Did you know that they were based on the actual people who died on the ship? The husband was offered a seat next to his wife on the life boat but refused to go because there were still women and children on the ship so his wife refused her seat to stay with her husband and instead gave it to their maid. It's not sad, it happens often, people sometimes write perfection for others without knowing it, take Johnny Cash for example, his cover of Hurt is far more well known and popular then the original songwriters Nine Inch Nails. But the band conceded in saying that his version made that song what it was, and they could no longer claim it. Those who will appreciate the original song still exist and too this day it's streamed more than the cover, just the video on KZread has less :)

This is sad because he made this song, but it seems he's just a stepping stone for someone to get famous. He deserves more love and appreciation!!

I feel like this would be a good song to play at that climactic moment in a film, right before a big explosion goes off, and everything slows down, and the cute moments the main character experienced earlier flash in warmer tones until the final seconds. I heard the cover first and now I’ve found the original. I know everybody’s comparing but Sarah of course sang it well but Matt, boy I watched this video with my jaw dropped the whole time. He exuded so much emotion through his voice and lyrics and the video is spectacular. So imo I prefer Matt’s. I just was floored. Not taking away from Sarah she has a beautiful voice. It’s just the level of emotion I get from Matt which is astounding.

I JUST discovered this. It made my feel so much love deep in my heart for my wife and kids as i realized if it was all ending, I'd want to be nowhere else than hugging them to me. I've been going through a lot for a while now, and that feeling hit so HARD. I wasn't ready, man! What an amazing piece of music.

It's sad to see that the cover has more views than the original. Matt deserves more 😔

I see no comments about the music video like ??????????? Dude the video is so sad and yet so beautiful at the same time, people finally accepting their end and leave this world in peace together ! The producer is a genius for this one

5 years ago when my loved one passed away, this song was with me. Felt like the world was burning. I was sitiing on my backyard's grass in the heavy rain. Everything felt really heavy , so as the rain. After these years , its still with me at my lowest point. Thankyou so much Matt Maltese.

The song itself doesn’t bring me to tears. But the imagery of them holding each other lovingly as they paint their tombstone? As they crawl into a casket together, embracing each other all the while? That fucking got me.

Just saying I have a lot of free time, ENJOY THE ENDING SCENE OF A MOVIE (that I made up now) [TW: suicide and self harm] Now, think of this: 5 characters, 4 scenes. A dancer making her final presentation having to smile. A couple sitting in a roof top joking around while both looking tense but trying to hide that. One teenager looking out of their window in a 10 floor building, the sky is pinkish and is very polluted, out of the building is a very busy city with people stealing food and objects. Another teenager hiding in their bathtub holding a knife and looking at it curiously. The scenes changes with the song. As the chorus come, the couple are now drinking something, the dancer does not pretend to smile anymore, the person is the window leaves the window and the teenager in the bathroom looks in the mirror. As soon as the chorus ends, a scene of the couple painting each other’s face laughing, cuts to the teenager is the bathroom having bloody hands and their sleeves completely soaked of blood. The person in the window has scissors. The chorus starts and when the part saying “the earth runs to the ground” the dancer takes her final bow, the couple tilt their heads to each other, the person is the bathtub hugs their knee and the person jumps out of the window. The next scenes are the dancer leaving the theater and going to the beach, where she throws her pointe shoes in the water and lays down in the sand. The person is the bathtub collides as the bathtub is filling with water mixed with red. The person finally reached the floor and you can see a glimpse of the dancer on the background, as people pass through the dead body not caring about it, even stepping on it. The couple looks at themselves and smiles as a bomb explodes in the background

Why is the original so underrated? This version really gives you that hopeless feeling which is amazing.

I went from hearing the cover and loving it to hearing the original and loving it ten times more! And now I'm in absolute awe of the music video!!!

I’ve been feeling so trapped in my own mind recently and lost. This evening I looked out my window and saw a pretty sunset. Without hesitation I got out of bed and started running. I ran up a huge hill, got to the middle of a field where there were no people or houses. This song came on, and everything was perfect. I lay down in the grass and took in that sunset, it seemed unreal..... I literally have never felt the free after sprinting up that hill and throwing myself down on the grass. I felt so happy and free in that moment it was so perfect, almost too perfect. In the moment I realised everything happens for a reason and this song and that sunset didn’t happnen by chance, it happened when I needed it most and I sobbed my heart out alone on that hill.

i personally prefer this version. don’t get me wrong, sarah’s cover is nice as her voice is amazingly powerful, but the emotions are captured more subtly in a greater, raw depth in this one. matt’s tone and slight accent also gives an old type of feeling that makes it more resonating and beautiful. tbh matt really deserves more recognition and love, his song is all over tiktok yet he isn’t getting as much recognition as the cover and it’s sad.

i'm reading all these comments complementing the absolutely AMAZING song (have it on repeat all the time), but i don't see as many people talking about the video itself. it captures the essence of the song perfectly by showing a couple going through the acceptance the song portrays. INSANE STUFF!!

Please dear God, somebody put this man on a movie soundtrack. You sir, have beautiful way of creating a whole environment and evoking it through your music. Incredible and inspiring story telling.

Although this could be a social commentary on our world right now which would be wonderful, I also think it could describe a relationship that’s dying, and the two partners know it’s going to end soon but pretend everything is ok anyway. They act like they love each other and try desperately to keep alive a flame that they know already went out, and I think it’s a very powerful message especially since you can imagine the agony of losing hope in a once perfect relationship, and having to just watch it fall apart from the inside. I love the way Matt uses metaphors of death to describe love, as it can bring so much emotion into a piece. It’s so real sometimes it can be hard to listen to, which i think is very important; I love music that can challenge oneself.

I think this song is actually the opposite. It's about loving someone unconditionally even in the worst of times "oh girl its you that I lie with,... etc... as the world caves in" the end it shows them together going into a casket, they're dying together.

This is the best song that has ever been written. It is magnificent.

I don't hate Sarah's version, in fact I think it's amazing. I'm just sad that it has literally more than 10x the amount of views than the original, which in my opinion, I love so much more. He deserves so much more for this amazing piece.
