Interesting points that caught my attention: 1. Take it easy, don’t stress and don’t worry. 2. Don’t force immersion with stuff you don’t understand. 3. Sentence mining from reading material still helps with understanding listening aka not have to only mine from listening content. 4. Milage makes understanding easier. 5. Even a relaxed approach to making sentence cards shows true results after 8-10 months. I’m sure their were more things but those stood out to me! Btw talking about slice of life anime I wanna recommend people to watch the Pokémon sun and moon anime due to the variety of how the characters speak, how easy it is to follow even if you don’t catch all the words (comprehensive input) and just cause it’s a good anime! Also there is an app called Easy Japanese that has easy news with audio and sometimes video and it’s a great way to find I+1 sentences for otherwise difficult subjects!

I've been binge listing to these interviews while hammering out Japanese Anki cards. It's super interesting to hear so many different views on the process. I definitively would like to see more interviews in the future.

For people who used both, is qolibri a better dictionary source than yahoo!辞書? I'm in the early stages of the monolingual transition and can't decide on which one is better. I find myself using yahoo more since it's a web page and i can quickly scan the words i don't know with rikaichan.

In the YogaMatt podcast they said that any less than 3 hours of active immersion a day meant you wouldn't have much progress, but in this video he said he did just 30-45mins a day and Matt said that was good? I'm confused... :/

Sorry if that confuses you. So 30-45 minutes of active watching anime or dramas. Since I work here in Japan, during the day I’m able to eavesdrop on coworker’s conversations or have 1 hour+ long meetings, where I have to pay attention so my active immersion is lot more than 30-45 minutes. Sorry I didn’t explain that better during the interview. I agree with Matt that around 3 hours of active immersion a day is good especially if you do not live in Japan.

Sorry for posting this on an unrelated video (and for the second time) but I just need guidance/help. Honestly I'm getting really confused right now and I haven't even start learning Japanese. Can someone please tell me if this is right? 0. Start immersion (Don't ever stop) 1. Use RTK 1? But put the kanji on the front side and keyword on the back. When using anki try to remember the keyword (but you dont have to be 100% correct) you just have to be in the ballpark/accurate. (The question I have here is do I write out the kanji while looking at it? How many times? Do I have to create stories for each kanji? If not do I need the RTK1 book at all? can I just search up the kanji list for it?) (What is the purpose of the RTK book) 2. Learn some grammar using tae kim's grammar guide (do step 2 and 2.1 same time) 2.1 Sentence mine from the guide and from other places. Also mine words/vocab (The question here is how many? How many of each? How much vocab?) 3. Make more bilingual sentence cards - (about 2.5k sentence cards is what I read from you?) 4. Get somewhat fluent 5. Do RTK1+3 the old way (But I dont understand when do I need to do this step? When will I know its time?)

Matt VS Japan there isn’t anything there yet. The only thing there is “stage 0 and stage 1” but after that there’s nothing. So I’m still as confused as I was before.

Self help books seem to be really popular among Japanese people from what I can tell

it would be pretty interesting to see if someone could pass the JLPT N2 purely through AJATT or MIA without doing any specific studying for the JLPT. I'm sure it can be done but I wonder how long you have to invest before having all the knowledge necessary. It seems like it could take a while just because this kind of testing doesn't really test how fluent you are in Japanese, but how accurate you are with your knowledge of specific grammatical patterns (for the grammar section) and your ability to determine the nuance of meaning in a written passage (the reading section). I feel like you could be well beyond N2 level in your fluency but not be as familiar with the specific vocabulary and grammar used in the JLPT. I kinda feel like someone who attempted N2 purely through immersing in native content would have to be N1 level before being able to pass the test just to make sure their vocabulary and grammar is so expansive that it covers most of N2 pretty thoroughly. Like if you just spend all your time immersed in anime and manga, maybe you'll miss some of the N2 content that isn't so common in this kind of media.

I have an AJATTer friend who recently literally got 100% on the JLPT N1. When I personally look at practice tests, they're laughably easy. I think anyone who does solid AJATT for a few years would have no problem passing the JLPT N1. I know people who've done it in around 2 years without any specific JLPT study.

No. It (and Anki itself) is just a supplement. If it's boring and you can't handle it then immersing yourself everyday consistently would be fine on its own. That's how you get fluent anyways (through immersion).

Matt you were great but hopefully the next person you talk to is more articulate. I teach kids and he answers questions similar to a 3 year old. He talks but there is no substance to what he says. You did a great job trying to flesh it out though. Sorry but it’s a case of good host but poor guest.

jesus christ dude he's answering the questions and retelling his history, what more do you want. thousands of hours of japanese immersion doesn't come bundled with public speaking mastery in english. plus his speaking disposition is on par with previous guests.

I listened again this morning its fine, it was more me not being capable to follow than anything else. I live in Japan too in Yokohama. 飲み放題 shouldn't be allowed it just makes people into assholes as I'm sure you'll agree. I'll leave the comment up as a testament to my stupidity. Take it easy
