Max Cooper:
I have been exploring the difficulties of communicating with words as part of my new Unspoken Words album project. I was thinking about how to visualise the idea, and started chatting to artist and machine learning specialist Xander Steenbrugge about a system for converting words to visual stories. The idea was to take the writings of Ludwig Wittgenstein, who tackled this question of the difficulties of using words to explain our selves and our place in the world, and to have the AI system re-interpret these writings in visual form, making a direct visual representation of the Unspoken Words album concept.
It's interesting for me to see the incomprehensible philosophical language interpreted visually like this, full of symbolism and the boundaries between language, our selves, and the world, broken down into flowing abstraction. I haven't really taken it all in yet, I feel like there's more to discover in it than I can appreciate. The system has a lot more potential too, we will be running a version where you can have your own words turned into visuals and music as well, keep an eye out on my socials and mailers for that if you'd like to get involved.
The music was a similar departure from my usual interpretation of ideas, where I applied a half time drum and bass format with more aggression and sharpness of sound design. It’s a club track, but for me, an exotic form of club track. The name came from Wittgenstein’s private language argument, and the difficulty of communicating an entirely internal, subjective object to others when we can never directly show the object to each other. He uses the analogy of a beetle in a box, and I refer to the idea instead as our exotic contents.
Xander Steenbrugge:
From the very start of this collaboration, Max and myself were very eager to leverage
the latest advances in AI to directly visualize language through the mind of the machine.
For the past few months, in fact, I've been exploring this approach using a combination
of two machine learning models: a generative system called VQGAN, which can generate pixels
starting from a blank canvas, and a perceptual system called CLIP that guides this generator
by scoring how well the generated imagery matches a given language prompt. Through this
feedback loop, the system can be used to directly convert language into the visual domain.
After an early phase of experimentation with this technique, we quickly settled on Wittgenstein's
Tractatus as a great narrative for this technique as it deals directly with the relationship between
language and reality and aims to define the limits of science.
This final video then, is a direct visualisation of many of the statements posed by Wittgenstein in
his seminal work, as interpreted by the AI.
Here you can find some examples of the timestamps and corresponding language prompts used to create the visual narrative:
0:00 "The world is everything that is the case"
0:16 "Any one can either be the case or not be the case, and everything else remain the same"
0:29 "I am my world"
0:41 "According to Wittgenstein: The limits of my language mean the limits of my world"
0:52 Tractatus quotes
1:00 "The picture is a model of reality"
1:26 "Objects form the substance of the world."
1:42 Tractatus quotes
1:56 "The picture is a model of reality"
2:10 "A name is a primitive sign"
2:23 "What can be shown cannot be said"
2:38 "There is indeed the inexpressible. This shows itself; it is the mystical"
3:19 Tractatus quotes
5:15 "Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent"
5:20 "The world is everything, I am my world"

This is exactly what I was thinking while watching the video. As if this visualization is a good approximation of what concepts in our mind actually are, how the models our brain makes of the world around us "look like". Or, as you said, that we are looking at thoughts themselves. Almost as if we were to look directly at the behind the scenes of our mind and [sub]consciousness.

It reminds me of my dreams. As a result of having fibromyalgia, I get very little deep sleep (dreamless sleep) so I dream more than I should and as I also wake quite frequently, I remember most of them. Like these StableDiffusion dreams, most of our dreams lack temporal awareness. As in these creations, there is a degree of continuity but nothing like in reality. So, while dreaming, we are aware and our visual cortex is working, creating a photo-realistic simulation, but those parts of our brain that usually process information in a way that gives us intelligence are not functioning as they do when we're awake. Neither do we have access to much of our memory, long or short term, and so we're left with very little temporal awareness. I find it interesting (and very informative) that we can be fully aware of our existence, having a regular conscious experience, while at the same time being dumb as a box of rocks, which we usually are when we're dreaming.

Yeah, it is impressive. My guess is that this was probably done with some new variation of hallucinatory convolutional neural networks. EDIT: Oh, I just realized he explained it in the description. It is a feedback loop between two AI techniques, one that generates images from text and another one that guides the generation by scoring the images, probably frame by frame. I'm shocked by these new forms of art which would be impossible to create for a human on its own.

Aldous Huxley has a great thought on the psychedelic experience, he says that our mind usually has a biig filter that filters out a lot of `raw` stimuli and that's essentially how we make sense of the world, but in the psychedelic experience that filter, becomes smaller and smaller til in some cases we begin to experience our `raw` vision, touch, thoughts, etc I think a parallel could be drawn with how ai does process vision/thoughts because is `unfiltered` by the human mind The book where Huxley talks about this is called `The doors of percetion`

This video has defined a new era visually, the use of AI and what it creates in here goes beyond what a man can do by itself, the AI was feed with a library with a ton of images serving as a color palette ( if I’m not mistaken) so in a way it’s the indirect work of thousands or maybe millions of people that took pictures that later became some a piece of a puzzle inside a machines dream.

Many years ago, I never guessed I’d see the day that we could technologically synthesise an epic shroom trip. It’s like we’re looking inside the self organising cellular genesis of the creation of our soon to be AI god. Like abstract memories preceding some form of future events. It’s so utterly mind blowing what’s about to happen when you think hard enough about extrapolation of current technological progression.

The imagery is so disorientating and yet familiar, like a dream that your lucid mind tries to interpret in real-time but it just keeps shifting every time you almost get a grasp on it. Maybe dreams are just our brain's interpretation and visualization of the quantum uncertainty principle, a desperate attempt to recognize patterns in the sub-atomic chaos that envelopes us and somehow generates a field of consciousness that we experience as sentience. Language is codifying the randomness, harnessing and quantifying it, labeling it and separating it into categories so we can try to understand it and at least have some sign posts to guide us through existence. Watching this piece is what I imagine being a newborn is like, inundated with confusing sensory data that our undeveloped minds cannot yet decipher. But there is just enough awareness, a vestigial preset built into our DNA via millions of years of evolution, to allow us to slowly make sense of the world around us.

Unbelievable...this, what you doing is art. Every Single track, are visual masterpieces. To watch how wide your Imagination is. the way you choose so many diffrent Tools, to express. Thats wonderfull. Keep on going. All your teammates are involved and did a great job. cutter, camera, Sound, Set up, script, Sketches, every Single hour is compressed on maybe 5 minutes. So you have to be tough to catch us. Perfect, every time perfect

This is probably as close as to an LSD experience you can get without taking any. It's truly uncanny. When you're tripping. Everything is Everything and is connected.

It has this dystopian feel of “ the future sound of London “ to it, great conversions between the realism and the abstraction of that!

The distance between the past, present, & future is now. Excellent site vector cartography of the liminal space beyond the event horizon by Monsieur Xander. Diego Riverra, Osha Neumann, Salvador Dali ... Pink Floyd representative style ... I couldn't find the Yellow Submarine, but I looked. Dammit! Where's Ringo? Castanedian psychedelics. I didn't know if I should expect Mario Savio, Dan Rather, Edward Said, or maybe someone like Joseph Campbell to show up and begin seminar. I just thought I should mention that I have viewed this sober, if for coffee.
