Mauna Kea: From Ancient Navigators to Modern Astronomers | SLICE TRAVEL | FULL DOC

Over 1,500 years ago, the Polynesians from the Marquesas islands crossed the seas for some 4000 km and arrived on the Hawaiian coast. Guided on their voyage only by the stars, they were the first astronomers of this archipelago. They settled at the foot of a huge dormant volcano they called the White Mountain.
Today, Mauna Kea, which rises to 4,200 m above sea level, has become one of the high places of astronomy in the world. From this magnificent viewpoint, Serge Brunier casts his eyes towards the heavens and further into the cosmos, wondering about one of the great enigmas of modern cosmology. Although astronomers were able to describe the architecture of the Universe and reconstruct its history based on Einstein’s equations, this model works with 96% of inexplicable elements. Most of the material and the energy which make up the universe is still completely unknown to them!
As Serge Brunier arrives at the foot of the giant telescopes of the Hawaiian mountain, will he manage to unravel the mystery of dark matter and dark energy and thus reveal the dark side of the universe?

Thrilled to see this. I spent 5 years on Maui downhill from Haleakala observatory. It's been two years, and the thing I miss most about Hawaii is the night sky.

@@SLICETravel 16:41 The Polynesians were extraordinary. According to Robert Greene's "Mastery" they could navigate the Pacific by laying on the floor of their tiny little boat, feel the ocean flowing on top of the Earth moving underneath them as they watched the stars. They basically stayed still. This is high level human understanding of the environment. And we think we know what's what!

Mauna kea and Mauna loa are the 2 mountains that can be snow covered on the Big Island of Hawaii. On Maui we have Haleakala otherwise none of other mountains in Hawaii have snow. Snow boarding and surfing on the same day is exhilarating. We fill the truck bed with snow and take it to the ocean for the kids to play in before it melts!

I've lived in four different time zones. Each location was beautiful... but Maui had that night sky...
