During his Golden Jubilee visit to Portugal, The Aga Khan met with President Cavaco Silva, Prime Minister José Sócrates, Foreign Minister Luís Amado, and Minister of Justice Alberto Costa, among other government officials. The Aga Khan also undertook consultations with the United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, Jorge Sampaio who, as the then President of the Portuguese Republic, had opened the Ismaili Centre in Lisbon ten years earlier. On Imamat Day, 11th July 2008, following an evening meeting with Prime Minister José Sócrates at the Prime Minister’s official residence, The Aga Khan and the Foreign Minister Luís Amado signed an Agreement of International Cooperation between the Ismaili Imamat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Republic. The Prime Minister also hosted a dinner in honour of The Aga Khan, which was attended by Prince Amyn, Prince Rahim, Prince Hussain, Princess Khaliya, and senior Jamati leaders. At the Ismaili Centre, The Aga Khan and His Eminence D. Jose Policarpo, the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon, jointly presided over the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Catholic University of Portugal and the Aga Khan University. Other senior government officials, including the Minister for Culture, José António de Melo Pinto Ribeiro, were also present for the occasion. This historic agreement seeks to foster international understanding and scholarly cooperation between diverse cultures and faiths. Areas of collaboration between the two universities will include culture, law, religion, ethics, health sciences, education and human development.
