Matthew Desmond, "Evicted"

Supplemented with statistics from court records, police call logs, school reports, and other documents, Desmond’s exhaustive fieldwork comprises a wrenching portrait of urban poverty and shows that safe, affordable housing is as crucial as jobs, education, and other social safety nets in fostering stable cities.

well if you are male I'd say you are being very modest and that your suffering is probably harder than you could say. I get that. I think that in general individual cases of triumph are numerous but does not necessarily illustrate the point that policy toward the poor is predominantly less generous in some or most places than its policy towards (shall we say) itself...and the suffering caused by that stuff...is unspeakable because it is so prevalent and hard to get a handle on in so many ways. I get that too.

Lived in the projects most of my life. Major problems include NIMBY, the value of land sharply increasing, the illusion of the American dream (high demand-low supply - everyone wants their own seperate home), increased business and corporate presence in housing and renting, various failed large public housing projects, the serious problems in the ones still around, and the political (including bigoted) concerns of why should we have housing programs and whose it going to, and lastly developers lack incentives to build affordable housing.

His book is very insightful. But, I wonder whether or not the professor did or is going to donate some of the proceeds from his book to the cause. Ofcourse he doesn't have to, but many times we identify a problem with the expectation that someone else's money should fix it and not our own. Don't know if that's the case here, just curious. Great research though.

At the federal level, there is way more funding for veterans and senior housing versus single mothers. The VASH vouchers are prioritized ahead of increasing section 8 vouchers. As a social worker, I am happy to hear children are being prioritized in your community although I think it would be far better if there was a universal housing voucher like Professor Desmond argues.

maybe for the well connected and protected and employed, for her it might be the hole she finally slips through in that shabby safety net. For many people safety is a birth-ensured conviction that virtually ensures all these essentials are in place. If you think she was too stupid to qualify you might rethink that opinion. Most of the privileged rich asshats in power feel just like you but what are u all so glad to leave behind? Maybe the failure of true happiness? Maybe the idea that wealth involves hurtful decisions every second and that cant be ignored. And if that's ok remember the Constitution and your civics classes as a kid and how the American Experiment in Deliberate Constitutionalism (with bs like liberty and justice for all) is being betrayed this second as long as the well to do think like u. I don't take comments by the way. I have heard them all my life...

Seems like we need to get back to the basics and follow Gods laws. This way there would be no family without a father, a mother and children. We can not solve any problem if we don't have a family unit with a mother, father and children. Children need both parents. Let's start talking about this and then try to solve the problems that come with single family parents.

Many men perished during the Korean and Vietnam wars. What was put in place to protect fatherless families, welfare, incentivize mothers to stay single, even new mothers today. Never thought of putting an expiration date. You are absolutely right, fix the first problem. A father and mother figure maximizes the chances of well balanced children.

I think we inflict suffering onto the poor IN ORDER to try to hide from our own bad conscience, or should I say I think the rich inflicts suffering onto the poor as kind of a "projection" mechanism. Bad conscience in my opinion is about apathy regarding double standards, strained arguments about deservingness etc...

@@lowfivelou Nope, he's right. Black women have the HIGHEST rate of having children out of wedlock. Poverty + children = more poverty. Common sense stuff. Now top this with living in an expensive liberal city, you're destined to stay in poverty. I know this because I've seen in over and over and over again with people i grew up around. They have kids in their late teens to early 20s with some deadbeat. The deadbeat rarely comes around or vanishes. Now they're stuck having to take care of the kids themselves (or with gov assistance). So now they get stuck in the loop of welfare and even become entitled because of it. so they start pointing the finger and blaming everyone else but themselves for being irresponsible. You know how I escaped that trap? Using common sense. Don't have kids you can't afford, learn a skill valuable to the market, keep your expenses low, and invest everything you have leftover. You can easily escape poverty no later than age 25-30 if you apply this.. I have.
