I remember seeing this movie as a child and just being in awe at the world and I couldn't wait to experience the joys of life, only to get older and realise it's mostly responsibilities and trying to find inner peace.

yeah, it is so strange that as kids we think that life is going to be easier since we would be old enough to get things done but no. The older we get the more responsibilities pile up and life becomes kinda different and difficult. And it becomes important to not only look for your regular health but mental health as well since that starts to become a thing too. I just finished my studies and will start my first job in about a month, so I can feel that "funtime" is slowly ending. At the same time I would like to use it as a chance to constantly improve myself, becoming a better man, a better boyfriend and maybe one day a good husband and dad.

The real mystery that I’ve been questioning till this day is how the hell did Matilda even survive with those monsters. Child neglected services are screaming for this girl. I know is just a movie but to think there are children like her in the world who probably have it worse than she does makes me sick. When the narrator: Danny De Vito/ Mr. Wormbook said by the time she was two, she learn what most people learned in the in their early thirties how to take care of themselves hits hard because I’m thirty and I’m still learning. So if there are children out there who knows more than grownups is very impressive🌷

You know when I first saw this movie as a kid I thought the only way to make my parents happy was to be smart and get high marks in school. I was always at a disadvantage when it came to schoolwork especially math. College was a nightmare for me. My dad had liver failure during the first semester of my first year of community college and a transplant. Then when I got into a university he died during the fall break. The trauma made my grades go down and by the end of the spring semester I was kicked out because of that. Now here I am trying college again. Community college sure but still working hard to get a job. My mom was so happy I made such a big choice like that on my own and I hope my dad would be happy too.

Spoilers Belle is really Matilda's great great great grandmother. She wrote many books that were passed down throughout the family. Over the generations the books were divided up amongst the heirs of each generation until Matilda's mother possessed only 1 remaining book. A children's book written by Belle about a little girl named Matilda, who went on a great adventure to find a magic library with books that told her endless stories. Matilda's mother loved the book as a young girl, and in a moment of epidural induced clarity that she really was a shitty person, but wanted her daughter to be better than her. So she decided to name her daughter after the protagonist. Harry who is disappointed that Matilda is a girl, doesn't care what the child's name is. Matilda stumbles upon the book tucked away in the attic at age 3, her first real book. The magazines haven't held her interest, too many fake looking people with plastered on smiles; but this book, this beautiful book, with it's pictures still vibrant in color, the calligraphy so beautiful. This book calls to her very soul. She sees her name on the cover "Matilda's Library" and she knows she must learn to read. Great great Grandmother's words echo through her mind, introducing her to the idea of a "Library", inspiring Matilda to go out into the world in search of this magical place.

You know, I appreciate characters or even real people that love to read! As an avid book reader myself, it inspires me! I couldn't appreciate this stuff when I was younger for I didn't care much about reading, but now have read dozens of old literature books like: little women, great expectations (one of my favorites), tale of two cities, how to kill a mocking bird, and much more! I really appreciate characters that love to read-- because not only does it convey that they're smart, but also that they're calm and focused, the PERFECT attributes for a protagonist character! Although super obvious, the protagonist character is the one that is discovering new information and making decisions based on their internal and external motives! And the fact that Matilda's goal at the beginning is to find a book, therefore, search for a library to get that book, only to start reading more books, in which strikes up a personal want of a friend and more knowledge is freaking genius! Personally to me, I think having a character that loves to read just sets up soooo much perfect scenes and character development for your movies! But best of all, these attributes of Matilda makes her the textbook definition of an active protagonist! :D

The real mystery that I have been questioning till this day is how the hell did Matilda even survive with those monsters? Child neglected services are screaming for this girl. I know it's just a movie, but to think that there are children like her in the world who probably have it worse than her makes me sick. When the narrator said that by the time she was two, she learned what most people learned in their early 30s, how to take care of herself, it hits hard because I am 30 and I'm still learning. So, if there are children out there who knows more than grown ups, then that's very impressive.

Unfortunately the treatment Matilda endured is pretty common. It generally is allowed because adult DON'T say anything. Take the librarian for example. Yes she is kind to Matilda, but she sees this girl walk in alone for weeks, spending all day there, and she has interacted with Matilda enough to know that she walks to/from the library each day. She doesn't call CPS, the police, or anyone. When Matilda suddenly "disappears" bc she went to school. The librarian doesn't call 911. Thousands of children are murdered by their parents/caregivers, and hiding the evidence when no one is noticing a kid missing anyway, is sadly very easy. I'm not saying the librarian is evil, neglectful or anything else, in fact she's human. She did what so many adults do when they see a kid being mistreated, they look the other way (especially in the 80's-90's when this took place). The adults don't want to rock the boat, pry, and are afraid of what worse fate awaits a child in the foster care disaster. Kids who are way too mature for their age are often victims of neglect and abuse. They've learned that adults can't be trusted so they rely on themselves. So if you interact with a child who acts a bit too much like Matilda know that your one call could make all the difference.

@@millersam07 Yeah, I know. And Matilda's parents don't like it when she reads books. Most parents don't like it when their children spend a lot of time playing games and watching TV. But in this movie, it's the opposite. Matilda's parents don't like it when she reads books, but they like it when she watches TV. Books give you knowledge and help you to improve your speaking or improve your language. That's why it's good to read books. I am not a bookworm like Matilda, but I read books that interest me. But don't worry. Such parents like Matilda's parents are very rare people. Such people may not come in your life.

@@londonofficeuser I get what you're saying but I'm going to disagree heavily on parents like Matilda's not being common. I've worked in child services, and my own parents were closer to the wormwood's than one would like to admit, though I never had superpowers. After over a decade of working with parents and children from a variety of social/economic, ethnic and generational backgrounds, it's clear that the wormwood's aren't that rare, and don't even rank that bad when compared to some of the monsters I've seen. If you can't imagine your own family treating you so poorly then count yourself among the extremely lucky ones. Most parents don't outright try to kill their children, but at least half of them don't really care or want the kid. They had the child out of obligation, selfish desire, bad circumstances, or truly did have an initial desire before conception, but the reality set in, and very few "rise to the challenge".

@@millersam07 No, that's false. I have seen that many parents are loving their children and taking care of them, including my parents. The wormwoods are a bit rare. Trust me, most parents are loving and caring to their children. Only some very evil and bad parents don't want the child. However, this is rare. The reason why some parents don't want children is because children are troubling them a lot, children are wasting their money and are not listening to them, etc. In some cases, it's the children's fault, but not always.

For all of this time, I came to the strong conclusion that Matilda was actually adopted by Harry and Zinnia, which would make sense, because Matilda was nothing like her family, and it would make you imagine who her real parents would be, but it's possible that this place where she was staying as a newborn was just a hospital where she was born from Zinnia. It could be a wrong assumption that this hospital was an adoption agency, but it's possible, because Matilda really had nothing in common with her biological family. When I knew that Matilda had the adoption papers in the end, I supposed that these papers were blank release forms that her parents had kept and were taken secretly from Matilda, which proves by form that Matilda was actually adopted in the first place, but it's obvious now that Matilda acquired these forms herself when she felt the need to leave her parents. There are two ways to this theory, and this is a question that you'll have to answer yourself. Was Matilda born and raised by her own biological parents, or was she adopted?

The "Matilda learned what most people learn by their 30s to take care of herself" line always confused me for a couple of reasons. Like, don't most people truly learn how to care for themselves in their mid-to-late 20s, when they finish college or trade school and get out into the real world? By their early 30s, people have already figured out how to "adult" for lack of a better term. And even then, I doubt Matilda was caring for herself to the extent that adults are. Sure, she was dressing herself and preparing her own meals, but it's not like she was doing taxes or choosing a health insurance plan. You know, the kind of stuff that people in their mid-20s are learning how to do for the first time when they're truly learning to care for themselves. The kind of stuff she was doing was advanced for her age, but was the kind of thing a lot of people learn in their teens or early twenties (or earlier - ten year olds can dress themselves for example) if they're not incredibly sheltered.

I have seen this movie so many times and have only just noticed some of the books in Matilda's trolley. There's "The Pickwick Papers", a book of Shakespeare's Sonnets, and For Whom The Bell Tolls. Hate Michael so much at 8:04.
