Maureen McGovern The Continental (lyrics)

Beautiful music
Dangerous rhythm
It's something daring, the Continental
A way of dancing that's really ultra new
It's very subtle, the Continental
Because it does what you want it to do
It has a passion, the Continental
An invitation to moonlight and romance
It's quite the fashion, the Continental
Because you tell of your love while you dance
Your lips whisper so tenderly
His eyes answer your song
Two bodies swaying, the Continental,
And you are saying just what you're thinking of
So, keep on dancing the Continental
For it's a song of romance and of love
You kiss while you're dancing
It's continental, oh oh oh, it's continental
You sing while you're dancing
Your voice is gentle, oh oh oh, and sentimental
You'll know before the dance is through
That you're in love with him and he's in love with you
You'll find while you're dancing
That there's a rhythm in your heart and soul,
A certain rhythm that you can't control
And you will do the Continental all the time
Beautiful music
Dangerous rhythm
Beautiful music
Dangerous rhythm
The Continental

This has to be the all time BEST rendition of this classic song that was ever made..Maureens voice is superb, and the orchestra is absolutely FANTASTIC, and it was recorded wonderfully...!! every nuance of the band can be heard so clearly and sharply!! Thank you so very much!!

I had this on vinyl as a very young man in love with the glamour of the '20s and '30s; I agree; this is easily the very best version of this classic romantic escapist song. Beautiful music!

All of a sudden I thought of this song, searched for it on KZread and this came out on top! Haven't heard this in over 40 years, and I'm so happy to have found it again!

This terrific. I heard it on Radio 2 in the car this morning and was totally overwhelmed. Maureen McGovern is a talent of gigantic proportions and I had never heard her, or of her, before. Thank you so much for posting. I am going to listen to all the rest of this wonderful woman's tracks on youtube.

I remember this song. If I didn't hear this song here on KZread, I would never have believed Maureen McGovern sang it. It didn't even sound like her. Amazing how she could sing in 1930's style. What a talent. I always loved her music.

@HotSummerof1976 I also remember this song from the summer of 76, it was on the radio a lot at the time, there was a kind of swing revival going on then. Brings back good memories!

I remember this song (before I even heard of Fred & Ginger) in the seventies as a child and fell in love with it. So evocative even then, at the age of six, of a bygone era. Now my own little girl loves it...

Equipment...techniques..and styles move along over the years but this has to be the best version of this great song. They've captured the flavour of the original and improved on it....and doesn't she sing it well....wonderful.

This version is actually superior to how it's sung in the original film. I was visiting Britain in the summer of 1976 and heard this, and thought it was excellent. Of course it never got played in the USA, and I don't think I've ever heard it again till just now.

My father lived in Miami, FL in the 60s and 70s; he used to sing this song to me in the 80s--when I was little. ;) He *did* visit Europe (England, Austria, Germany, Spain, et. al.) when he was 18, though...so maybe he heard it there.

I translated this song into Urdu because I'm cool.
