This is such a fabulous episode! I love and appreciate all of your episodes. But this one - just wow. Profoundly applicable to today! Thank you, Dr. Martin, Hank and John!
What great understanding you have shared! I Love these truths, and am grateful to feel the spirit as you teach so very well! Thank You!!!
I shouldn't be listening to the podcast when I am driving to work. I couldn't stop the tears this morning. Thank you for the beautiful insights.
Thank you Brother Bytheway and Dr. Martin. A loved one of mine was badly bullied and I needed to hear both your counsel and testimonies. We need a workshop/fireside online for the youth and YSA Brother Bytheway for those who've endured bullying. Some are our RM's who were bullied serving missions.
I too was bullied in our home by my older sister, she bullied me from the womb..this set me up for 8 boys to continue her sayings…I have PTSD due to this, I’m the only child out of my family that’s (10) children ACTIVE in church…the scriptures have saved me, The first scripture that I memorized was the 23rd psalm, from a child, and that scripture kept me going, until I was introduced to the book of Mormon, and in the book of Mormon in Alma 36, verse three I have memorized that one clear through two verse 26 and 27, they are my Go to’s for trials…which I’m well aquatinted with
I loved this lesson so much!! Thank you! One of my favorite scriptures is 1 Nephi 22:26 “26 And because of the righteousness of his people, Satan has no power; wherefore, he cannot be loosed for the space of many years; for he hath no power over the hearts of the people, for they dwell in righteousness, and the Holy One of Israel reigneth” Satan was bound because of their righteousness! We can do this too!! We NEED to do this to establish Zion!
Absolutely wonderful lesson. Thank you so much for sharing your personal trials and the way you overcame them.

Tears streaming as you described my life, bullied by my peers, bullied and belittled by adults in my life and even family. Always to the make me believe that I was worthless. I struggle every day to feel like I have value. I needed this today. Thank you so much Dr. Jan, Hank andJohn!

Jan was a dear friend of mine. I understand all too well what she went through
The boy’s chose the perfect person for today’s lesson. Listening and watching you almost makes your challenge seem impossible to believe. You are sooo beautifully defined with brilliance and confidence by God. Thanks for sharing a painful and personal experience, along with the healing. ❤
Dr. Marten my heart goes out to you. I was also bullied all through school. Elementary to high school and even now as an adult! I'm 52 by the way. I have people who talk about me behind my back because of the 2ay I dress and because I'm an extreme extrovert, and because I talk a lot to get to know people. I always have a story that relates to others so sometimes people think I'm lying.
Randy Bott said this in one of our stake conferences “If you want a slot in the Celestial kingdom, you will fight the adversary every day if your life”. So true. Your talk about mountains and valleys brought this quote to my mind, so I wanted to share it with you.

Good quote and teaching. FYI-Brigham Young said it first. (Discourses of Brigham Young, sel. John A. Widtsoe [1954], 392) Definitely inspired nonetheless.
I love all of your lessons, but have already listened to this one three times. Thank you Dr. Martin, and as always, John and Hank. I am extremely grateful for your podcast. It has blessed my life as well as the lives of my family.
I appreciated Jans comments on her experience with bullying. It is such a hurtful thing and sadly others who do that do not realize the damage it does. I appreciated her ability to overcome through the scriptures and through God's love and power. Just in this podcast she has been blessing to me with her knowledge and insight. Thank you.

As you were talking about the temptations of Christ, a thought came to me. John was talking about how you’d have a great following if people saw you jump of the temple and be saved etc. but that’s not what the Savior did. I loved what all of you are teaching here and it made me think of the prophecies of how many believers will be fooled by the anti-Christ in the last days because of the incredible miracles he will do. The Saviors miracles were were to solve needs, to teach, to lead man to Heavenly Father. The anti-Christ will be building himself up for the praise of man. Not really able to explain my thoughts about this but I think learning of Jesus and learning to hear Him, we will be able to know the difference.
Thank you, it was wonderful to meet the Sorenson family (sp?). I'm grateful that the podcast is going on in memory of the husband and father who began this wonderful blessing to help so many study The Gospel! ♥️😊 I'm thankful to know they are all feeling The Lord's help with this difficult trial of loss 🙏 ♥️.
I was bullied too and appreciate your story of healing.

Bullying was more common back then and I felt myself in her experience and it has taken me many years to forgive and heal from it. I’m so sorry for all who have been subjected to it at the hands of those who should have been their friends. It has given me a lot of compassion for others and I’m grateful for that. I loved Jan’s healing tactics and finally learned to use them as well. That was perfect, thank you for being so honest and helpful. ❤❤❤
I was particularly touched by Jan's personal story about bullying and how memorizing scriptures helped change her beliefs about how she viewed herself. I resolved that I also want to start memorizing some scriptures moving forward. I found the Doctrinal Mastery app allows me to chose custom content from within Gospel Library (so basically anything you want) and add it to My Content filter, and voila - I'm working to memorize my first scripture right now (Abraham 2:8)!! Thank you, thank you! ❤️
I have not listened to the whole of Pt 1, as yet. At the half way point I was struck by Dr Martin's discussion of the temptations and bullying, perhaps even by people we know. At my urban Mennonite church we are in the midst of a series on the book of Psalms, inspired by my telling of the great podcasts with Dr Hopkin and Dr Huntsman last August. The speaker has chosen to speak about Psalm 55. In the realm of the Holy Spirit is at work, an Orthodox voice student of mine said that yesterday, Wednesday 02/01, is when Psalm 55 was read in the process of reading all 150 Psalms in the month. Also, there is a tradition of reading the Psalm that leads to your next birthday on a daily basis. His father, 54, is reading Psalm 55 every day. This Psalm contains challenges of abuse, of bullying and our response. V 23 - "cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he will sustain thee". Thanks be to God. There are no coincidences in the Holy Spirit.
Amazing! Thank you, thank you!
I love all of this so much!!! I would especially love if Dr. Jan would post of list of the scriptures she memorized that helped her overcome the lies about who she is and remember the truth about who she is after being bullied so much. This would be especially helpful in this time and world we live. I’m sure that everyone has to find their own to some degree but little children who are beginning to go through this and young adults who’ve had so much of this could really use a jump start to even hear these and begin to believe they have worth. Thank you so much for all the personal experiences that help us make the scriptures personal for us!♥️

It's not that easy. What works for you may be different. It took her time, earnest seeking, communing with the Lord through the Holy Spirit and repetitive memorization. It will take all that for the scriptures to be effective for you too. The promise is there already, but you have to do the work for the blessing to come.
I taught my first ever Sunday School class on 1/1/23! I’m teaching adults. I’ve served in RS, YW, and Primary over the last 48 years, but never SS, and never brethren! I am loving Come Follow Me! The previous adult SS teacher shared your pod cast with me. I have gained so many insights and clarifications. There is so much to teach. I even asked the class 2 weeks ago if they’d mind staying an additional hour! I feel like I need to pay you tuition! Thanks!
Thanks so much for sharing your personal experiences with recovering from bullies and Satan's efforts to make us feel inadequate by looking up to God and believing His words.
OK - I'm a Sunday School teacher - and you are so right - how can this ever be taught in 50 minutes - 50 minutes barely gets us thru the 2nd temptation - I thought I understood these scriptures - but now I have a whole new light - - I've been preparing now for 3 days - and am only starting the 3rd temptation - Of course, I will modify the lesson to fit the time - Keep these up as I learn so much - and I have a few people in class that also listen/watch these - I'm retired now so I have the time to put it - I feel for those that are still working and have to prepare - Love the discussion .
Great job guys! The closer we stay to God and studying His Word, we are much better equipped to recognize and stave off Satan's attempts to deceive us; and are stronger Christians to put on the whole armor of God. This is the main thing I instill in new Christians so that they will be ready for these attacks. Keep up the good work guys. God is proud of you; and many depend on your knowledge and teachings. God Bless you all. Amen
I am happy that you have Jan back. I love your podcast. Thank you so much
I love all these conversations, and this one was particularly helpful to me! Thank you very much, Dr Martin, for sharing personal experience as well as spiritual and academic insights.
Fantastic insights from a fellow skyline eagle! Thank you Dr Martin
Thanks for sharing your Testimonies and your examples. LIFE is good! Those you guys bring in as guests and the topics are unique. I am sure that Shannon plays a big part as does all the staff.
This testimony about bullying and how truth from scripture can help us know truth and not what we were called or told about ourselves. I needed to hear that. These podcasts are revolutionary. To God be the glory!!!
Great lesson as always. Just a few notes that I thought of while listening. One thing that stands out to me about the temptation story is that the Savior was the only one there on the mountain, so any account we have of the event comes from him, and it's something he wanted us to know. One of the greatest things about it is when Satan appeared before him, he didn't use whatever feeling he was feeling to judge it, he used the written word of God. It teaches us to look to the scriptures in times like this and, like was mentioned in the lesson, if we can recite those scriptures it's much more powerful than any willpower we can muster up. Another thing I thought of was when you guys were talking about the long fast that Jesus went on. I know a few people personally who have done 6 week (42 days) fasts before. They say that there's a moment in the fast where it feels as though the heavens open up to you and you can ask anything and get an answer.
Thank you Dr. Jan. I like how you approach the scriptures and your personal experience.
I loved every part of this! So so applicable! Going to share with everyone I love!! 💕
Fabulous - just love these insights, thank you
I loved this lesson, thank you so much for all the quotes and amazing lessons today.
As always I just love your podcast. I loved hearing Dr Martin's insights and experiences. Thank you all so much for the work you do and for these amazing podcasts! We are so blessed to have so many resources at our finger tips!
Wow what an amazing episode this week. I connected so much to Dr. Jan. This is why this follow him needs to continue. I have allowed Satan get into my head and myself worth went away and when I got enough strength to turn to the lord I felt his love for me and I got so much strength to keep fighting. Thank you all for your wisdom
Such a wealth of inspiration, thank you 💝
Thank you Jan for sharing your story. It’s inspiring to hear what helped you overcome your obstacles. Thanks to all of you for your insights. I have so much to ponder and put into practice in my life!
Thank you very much😍👏
Oh, Jan. Thank you for sharing. You are so beautiful and lovely that I would never had guessed you were bullied. Carry on. You give us so much.🙏.
....that's what i've loved about living in Utah...the mountains keep me LOOKING UP...(life elevated right😇)...KEEP LOOKING UP...
Love it. Thank you 😊.
One of the greatest temptations was to use his power to get people to believe in him.. when Satan took Jesus on the mountain he wasn’t showing him the riches of the world but instead was showing him the people of the world. Satan told Jesus that he would give to Jesus all the people in the world their adoration and love. He was saying that he could influence everyone to believe in Jesus. Remember that Satan had to put things up for Jesus that really would tempt him.
Breaks my heart to hear she didn't come across well to her peers. Never heard it put that way, but can totally relate. Peers are not the best judge...God is.
I love the thoughts shared to overcome our past! Thanks! Anyone here use the note function in the lds scripture app? It used to automatically add a link in the text box that would take you to the scripture where the note was added. This stopped, anyone know how to turn it back on?
So, the number 40, very interesting, and don't forget about Alibaba and the FORTY thieves!!! lol
Thank you I'd like to see ALL of these references in the 'show notes'. They are not. 10:40 Holland's BYU March 1999, Cast Not Away Therefore Your Confidence. 53:43 "One may not look where he is going, but will go where he is looking." 53:43. The Holy Spirit leads you up. Good to think about. Gen X's had a difficult time growing up. The movies were anti children, the attitude was just adults didn't want to be bothered in general. The millennials came along and then it was 'baby on board', helmets, safe playgrounds, pampering, etc. Neil Howe in Generations and The Fourth Turning addresses this. Neil Howe has been interviewed by Tony Robbins recently and others in the past and they are on youtube if interested regarding every 80+- years, we have a "Turning."
I’m trying to find the quote about going where you look from Elder Sill but I can’t find it in either of the talks referenced in the show notes. Does anyone have a reference for that quote so I can find it?

I would like to go into the wilderness to be closer to God, but as a woman, I feel uncomfortable going off into a place by myself where I might be vulnerable, whether to animals or to people with evil designs. Men have the privilege of being able to go off by themselves and they often don't understand why women feel uncomfortable doing that.
I hate that that happened to you! You are adorable and I see not one flaw!😇🥰
