Looking at a beautiful rifle is like looking at a beautiful woman, we've all seen them before but we will all look again and enjoy the moment every time. I am taken by the classic Mauser sporting rifle and even though mine is home done on a wonderful FN Venezuelan 7x57 rifle I still take pride in the ownership.

Great vid as usual. Stunning rifles. The 416 is sublime. Being in the UK I am limited to whet I can own and shoot. I used to shoot fulbore and smallbore pistols until they decided we where not responsible enough to own them and that was that. Muzzle loaded pistols and pistol calibre carbines are allowed but my heart was just not in it any more. I shoot my air guns now and get a lot of enjoyment from them, even when I am just cleaning them. I agree with you about quality and I buy the best I can. I recently acquired a Daystate mk3 air rifle that was made in 2003 and is stunning. It has an electronic trigger and hammer system that I believe was one if not the first production air rifle with this type of system. The wood and metal work is fabulous. You can get lost in the bluing :) Thank you so much for sharing your passion with us.

Bought myself a p14 sporter 303 britsh. I heard they were made from the factory with spare parts and made into hunting rifles. I took it apart and its got full length bed and afew metal shims . Somebody had to do that. The rear sights are dovetailed in on the barrel and say savage ( spare parts) . The rifle is a Remington . I can buy a 30.06 eddystone version and that has the same barrel dovetail sight but its a sight that doesnt move, its a single setting . I still might pick it up later on . Id like to see what those sights are set at ,25 yards Ill do the first shot and see how high its hitting at 100 yards.

The Ferrari analogy is entirely apt for these Rigby rifles. They really are high precision functional art, and coming from a name that has deep big hunt history. Just having the name Rigby in the gun case is as special as Mike says. If only I had the budget. But I don't, so I have to "enjoy" them this way. Thank you for sharing this one.

Hey it’s me again Mike. Another fine educational and entertaining video! A lot of people don’t know that although Jack O ‘Connor wrote that his choice for one rifle to hunt the world over would be a 375 H&H Magnum, his choice for dangerous game was the 416 Rigby and he championed it out of obscurity in his writings. I know I’ll never be hunting in Africa but if I were to dream about owning a Rigby it would have to be a 275 even though I already have a custom 7x57 built on a 98 Mauser action. Of the three rifles you show in this video the one that gets me really revved up is the Kurz 300 Savage. I’ve had a bolt action 300 Savage on my want list for a long time. Preferably in a mid-sized 98 Mauser action but I’d take a decent 722 Remington. I don’t remember ever seeing any bolt action 300 Savage with double set triggers so that one has me drooling. Happy hunting boys and girls!😊

Great post as always. For Africa, a Rigby in .416 is a natural - O'Conner knew what's what over there. I hope you get a .275 one of these days; and I agree - the Kurz may be the most special of all - at least scarcity wise. Good health and good shooting my friend.

You can get some very nice commercial Mauser's in the UK. They range from basic actions imported from Mauser. To captured WW1 , WW2 and P14 /17 and beyond Mauser's reworked and then custom made, Parker Hale, Rigby, Holland and Holland. Rigby renamed the 7mm Mauser to Rigby in .27x or so as after WW1 everyone knew Mauser. (Still one of the best cartridges around for what it does, pleasure to shoot) After the 2nd Boer war the UK government wanted something like a 7mm Mauser so they went with the P13 and a cartridge similar to 7mm Mauser but not the same. It's how the P13 or P14 Mauser actioned rifle with great sights came around. As the Boers with 7mm Mausers outshot the .303 rifles. They wanted a Mauser action also as it's a great action but they did improve it. No idea why they did not extend the mag to 10 rounds. But the British 7mm for these, well it was a very hot cartridge using cordite so it would cheer out the barrels very fast and since much of the tooling and production was being made in the US, most US rifles in WW1 where just .30-06 conversions. Can still find many in the UK with .308 bull barrels The older ones in the UK are a good price with many rebarreled in more modern cartridges. I did have the change to shoot a Holland and Holland Mauser but also a modern Mauser 98 that was engraved with a beautiful stock but most are for export. The prices for firearms in the UK especially nice shotguns (moving to the US I was confused why most double barrel shotguns had no ejectors and where double trigger) In the UK a nice O/U with single t and ejectors is a great price. Same with rifles. Some older but nice martini action target rifles in .22lr with shot out bores that need the barrel sleeved are sold at prices that are almost giving them away as so many people give up their rifles and shotguns as every year its harder and harder to own. Some 5x or more less than in the USA

My custom 7X57 is based on the Peruvian mid-length action with is similar to the Argentine. I think many Mauser enthusiasts would rate these the best of the Mauser military actions. As I recall, years ago Rigby used a similar mid-length action for their .275 sporters. I would love to have a Kurz sporter in 7mm-08. Thanks for the great videos

  • @davewinter2688

I have a custom 7x57 built on a 1914 Kar 98a action. Perfect length for the 7x57. The bullet can be seated far enough out to take full advantage of the 7x57 case capacity. I can equal or exceed the 7mm-08 with that. I have another one in 8x57 with a beautiful graft line walnut stock. I basically stole that one because whoever built it left the original military stepped barrel on it and it’s in poor condition which is why I got it so cheap. The rest of the rifle is in great shape. That one is getting turned into a 257 Roberts. Same advantages for 257 with that length action as for the 7x57.

For now I'm fulfilled with an lefty Ruger 77 30-06 and a Ruger Alaskan and an lefty Winchester m70. These do all those fancy rifles cam do and I don't feel like a criminal using them in the bush. In regards to the barrel wear on the older 98 rifles, the primers up to the late 50's or early 60's were corrosive. This may have caused pitting if not flush out with water then dried and oiled after use. 303 British ammo made up untill the late 50's is corrosive. Keep up the good work.

And great handling. The winchester came with a 4 power scope and will shoot 165 gr Hornady s into one ragged hole at 100 yds.i took the scope off it handles better that way All these rifles were less than 1000 dollars and although I love the savage and the Husqvarna the winchester is my go to rifle.i m old now so if I'm afield it's the winchester 54 in3006 or the brno 2e in 22lr.gotta know what you love

Beautiful rifles. The .300 Savage is such a useful cartridge, (my all time favorite hunting cartridge) it is not surprising it was adopted in Europe also. The short action rifle looks so handy and trim. Just as a .300 Savage rifle should be! Nice that they used a useful length barrel also. Funny, how when the British make a cartridge from another cartridge, such as the .500/416 you showed us, or the .577/450 Martini, they list the bullet diameter of the original cartridge first. While in the US we list the bullet diameter of the new cartridge first, such as the .25-06 or 7mm-08 or .22-250...OR just don't mention the original cartridge at all in the name, such as the .300 Savage which was also made from the .250 Savage. 🤷‍♂ I blame it on the British driving on the -left- wrong side of the road.

I had a Ruger #1 in .416 Rigby. Amazing caliber. Sako are good weapons too. Back then, I had a Sako 375 H&H converted to the 404 Jeffery caliber by a Nuremberg gunsmith. A .416 Rigby would not have fit into the system. At that time, such weapons were not yet common, even in America. I went hunting in the Czech Republic in the 90s with a Ruger No. 1 with Mannlicher stock and 20" barrel and caliber 7x57mm. I shot a roe buck there at 180 m. 7x57 is a good hunting cartridge. I also had a pre-war Mauser in 7x57 (1937). But actually I was a target shooter and one shot was enough. I am a German from Franconia and now live in Thailand.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I'm not sure if I can hunt and own guns in Thailand as a foreigner. Things are also becoming increasingly difficult in Germany. I used to have 48 guns, 4 of which were handguns. In Texas I bought a Colt 1911 with mother of pearl

I wish you would have spent more than a glossed-over 30 seconds on the type c rifle. Much more interesting as that kind of rifle exudes Africa much more than an unobtainable new rigby.

Have you ever come across a shortened Springfield or Mauser action? I recall back in the 1930's to 1950's there were gunsmiths who would cut a action in half and remove around 1/2" to 3/4"" and weld it back up. Clearly quite a modification. In Jack O'Connor's book "The Hunting Rifle" he shows a photo of a Springfield which has been modified in this way to accept the 22-250.

Yes - I owned a couple of shortened Mauser actions - they were in 250-3000 - very "cool" and interesting; huge work to make. I sold to feverish collectors. Hard to find anyone who would do this kind of true gunmaker magic these days...although you never know. I should have kept on. At least I still have the Kurz.

You can take to most gun shops and sell on consignment - they'll sell for you and take care of finding a buyer, doing the paper work and shipping. Also, customers can use their credit cards at stores. They charge a percentage but it is often worthwhile. Best of luck.
