Watching this after 14 years. The dholl puri's origin is most probably the Bhojpuri speaking region of India and Nepal. The north India region has a bewildering range of breads. In Mauritius as a kid I used to eat dholl puri rarely as it was a speciality bread. Making the bread is quite time consuming and it was made for special occasions like weddings and offerings during special prayers. It shot to national fame as a quick and easy street food when Mauritius industrialised rapidly in the mid 1980's and large number of people village people went to towns for education and work. I used to eat 2 pairs of it during school morning break, daily. An Indian-origin man used to sell it on his bicycle. When I visited Gorakhpur in India, I did not find it being sold as street food. It is still a speciality bread there as well as in the Bhojpuri diaspora. I ate the dholl puri as a bread with meat curry in an Indian Suriname restaurant in the Netherlands. So the Mauritian dholl puri as a popular street food is peculiar to Mauritius and is not replicated in its region of origin or the Bhojpuri diaspora.

Tip: Add onions, garlic, salt, corriander and hot chilli peppers to the split pea filling when cooking..Gives your Dhal Puri a nice flavor.
