I'm dealing with a particular problem -- shooting stills of water in low light and very close, which autofocus has a lot of trouble with. I wasn't aware of the peaking setting, so this is very helpful, although I'll still have difficulty because my subject is moving constantly. I'll keep testing, and thanks -- your videos are great.

You can practice in good light and then kind of learn the settings. But of course AF works best in good lighting conditions. Hey Roger thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Manual mode with infinity seems to be hit or miss on some mavic 2’s. On mine for example it turned out the be “almost” the sharpest. But still better than relying on AF all the time. All depends on the situation. :)

What a fantastic tip regarding side by side in edit with screen recording. Every lens is not the same so this is fool proof on figuring out my own lens. Thank you! +1 sub

Of course, with any large production electronic device, there is a chance for different focus, or even calibration. Testing a lens, is of course just as useful on a DSLR or Mirrorless camera as it is with a Mavic 2 Pro or other drone. Which drone are you flying? What phone or tablet do you use for it?

No problem man! The Smart Controller is nice, keeps the phone charged and not depleted after a few flights. It all has its pluses and minuses. What do you fly your Mavic 2 Pro for? (I assume your have a Mavic 2 Pro but could be wrong of course).

Dont have a 2 pro yet so no auto focus on my side. Have the Air and I am a little sceptic going to a drone with the focus ability. Great video! :-)

A bit late with this comment, but I stumbled upon this video now so... for what it's worth: TL;DR: infinity focus symbol = hyperfocal distance, which is NOT "infinity focus". What you call "infinity focus" and interpret as "make the things farthest in the background become as sharp as possible", doesn't actually work like that. What that infinity focus actually sets is 'hyperfocal distance" (ideally for the selected aperture, but I haven't tested to confirm). Hyperfocal distance setting seeks to give you the deepest focus possible with a certain lens and aperture. Loosely, this means that actual focus will be around 1/3 distance into the scene, with things all the way to "pretty close to the drone" (2-3m) to infinity will be 'reasonably focused'. It will be a gradient of focus though, with the sweetspot 1/3 into the scene. The benefit of this mode is that you can 'set it and forget it' and fly with the drone as a fixed focus lens (like Mavic Air). Most people will find that everything is 'properly focused'. By explicitly focusing on a mountain range, you will likely get the background of your scene perfectly focused, but you might find that anything inside of... I don't know... 50-100m will start showing lack of focus (again: a gradient). If I plan a swooping shot that brings the drone "close-ish" to something-I'll use hyperfocal distance setting to not risk anything. If I know that nothing will come closer than 30-40m or so, I might do the AF to MF trick you mention. Under no circumstances do I use AF (also like you mention). A bit of rambling. Hopefully this helps someone. If not you, then one of your viewers.

Hi. I've been using 5 shot AEB in order to get the best dynamic range from my photos. Even after I merge/stack then in photoshop (using luminosity masks or Lightroom if I'm lazy as a HDR) i can still get blown out highlights specifically the sun as a lot of my images are sunrise/sunset. My question is can you exposure compensate with the Mavic 2 Pro? This way my base or "correct exposed" image will begin from being 1 stop darker (or brighter if i so choose). Thanks.

Hey there. Great question. I would have to double check. Don’t have the drone near me at the moment. I would make sure you tap on the brightest part of your image for the initial exposure and then shoot AEB with that. This should ensure your highlights aren’t blown out. Hope that helps.

I recently lost my Mavic 2 Zoom due to a stupid pilot error. I had hundreds of flights with that and I always used Manual Focus (MF) and set it to Infinity Focus at the beginning of each flight and never changed it. I also had Focus Peaking on and that always seem to work great for me. I just replaced the lost Zoom with the M2 Pro (thanks honey), and the first few flights have seemed to work the same when I used the same settings that I had with my Zoom. I love the focus peaking that gives you confirmation of what is in focus.

@@Quadcopterguide To set focus to infinity, I touch the focus bar to make the focus bar active, then I touch the infinity symbol up at the top of the focus bar. Infinity has always worked for me for close or far subjects, but with a drone, "close" is not really very close to the drone.

I hear ya, I tend to overdo stuff sometimes, so I wanted the absolute sharpest setting and I found it to be the one in the video. But tapping on infinity should be very close for most people.

This is what you have to do...while flying, to get a good focus? Guess I will stay with my Mavic Mini. I think the focus and sharpness of the video, and I mean from top to bottom, and left to right of the entire view, seems very good . Post processing can even improve it also somewhat. And there is not one 'focus control' setting on it. Does it use Contrast-Detection Autofocus, like on some smartphones? Good detailed explanation of the Mavic 2 Pro though. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Steven, thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment! Awesome! This example is just for getting the best possible focus out of a Mavic 2 Pro possible. You can of course just have AF on and get very good results. The Mavic 2 Pro uses Phase and Contrast Detection for Autofocus. Great stuff!

Okay, I'm a new drone user and have recently bought a DJI Mavic 2 Pro but have not had a lot of opportunity to play with it yet. But I'm curious how you might handle such a shot (clip) regarding focus ... You begin the clip, say about 3 feet from a "cactus", with desired sharp focus on the cactus. You then slowly pull back, up, and away from the cactus to reveal the distant desert mountains in the background and want these to gradually come into focus at more or less the same rate you pull away from the cactus. Is this realistically possible without a lot of visual "focus hunting" with the Mavic 2 Pro? As a secondary query on the same subject .. Where does the Mavic 2 Pro interrogate the sensor in the various AF modes? I know with higher end DSLR type cameras you can typically set the focus region where it will prioritize. I assume it prioritizes the center ~20%??? Also, I should state I'm coming from a strong "stills" background and video is new to me but video is something I want to possibly expand my repertoire into Thanks

Hi Robert, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. I saw your comment last night, but wanted to respond on the computer today. That is a very interesting question of pulling focus in your example type shot. Your question made my brain start working, may have to try this someday soon :). ok so my current plan of attack for your selected shot: 1) manual mode with focus set on cactus. 2) fly up just above cactus to have clear shot of horizon. Manually set MF to get background sharp. 3) remember that spot on my virtual focus wheel. 4) fly a couple shots with me manually, and as smoothly as possible moving the virtual focus wheel to give that "manual pulled focus look". Of course this is going to be quite challanging with only two hands :D. But challange accepted i say. You could also get way more nerdy and setup a waypoint mission and then have time to pardon-the-pun, focus on focusing. The reason i think this is the best way is that in AF mode i just know that camera is going to go past perfect focus and back again at minimum, giving the obvious focus hunt in the video. I just tried this indoors real quick, the focus on the monitor at least looked a little "notchy", but give it a try! Probably still better than AF. as for your second question, you can set the AF green square focus point anywhere on the screen, and then holding the photo shutter half way will grab focus exactly where u set the AF focus point. Give video a try! I found it gives you another dimension to get creative with. There's also something very satisfying about getting that perfect smooth fluid video shot. Hope that helps! I have a feeling that the third mark may be a tick too much for you too. Another fine video my friend. Interesting how soft f11 is. Pity they did not resolve that with the camera so the aperture is more akin to others. But you have arrived at a solid solution as always. Hey ARD! I was hoping you would give this one a watch :). As I was editing the cinematic sequence, after I wiped my stupid smile off my face... I thought finally a little bit of cinematic flying action for my loyal subscribers like yourself. Yea the aperture bit is a little odd, one of those things that will most likely only be improved upon as we climb the Mavic generations in the coming years. I suppose it has to do with many factors, which I can only speculate on. Thanks so much for the great feedback. You made my day sitting in that darn editing chair... all day.... worth it! It was fun to dabble into some color grading as well! An art into itself it seems. Practice makes perfect. 👌🏼

Quadcopterguide Feel your pain. Editing and post process can be a real pain. I think some of it is because we now have so many fine tune options it can ne difficult to believe you have nailed it. Then there is monitor calibration....colour space etc. Sometimes a 35mm 24 exp film seems so appealing lol. Seriously though....you know your craft very well and for me your videos are very worth while. I can easily see your attention to detail and the care you take and time you devote

You don't want to know how many Gigabytes worth of photos I have taken over the last 15 years, and I've only taken the time to post process maybe a handful. Up until now, the main reason I post-processed images was that the wife wanted to put up some new Canvases on the walls :). Another reason was that I was in the JPG only or RAW & JPG camp for so long. I totally understand and have personal experience with RAW-editing-phobia, a new term I just created haha jk. Just recently I've gotten a deeper desire to learn as much as I can about film & video. If one still-image is worth 1000 words, what is just one second of video footage which consists at minimum of 24 frames? It's giving me a chance to be creative, something I always thought was incredibly difficult for me. Another thing that makes it easier to edit, are tools which aren't too overwhelming. I think that's a big part of it. If you get someone that's a beginner or amateur and they have a few early successes in post-processing, whether that be Mavic 2 Pro images or videos or just ground-based images, I think that goes a long way. You know I do miss shooting on my old Yashica Mat124G from time to time. The amount of detail that camera captured, was just phenomenal. Thank you for your kind words, as a beginner KZreadr, or person trying out some filmmaking, it is, of course, the hope that the work is appreciated. I often get caught up in the fine details..but for me it's a must sometimes. Did you see that there is perfect continuity between the windmill blades? I selected frames which offered continuity as the blades are moving. Such a Nerd... :)

Quadcopterguide Now we are talking. Another was Bronica. No digital medium will ever match the plate....but the offset was the processing or lack of it. However....if you have used and mastered a film camera you had to master light. Light is the key...brightness....direction of. To be honest we had to post process a photo before taking it. Hence your blades....you were I imagine already using that skill when selecting. We could fill your comments section nerding together. This is why I champion you videos. So much is happening in them or has happened to them. All technology is great it allows people to capture their lives in an instant.....billions of videos and photos now exist straight out of the camera with very good results. But its knowing what to do when the limitations of the device reach a point where they get confused....this is where know the film allows you to adjust and take control

haha, had to google Bronica. Haven't looked into medium format cameras in years! The Bronica story is a great one. Guy sold premium cameras used, then made accessory and just any kind of goods to raise more money and then invested in making a camera that solved issues the current ones had in his eyes. Pretty cool. Made me setup an eBay alert for an old Yashica, maybe a broken one will hit someday. Would make a cool prop in the background on my shelf. :) Brings back memories. In High school many many years ago i still remember my first black and white photograph i took, with a shoebox pinhole camera. Good Times. That was the start of my photography learning. What do you mainly shoot with your DSLRs? I don't remember asking.

Can you take good photos without using nd filters. When I use the recommended aperture and shutter speeds my photos are overexposed. I have to increase the aperture to reduce exposure?

Hey Tony, awesome you took the time to watch and comment! Much appreciated! You can take photos without a filter if you don’t really want any motion blur etc. try to expose your photos to a negative EV value. This will underexpose it a bit and offset your overexposure you are seeing. I would recommend leaving the aperture at its sharpest setting and adjust the shutterspeed. Assuming there is enough light to not get any camera shake etc. hope that helps!

Hello, new to your channel, just subbed as well. I’ve had my Mavic 2 now for about a month and now I have some footage collected on my SD card. When viewing on my completer the video lags and is pixely at times. What software would you recommend I use to view this footage and to do some editing as well? Thank you.

Hey Tundra Whisperer. Thanks for stopping by! There are a few factors when it comes to playback of the Mavic 2 footage on a computer. First, make sure your footage is transferred to the PC, sometimes playing off the card can cause issues. Next, it depends a lot on your PC hardware. If you are playing back 4K H264 footage you need a relatively recent computer. H265 on the other hand is even a heavier load on your CPU and/or GPU. I'm on a Mac so I just use quicktime to quickly preview clips, and I edit in FCPX. You could try downloading an app called VLC (available for windows or Mac) and try playing a clip with that. What kind of a computer do you have? What do you store the files on before you try to play them back? Thanks for the sub!

Quadcopterguide Thank You for sharing this info and the tips. I will try and load one of the videos onto my computer and see if this improves the playback quality. I have a gateway computer, here are the specs. Running Windows 7 Home Edition, Processor - intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2300 CPU @2.80Ghz, installed memory 6.00 GB, 62 bit operating system, I’ll also try the lightening to use cable and see if I can load the videos from my computer directly into my iPad. You are very helpful, much appreciated.

Sounds like you may have tried to play a clip while it was still on the drone or while the card was in the card reader. Definitely get the video onto the computer for the test. Glad i could help! See ya in the next video!

Quadcopterguide hey there, figured out a really good and free fix to my lag and pixel viewing issues. Loaded “Pot Player” onto my windows based PC. Viewing my SD card is very nice now. And it has many more features than Windows Media Player. Thanks again.

I keep my C1 button set to "Center Auto Focus" and get the drone to an altitude where it will focus to as close to true infinity it can doing a center auto focus. Once done, I flip over go manual, keep my peaking on standard and tweak the drone's attempt to auto focus. I leave the contrast, sat and sharpness all on zero.

Nice explanation. If you focus on something that is 20 meters from the distance and you turn the drone and the distance to that object is 200 meters, do you refocus completely with AF and then set it to MF? That takes a lot of time and a lot of blurry scenes will be seen. Today I flew with the waypoint options and had him take 4 pictures, all were out of focus. Do you have a solution for that?

To be honest I've been using the Auto Focus for the past 4 months and never had an issue with my Videos being sharp ! I think the important thing to do is Set the F Stop to 4 as that seems to be the sharpest for most people using the Mavic 2 Pro! I'd also like to add that I got some polar Pro lens Filters and hated them! , I generally can't see any difference in my footage from say using 1/60 speed at 30 fps with ND on to say having ND off and using a random shutter speed.... makes no difference to my eyes. Best settings for me personally is 4k HQ Mode ISO 100 Always and Always F4 Stop - Shutter speed doesn't matter not to my eyes anyway. so what ever speed gives you the best middle exposure. I always shoot at 30 FPS ! 24 FPS looks choppy. For Photography again I always shoot at F4 and Use 3 AEB Mode to take 3 shots and then I combine them in Lightroom for the best image. A Few tips I'd like to share is always fly slow and smooth for the best footage and keep the record button on as long as possible and then just fly like a bird and pan and capture the views , I find this way you have a big choice of what to add in your final cut when you get home, works for me.

Hey Jason! Thanks for taking the time to watch and also for your comment. Really enjoy chatting with you guys. You are correct, for my Mavic 2 Pro F4 is also the sharpest aperture. As to why the shutter speed is so important, and why most cinematic footage is shot in 24fps (or 23.98) I go into some of those details in this ND filter video if you haven't seen it already: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mX15qNqkicK_YJM.html I'm working on a Mavic 2 Pro Best Settings for Cinematic Video, hope to publish that soon, should be interesting to you guys as well. HQ mode is a nice mode to shoot in, I still do like using FOV for those wider shots since HQ mode does crop in a bit more. Another thing about 24p is that motion does have a significant motion blur, movements have to be slow. The nice thing about shooting at 30fps you can slow down your footage to 24p and it becomes even smoother, as in slow-motion. You are absolutely correct about shooting more than you think. There's nothing worse than getting to editing and wishing you had just a second or two more on the end of that smooth fly through! Great stuff, man. What do you mainly shoot with your Mavic 2 Pro? Great overview Jason, thanks. Like you, I haven't noticed a difference in the video when observing or not observing the 180 degree rule for frame rate/shutter speed.

Hi Bill, thanks for dropping by the channel. The 180 degree shutter rule will be noticeable mostly when filming restively close objects or doing quick movements. The motion blur on trees, buildings etc.

Your 24fps looks choppy because of high shutter speed and not enough motion blur. Also your camera pans are probably too fast. 30 fps is somewhat less sensitive but still prone to the same problem , meaning allows some faster movements and / or shutter speed before choppiness becomes apparent. 60fps is even more forgiving in this regard.

I Focus on lurning every thing I can watch, read,or find about what I hope falls from the sky(Mavic pro,control , couple extra batteries )and hits me! I'm fine with slight injuries. The think the ones U love most hurts sometimes. All jokes aside it's hard understanding the class when you havnt gotten the book/Mavic Pro yet!Factoring in my A.D.D. I think I can only do better acting as a spung soaking up every thing I can in preparation for the day the SKY'S OPEN UP and that Goose drops my IT'S IT'S DJI 👶A BAND NEW MAVIC PRO FROM THE HEAVENS!! One day I hope to catch up with the rest of the class! My True Life Story! Good Work

Hey Justin, that's a good question. I think i will limit it to my little QuadcopterGuide sticker for the time being. I'm not a big fan of skins, as in my eyes they just add another layer of insulation to the drone, where in hot temperatures it doesn't really help in dissipating heat. Maybe a white skin could help that, but white on a drone up in the sky isn't helpful, haha. Neon Orange probably does help being able to spot it sometimes though huh? I guess you have to weigh the advantages over the dissatvantages and see if it's worth it. Some neon orange or SOLAS (safety of life at sea) tape in strips could cause it to be easier to see yet not add too much bulk or insulating properties. That's just my $0.02 though. I know there's a market in customizing drones with skins etc.

Ideally I don't anyone who would use f22 on any camera!!! Granted it will bring the exposure back down, but the image will fall apart!!

I have recently purchased a mavic 2 pro with smart controller. So I am still learning the video settings. I have found for me at least it is way to complicated. We spend allot of money on a drone and out of the box the video is terrible. Then you find out that you have to mess with all of these settings. Also you will need video editing software. Wow wish I had known that before I bought the drone. Seems that it would be a pain to have to keep setting the focus while flying the drone. Then most people do not use the Auto focus. This is very frustrating for me. I just wanted good 4K video out of the box. Do not get me wrong. I love the drone and what it is capable of. Just seems that for the money we spent on the drone. The video should be perfect out of the box.

Hey Drone it, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. It is much appreciated! I can understand where you are coming from. The Mavic 2 Pro however gives us many features and settings we can change over lower-end DJI drones which allow us to get even more cinematic footage. In terms of focus, setting it to the infinity setting as I show in the video is the easiest way to get everything you tend to film with an aerial platform to be in focus. Be sure to check out my most cinematic settings video in this playlist for the best H264 settings. Drone It sure! It just seemed like doing h265 with a new editing workflow may be a bit overwhelming currently to you for example. If you start out with h264 get a good base down with settings you like, do that for a while and then take the leap into h265 etc it’ll be a smoother transition. You can of course jump into h265 right now, if you think it’s doable for you currently.

Hey Atort, thanks for tuning in again! Yep, on my Mavic 2 Pro and many others the F/4 Range is the sharpest.. I don't know why the conventional f/8ish f-stop isn't the sharpest, must be the lens used. Give it a test on yours if you have one. Let me know what you found out. Nice ,but i'm not shure i understand every thing ...i'm speaking french . So no AFC , no AF . Only MF ? first pick a vue in AF , tap on the screen then go to MF and tap on infinity. Is This Correct ??

Hi Marc, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Much appreciated! Yes I have found for me that AFC doesn’t get me the best result. I either use AF them switch to MF if I got a sharp lock, or I set the focus manually if I only want infinity focus (far away items in focus). The perfect infinity focus setting is the one in the video. You can of course test your own mavic 2 Pro for the best and sharpest focus on your model. I assume it will be very close to the same setting though :). Hope that helps! What do you mainly film with your mavic 2 Pro?

Quadcopterguide nvm tap on infinity work. But don’t work well. I have to adjust manually to get the best focus

for the life of me I cant figure out why my cheaper mavic air was focused perfectly with none of this crazy stuff . Why is the mavic pro 2 so much harder to focus. Pay more for a more difficult to use drone makes no sense.

Hey Joe thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Much appreciated! The mavic air has a fixed focus lens. It’s set to focus on infinity and glued in place. With the Mavic 2 Pro you have the option to achieve focus on a foreground object and get the blurred background (bokeh). Without a variable focus this isn’t achievable through hardware. It does seem odd sometimes but when you think that $100,000 cinema cameras don’t even have Autofocus... just more adjustability is all. Hope that helps. If you manually set the focus to the setting mentioned you will have infinity focus as you do on your mavic air.

No one goes into the menu and actually shows how all these things are selected and adjusted.......like where do you even select manual or auto focus ?
