Maverick Conversation: A Conversation with Robert Fisk & Yung Chang | Doc Conference

Фильм және анимация

Robert Fisk has spent four decades writing about the Middle East, both as a reporter and in books like The Great War for Civilisation. He’s also the subject of the new film This Is Not a Movie, directed by Yung Chang (Up the Yangtze). The two will discuss the role of journalism as the first draft of history.

I only just found out he died which is crazy because Fisk was someone I was always curious about as to what he was writing.about. I was going to check what he thought about the Afghan disaster but then I read Robert Fisk was a journalist in the wiki bio that came top of the search result.

If I may say it this way, I have been a student of Robert Fisk. When the Great War was available I was living in Latin America and wanted it so much. But it cost U$S100, which was a lot for me. It took a month to decide, walking by the bookstore every day, finally I made the plunge and carried the book in Spanish translation for weeks with me, reading every moment I could. I still have that volume today (2024). When we lost Robert is was an uncommon loss and I did grieve, I still do. No one revealed the Middle East, the world, as he did. When I died I was one year younger than he, now I am older and if wiser, a lot has to do with him. Thanks goodness in October, his last book will be published and available, I am on the wait list and while still sad, I find myself elated over the fact I will soon have his book, this is April, 2024.

RIP Robert fisk, the world is a poorer place since your passing. I missed your erudite and personal writings on the Middle East. Your prediction that the conflict in the Middle East would only get worse, sadly came through.

Will this film be made available in any other medium in the future? I would absolutely love to watch it, but I do not live in Toronto.

I don’t feel that this doc does Robert Fisk justice or capture his wit, intelligence and charm.

What do you mean by recent? (The actual film was released this year at TIFF in Toronto) We shot it over the course of a few years, with a large part (Syria, Bosnia, Sarajevo, Palestine) shot in 2018. BTW, love the Bungle profile pic! 😄
