Delayed penalty. Goalie was skating off for the extra man, the whistle hadn't been blown yet on that replay. If goalie stopped they could've gotten a penalty for too many men on the ice so that's why he had to continue to the bench and not stop.

This is a tough one for me. On the one hand, 6'7" Rempe should be allowed to deliver a body check like everyone else. That's how hockey works. However, the principal point of contact is clearly Bastian's head. With what we now know about brain injuries, I just cannot accept the idea that a very tall person can hit someone directly in the head and be free and clear. As a hockey fan, I am very comfortable with body hits and also fighting. But I don't want the sport to include direct hits to an opponent's head. I think this type of hit should be a severe penalty. No hits directly to the head. Ever.

Bastian is 6'4" but was 5'7" at the point of contact. That in essence was the problem. I do believe the major was warranted due to the head contact. I'm of the opinion that Remkpe knew Bastian was in a vulnerable position a split second before the contact. He was still 15 feet away from him when Bastian lost his balance. That's enough time to see, but Rempke had committed to the contact so I don't see him purposely avoiding Bastian there. What the heck was the devil's training staff thinking allowing Nathan out to start the second period. Once his adrenaline started going down after the Trouba fight, it looked like he was ready to die.

The entire time you still had your top line together and the majority of the D core. Of the Devils players that missed 10+ games, they are the top two centers, top line winger, and the top 2 D man. Amazing a veteran clean defenceman in Reilly gets 5 games for a cross check (where his stick came out of his hands aka he let go when he realized where he hit him to lower impact and not injure the player) Rempe has 10 games, 5 injuries and 5 fights responding to questionable hits. Reilly doesn't injure anyone for 10 years, gets up high once and gets 5 games lol. Get this guy under control before he puts someone in a coma. He's a rookie playing the brand of hockey the league says they don't want but clearly it's getting views so they won't care I guess. Parts of me love watching it but parts of me wonder what a hit like that on Bedard would look like for his health.... Imagine taking that guy out of the league with a hit from a 6'7 psycho path that'll never leave a mark on hockey other than injuring people and getting beat up by real fighters. It'll get worse come playoffs....

Ive read numerous reasons why fighting might be making a comeback, relative to the game and rules and so forth. But part of me has to wonder if there is any incentive for the NHL to slowly allow it to come back because that is part of what the fans want. Hockey may be safer without fighting but it certainly is not as entertaining. I grew up in the 80s and 90s and saw a lot of fighting in the minors and majors and sometimes I wonder whether all the crackdowns actually negatively impacted hockey's interest levels. Not to mention the fact that fighting existed because guys were going after the star players and they needed to stick up for them lest they lose them to injuries. Avid fan and former player here myself. I don't think fighting came out of a vacuum. I get why they came down on fighting what with how it caused issues for the enforcers, and I also get why it would easily see a comeback. Just a thought. And I'm not too surprised to see a kid like Rempe with these stats because I think it's been coming.

Much less. And that's the problem. They took checking out of the young player leagues so you have guys coming into the NHL that just started playing a hitting game as adults. They have no idea how to protect themselves and safely take a hit. Hitting is way down but injuries are going up. Constantly see players turn around when a check is coming and get boarded, or guys coming across the middle of the ice with their head down as they've done all their lives, except in the NHL the older guys blast you off the ice when you do that, or at least the players over 30 do.

And guys like him are fine with that. That’s the way it used to be. The game self-policed itself. You wanna take a run at a guy be prepared to answer the bell. 10min misconduct or game misconduct doesn't dierectly effect man power. You can be assessed a misconduct in addition to a major or minor penalty, but can also be assessed as a standalone penalty. Misconduct penalties are generally given for just being a dick. Match penalties are given when ref deems there was clear intent to injure. In this example, Rempe clearly knew he was going to be making head first contact, the check was avoidable, but he laid him out anyway, so can be viewed as intent to injure. Same with the sucker punch to siegenthaler. Its always an ejection (never just 10 min), always have a 5 min major penalty attached to them, and always result in league review for possible fine/suspension (misconducts don't require post game review) So in short, misconduct is for being a dick and sometimes only effects the player, not the team as a whole. Match is intent to injure and comes with an automatic 5 min major

Bastian needs to keep his head up better for his own safety, but the head was down, Rempe knew it and didn't do enough to avoid making head contact. Easy suspension, albeit a short one. I mean, he hit him with enough force to snap his stick in two before the contact was made, and even somebody 5'8 was going to hit Bastian in the head considering how far down his head was.

Love how I see a lot of people thinking he was gonna be suspended yet he not only played in the game against the Flyers, but he got his first goal! I think the point here is intent. Yes he got a match penalty and only spent about 13 seconds on the ice in this game against the Devils. But that was his only punishment because he wasn’t trying to hit Bastian in the head. You can see that the hit just got away from both players. There’s something else as well. This rivalry between these two teams is so old, so inherited, things like this are bound to happen when these teams meet up. This was the most violent and aggressive I’ve seen the Rangers play all season. This is honestly the way the Devils have always played and the Rangers just threw their own tactics against them and it worked in the best way. Would’ve been a shutout if Jackie Boy hadn’t scored with 2:07 left in the game 😡🤣 I’m glad we got Rempe, and Edstrom for that matter, because we needed aggressive tough players to be goons if we need them to be. Say what you want about Rempe, but the kid has been in 3 games so far, has had a fight in two of them, and hurt another player so bad he got ejected from the game. He’s making a name for himself and I hope there are players on other teams shakin in their skates at the prospect of facing him 🤣
