of Maximum Apocalypse while 2e exists. For a new player, it is a much cleaner implementation.

@@GideonsGaming Thanks for the answer, I was also leaning towards this option. Still a bit unsatisfying that there are inconsistencies in the 2e but it's manageble.

How do you recommend increasing difficulty in 2nd editions ?

Some of the old methods can help. Rolling the hunger dice at the start of a mission to determine your character's hunger. Allowing more than 3 monster tokens to spawn on a tile, or when a fourth token would be placed in a tile, place one in one (or more) adjacent tiles. Additionally, If you have more than one of any of the three boxes, Maximum Apocalypse, Gothic Horrors, or Wasted Wilds, you could take the ambush and empty-handed cards from those scavenge decks and add them to the one you're using. You can also add more tiles to a mission than it requires, the more tiles, the harder it is. When laying out the map, you could make it more complex. Complex layouts are harder than simple square and rectangle boxes. If you have Wasted Wilds, you can add the exposure cards to the older missions that don't use them. Any combination of those methods are ways I've found to adjust the difficulty, and you can use as many or as few methods as you want.
