Matisyahu Sharing His Life Story

For more jewish videos visit www.zingmit.com "Your #1 Online source for all your Jewish entertainment!"
Matisyahu was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania as Matthew Miller; his family eventually settled in White Plains, New York. He also has a younger sister named Julie.
He was brought up a Reconstructionist Jew, and attended Hebrew school at Bet Am Shalom, a synagogue located in White Plains. He performed for over a year under the alias MC Truth in Bend, Oregon's Soulfori band. He spent some time as a young man as a self-professed "Phish-head," taking hallucinogens and following the rock band Phish on tour.
In 1996, Matisyahu took part in a semester-long program that offers students first-hand exploration of Jewish heritage at the Alexander Muss High School in Hod Hasharon, Israel. His experiences there significantly affected his feelings towards Judaism eventually leading to his decision to adopt Orthodox Judaism, becoming a Baal Teshuva around 2001. Initially he found his way to the Carlebach Shul on the West Side of Manhattan. Matisyahu then found his way to Chabad of Washington Square. He finished high school at a wilderness program in Bend, Oregon. Matisyahu then began playing with the Jewish band Pey Dalid.
From 2001 through July 2007, Matisyahu was affiliated with the Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic community in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York. However, as of July 17, 2007, he told the Miami New Times in an interview that he no longer "necessarily" identifies with the Lubavitch movement. In the interview, he stated that "...the more I'm learning about other types of Jews, I don't want to exclude myself. I felt boxed in. "Additionally, in the fall of 2007, while on a family vacation spent primarily in Jerusalem's Nachlaot neighborhood, he expressed interest in another Hasidic sect, that of Karlin. As of November 2007 he has confirmed a preference to pray at the Karliner synagogue in Boro Park where the custom is to ecstatically scream prayers; however he continues to reside in Crown Heights because of his wife's affinity for the community.
Soon after his adoption of hasidism, Matisyahu began studying Torah at Hadar Hatorah, a yeshiva for returnees to Judaism where he wrote and recorded his first album. He counts Bob Marley, Phish, God Street Wine and Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach among his musical inspirations and gives credit to Rabbi Simon Jacobson's book Toward a Meaningful Life for the lyrical inspiration to Youth's title track. As part of his faith, he does not perform in concert on Friday nights in observance of the Jewish Sabbath. An exception to this occurred at a 2007 concert in Fairbanks, Alaska, which was allowed because the sun didn't set until 2:00 a.m.
Matisyahu's wife's name is Tahlia; They have two sons. As of late 2010, Matisyahu and his wife are vegans.

His music was a light for me in my darkest hours. Music has always been healing for me . To find those songs that course through your veins . His songs resonated with me and uplifted me and lifted me out of that dark place . I wish I could tell him how grateful I am for what he does .

When I first heard king without a crown it was on a mash up cd of SoCal radio station x103.9 summer hits I was given for free at an event. I was probably about middle school age 6th or 7th grade and even tho I didn’t understand the lyrics the song just transcended me and I played it on repeat constantly, I am now 27 years of age and am not religious in anyway but find so much peace and tranquility in this mans music. It just shows that despite having differing faiths, opinions, idealism we can all still connect to one another and that is a powerful thing, and something the world today needs to take step back and realize🙏🏻

actually I am complicated too... I Greek Orthodox but I do not know many things about religion... i think all these religions are interrelated. I really wonder if a Greek or Russian or Jew saying they are Orthodox they probably mean something different? But for sure I Know that we are all coming from Abraham.. one more thing I feel but I do not know why, is that the language I feel interesting to listen and in music is Hebrew... not sure if there is anything in common to Greek but I really find this language so familiar to me somehow!!!!

As someone who's been involved with christianity for 20 years (ex christian, more of an agnostic right now), I can say that there's a weird sort of tension between Jews and Christians. All this over a lot of theological differences. A lot of christians see Jews as a lost/estranged family because they refuse to believe that Jesus is the son of God. And from the christian side there's a lot of resentment and heartache because of that.

I'm Catholic born and raised. Getting older I've only grown deeper in my faith and more spiritual continuing my journey with God through out my life. I will always respect Matisyahu and his beliefs in Judaism. Remember Jesus was born Jewish. Most the prophets and saints were Jewish. The blessed Mary is also Jewish. What Jesus represents, what he did is where Judaism and Catholicism separate. Catholics shouldn't judge anyone, we accept and pray for God's love and mercy through Jesus Christ his son our savior.

However i have my criticism on any strict life style, there is a lot of beauty and soul work in that community. The problems arise when you do not fit in...however we must keep an open mind and then there is a lot to learn from the orthodox .

I so envy people who are capable of having a faith of any kind. I love his music. So much. I wish I was capable of any kind of faith, but I'm not.

Ask God to make Himself known to you. I suggest reading the bible. Start in the new testament in the book of John. If you are truly wanting to know who God is, the good news is He makes Himself available to anyone who asks. So be ready when you really mean it. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. You won't ever regret asking Him to come into your life. God bless.

we are all equal, human creations of god. vicegerent on earth. created with a purpose. different religions, races and cultures is not a reason to hate and despise one another. I islam. although historians say 3 of heaven religion Christianity, Islam and the Jews were often at loggerheads, the fact we are all there is only one god one religion. I hope one day we will all be united.

@madrush1193 i'm not saying that he does or that he will. i've just noticed that he's relinquishing some of the trappings of fanaticism and it makes me wonder if he will continue to reject the religion layer by layer. i have no idea if he will or if he won't. but sometimes when people "find" religion, they ultimately go ahead and "lose" it, move on to the next panacea or some such thing...

@colbeseder1 here's some food for thought, in terms of how jewish people today feel about the religion they inherited: 50% of jewish people today are agnostic / atheist 10% are orthodox / ultra-orthodox 40% are somewhere in between. most people, thankfully, are not inclined toward blind fanaticism, esp. when what they are supposed to be so fanatical about are tales as barbaric as those told in the document know as the torah... ok, i've said more than enough. good luck.

@Devismo As an atheist who comes from a jewish and christian family, I have found that neither are bad. Science is the way to go, but hating on a religion is a terrible way to go about science. It is just putting more hate on atheists and scientists that we don't need if we want people to hear the truth.

@colbeseder1 1) ok, i'm going to waste a little time with a response here: yes, it's a cult much like any other organized or "unorganized" (i.e. small or new) religion, but it's a pretty extreme one. as far as being the "real" cult, - not exactly. if you read the torah you'll have a clear understanding, that according to the writers (cont)
