Max Weber, a contemporary of Karl Marx, can be somewhat difficult to define theoretically. Here, we discuss "Ideal Types," a powerful construct which can be used to identify reality in relationship to pefection.

In additional to the comparative aspect of ideal-types, which you present very well, Weber's concept is also epistemological. He argued that our concepts about the world never truly represent the world in its totality. Rather, because they are made in our head (from ideas), there is always a disjuncture between empirical observation and "truth." The ideal type acknowledges this problem.

Yes! It is quite epistemological :) Further, I think it does do a very nice job of highlighting the problematic nature of knowledge building and consensus--and the beauty of "how we know what we know." This type of work by our early social theorists shows how closely related sociology is to philosophy and (if we take the time to reflect) the issues that surround all aspects of concept building in the sciences. As we move toward a post-modern world, I think it is becoming increasingly more challenging to identify, define and agree on ideals (and also about what reality "really" is). Using science to do so helps, but even using the basic rules of science can sometimes be framed as a slippery slope in the contemporary world. Thank you for your comment--you have reminded me what drew me to sociology.

Hi Chris, Some of these videos are VERY old and my editing was rudimentary. I have plans to update some of the old ones, but always seem to run out of time :) Just remember, econ though the sound quality is not the greatest, the information is good!

Weber agrees with too much government. The problem with this style of management experience is there's a limited room for growth and opportunities. We will have to spend more time for development, and still not get the job if the authority doesn't like that your management system for how you approach life is different with an alternative. And, the authority bureaucrat doesn't care for different reasons or approach to living in a country of free will. This makes no sense to a true American. America government needs to talk about how the rules, regulations policies are compatible for Americans under the United STATES. Constitution laws. Weber's ideas might work well in Latin America countries but not America STATES, UN. Tyesha N. Isom
