Iirc prior to Golden Girls she was known for playing sweet and modest characters, while betty white for playing bombshell characters, and they switched for GG and it worked really well.

@@ilovethetampabaylightning92 German is easier to learn than English: it is far more internally consistent and has fewer exceptions. I have never learned Spanish but I keep hearing it is supposed to be one of the easiest ones to learn, and my little brother learned it when he got to pick. Spanish wasn't an option when I went to school (we only had the options conversational French, grammar focused French, conversational German, and grammar focused German which I took because not understanding the structure behind it would drive me batty). French sure isn't one of the easiest, but not one of the most difficult either. I had English classes from 4th grade to 12th, German classes half a year in year 6, from 7th-9th, French for half a year in grade 6 plus from 10th until 11th. Everyone had to learn English, my oldest little sister picked French 6th-9th and then even got the option to learn Japanese. My little brother picked Spanish first and then Mandarin I believe, and my youngest little sister just went with German and French for the sake of getting an in on the classic languages plus germanic and romance language families in case she wanted to learn more later. To use the classic quote about English: "English doesn’t just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.” -James D. Nicoll And on top of that, you have to keep in mind local variations like American English, British English, Canadian English, and Australian English (plus Indian English if one has the fortitude for keeping up with that extremely different version, which IMO is every bit as valid as American English on account of both having been English colonies) as sometimes the exact same line can mean opposite things e.g. in British English and American English. Similarly to how things work with North American French, France-French, African French, and so on, similarly with the various Portuguese subtypes and Spanish subtypes.

I was wondering, because in this clip, Vivienne says she is 47. I know she was 51 when she started the Golden Girls. I don’t know what year this was, but Maude ran from ‘72-‘78 I think, so I was confused!

Bea Arthur had such great comedic timing.

She was only 38 when she started in Maude and only 44 when she finished - probably just the fashion and hair but she looks a lot older than she actually was in real life.

It’s really just the fashion; if you look at her face she doesn’t have many wrinkles, or at least no more than you’d expect in your late 30s.

They actually used subtle aging makeup on Rue during her time on Maude to make her look closer to Bea Arthur in age. Rue's character Vivian was supposed to be Maude's best friend from college which would have made the character about 50 but as you say Rue was not even forty yet.

@@sansomdela It's rumored Bea Arthur had a facelift in real life between the end of Maude and the star of Golden Girls. Rue absolutely had one while doing the Golden Girls. In the first season of GOlden Girls, Rue looks older than she does later on.

When rue started the GG she looked so much younger than everyone else. Once the season came to an end she looked older than some of the other girls. Either way she was always gorgeous, didn’t need to touched her face at all

I love the line "you look a hundred years younger!" and the line about her plastic surgeon "He's a miracle worker!"

@@ericholck3914 I think with how prevalent it is now in "everyday culture", it just makes sense to us. However, back then it wasn't like now and I don't think your average person thought about it or even really knew.

I love how Betty Rue and Bea have paired up prior to Golden Girls.

I remember watching Rue and Betty on Mama's Family. Then Rue and Bea on Maude. I'm so thankful they all came together with Estelle to create one of my most favorite shows. I've never passed up a GG episode. Never.

When you watch the entire episode you will see Maude getting more and more jealous of Vivienne's new look. Vivienne will follow Maude upstairs and let her have it. Then before your eyes they become Blanche and Dorothy. Its hilarious, and for once I was happy to see Rue's character rub her good looks in Bea's characters face.

I watching this at 57 and remember watching it then when I was young thinking 47 is old 😜 Now I look in the mirror and see a older wiser hopeful women looking back at me. While I can’t Turn back Time like Cher I can dream of my youth and one day I might wake up a Princess 👸🏻

I always thought Rue was the person who connected the girls of The Golden Girls.....Rue was in Maude with Bea and she was also on Mama's Family with Betty

My forever crush ,Adrienne Barbeau. Everyone always wondered why as a little kid why I always wanted to watch this show. Almost 50 years now and she still makes the heart thump.

@No U Eh. I think what we see on TV and movies now includes a lot more editing, surgery and botox. They quite literally swap out body parts. Change height. You name it they can do it, and we think it's real. Sure those things play a huge factor. But I think what we see as "young" now, is 100% fake.

Rue was always a knockout, at any age.

Everyone saying she doesn’t have the golden girls accent but it just sounds the same to me! American accent with the hard vowel sounds and strong rrr sound ??

It’s bizarre to hear her real voice but I can hear a twinge of Blanche and her facial expressions too.

Rue was a stunner.

Love to see these episodes. Crazy how 40 & 50 yr olds were portrayed in this show & G.G. IN G.G. they were in their 50s of varying ages and made them seem in their 60s+.

This is so funny! I can't imagine this storyline being done today by any modern actresses. Most of them would be too embarrassed...as most of them have a face full of botox and fillers!! Lol it wouldn't be acting at all!

Continuity prob: Maude stated that she and Vivian were “supposed to wait” to get facelifts - ummm, Maude had one in Season 01.
