I love that they did both false stops. Those aren’t a joke, they’re PART OF THE SONG.

No one wrote hooks like Mathew Sweet. His voice is great too it just perfectly matches his music.

I saw them do this song on the Tonight Show way back when Jay Leno was the guest host for Carson. They kicked total ass on that performance as well.

This is ...easily...one of the all time champion power pop songs.....ever. Just perfect.

This is the Matthew Sweet I remember and love. I bought 100% Fun in the summer of 95.

Something is wrong when a song this perfect is not a huge hit. I’ve been singing it since it was released.

It was pretty big then, top 50 pop hit and reached the 2nd spot on the rock charts. But I agree it should’ve topped some charts. So damn perfect

It was a huge hit, reached #2 on... One of the charts, I can't remember which... It just didn't have the staying power b/c Oasis released "What's the Story, Morning Glory" in the fall & MTV started playing nothing but BritPop

Awesome! And the legendary Ivan Julian on lead guitar!!!

"I'm sick of myself when I look at you"- What a brutally perfect line about the pain of unrequited love.

It's crammed with great lines. "World that's ugly and a lie/its hard to even want to try" is like the universal view of half the 20 year olds in the world. Brilliant how he keeps the words direct and simple and catchy, yet they capture so much.

Still one of the best songs of all-time, never get tired of this tune, Matthew Sweet was underrated IMO.

That's very cool. Hard to describe but those were exciting times musically and culturally. I saw them at First Ave then. This song started me on the road of rabid MS collecting most of which I still have.

lucky you!!! this is my favorite version of one of my all-time fav songs the entire band is just powerful and forceful as hell, and the sweet- lloyd combo is truly a four-handed guitar monster

i've been trying to write a song for 2 decades hoping to come up with something remotely close to this one in vain. for me, there's something so incomprehensibly sweet and painstakingly catchy with how he put the bridge to chorus melody on the simple three chords progression. and imo, even he couldn't recreate after this. it's that special.

Love this tune, and this just rocks. When they cut to the shot of the Twin Towers after the performance, made my heart jump for a second. Then I remembered - oh yeah, '95.

When this album came out, I bought it pretty quickly. Great pop-rock.

Saw him at the Ventura Theater when this album came out. Excellent. Louder than loud.

Saw them the same week this was taped at the Academy of Music and met the fellas after the show. They all signed my levi denim jacket. That drummer Stuart....total badass. Great, talented dudes.

I remember seeing that thinking this heaviest thing I ever saw on late night tv. Amazing fade to commercial with the twin towers at dusk.

He really pissed off his #1 Robert Quine with the mix of this album. Quine was the real shredder but was also a bit touchy about "being mixed out of the album ". Julian, also an ex-Voidoid, was no slouch, nor was Lloyd. Great songs made greater by killer bands around him.

I totally dig this album, and I dig drummers who likes to BANG THOSE FUCKING CANS LIKE THERES NO TOMORROW

This album was/is SO GOOD...the WHOLE album. At this time I was into Morrissey, The Smiths, Social Distortion, Front 242, Stone Roses, Beastie Boys and Iron Maiden...diversity. Excellent live performance and I love the fade to commercial with the TWIN TOWERS skyline image...should have just rebuilt both of them.

+F1JV Ya, I recall Matthew said people were telling him "why don't you write some more upbeat songs" after the darker Altered Beast. The product was this great collection of yet more dark lyrics, cleverly hidden in big power pop sound. Coming off two previous successful records, he seemed to still be in the whirlwind. I'll never forget meeting him at the time at a Best Buy in MN and having him sign my CD. Afterward he raced through the store grabbing literally armfuls of music for himself before they rushed him out. He told an assistant "don't worry, I'll pay for these myself". Great times - thanks Matt.

They are not going out of style anytime soon. The guitar is one of the great expressive instruments, along with the piano, violin, sax, and synthesizer.
