Yes fr, I’m tired of seeing “comedians” complain that they can’t say anything anymore when they make shitty edgy jokes. “Oh I went on stage and talked about how much I hate transgender people and everyone is upset” yeah because you can’t just go say offensive shit and expect it to be funny, that’s the middle school style of comedy.

When writing a joke, your intent should be to make the audience laugh. If your intent first and foremost is to offend, then you’re more than likely just writing an offensive statement. The best way to write a joke about something dark/offensive is to make sure it makes the people it’s about laugh. A good domestic violence joke should make victims of the issue laugh, rather than sound like something your drunk uncle would say at Thanksgiving.

I went into the special almost immediately after the release. The thing was not yet blown out of proportion. Fresh eyes... Well, like the whole audience then and there I didn't even notice. It's not the best joke, it's not the worst. I wasn't even a fan of Matt Rife, watched him on a very few occasions, didn't even know about him being famous for crowd work (I don't have TikTok). I went in almost blindly. And I liked the set. The mic drop was a bit much but apart from that, I liked it. Everything about this affair is so stupid. Not even worth mentioning. Matt will be fine.

Rife talked about hanging with and getting advice from Dave Chappelle leading up to the special... and that joke is straight out of the Dave Chappelle playbook. The problem is, Dave can pull it off and make it funny and did the work over decades to earn it. Matt Rife just doesn't have the chops to pull that move off... not yet at least. It sounds like he has worked his way up through the club level stuff but jumped ahead recently... so some learning to do.

Dude is rich af, he’s not getting cancelled. And as a comic it must suck to get stereotyped and heckled by women every show when you’re building an act. Maybe his career benefits from a few years of more men at his shows. Also, dude is loaded and is a real comic w/ an ego - you wanna be funny and gain the respect of your peers.

The problem is he hasn't been funny to get more men to watch him. Women will always go watch a sexy comic, that's how even Dane Cook had a run as one of the best selling stand-ups out there. The problem with Cook and now Rife is they let the quantity of ticket sales get in the way of the quality of their material and therefore the quality of their audience. If he was really that unhappy, Rife could've pulled a Chappelle and went underground to reinvent himself. But he was too in love with his paycheck and lifestyle, so he continued with the tried and true method of hacky jokes. So even if he gets some attention due to controversy, that won't bring him new quality fans, because he just isn't very good at this stage in his career. Some poor souls might make the mistake to buy tickets for him once, just to see what the fuss is about. But if he doesn’t manage to turn them into fans, it's over for him.

My thoughts exactly. Ride’s joke wasn’t anything crazy and didn’t deserve the degree of backlash that it got, but the fact that 1. His audience is mostly young women 2. He put the joke right at the front of the special where the most people (including people who aren’t into that style of comedy) would see it and 3. It wasn’t honestly that good of a joke pretty much set him up for failure.

Comedians have known this since stand up became a thing. You can only be as edgy as you are *actually* funny. If you aren't that funny, and you try to be edgy, you're just gonna come across like a douchebag, which will also serve to remind that same audience that you're not actually that funny. So now they're pissed off on two fronts. Way too many current era, up-and-coming "comics" got into the scene because they just wanted a platform to say shitty things; they thought being mean WAS the comedy.
