Many thanks to Lama Jamyang Tundup of Matho for explaining the details of the festival to me. The video just wouldn't be the same without his narration.

    I have always been fascinated by the Cham dances, they so colorful and unlike anything I have ever seen. Always wondered about the different masks worn by the dancers, thanks for the info. Enjoyed it, the oracles are really intriguing, hope I get to witness it someday... Thank you Saravana.

    Each mask represent different god, goddess, spirit whose main task is the protection of the teaching (of Buddha). Most of them are malevolent spirits (Bon - a native religion of Tibet before Buddhism came in 8AD) who lived in Tibet before Buddhism came to Tibet. Indian Tantric Master Padma Sambhava in 8AD was invited in Tibet to subdue to spirit on the urging of Shantha Raksita an abbot of Nalanda university who was preaching/introducing Buddhism in Tibet for the time on the request of Tibetan King. Shantha Rakshita faced challenges from the malevolent spirit. So both Shantha Rakistita and Guru Padma Sambhava are regarded as the co-founder of Buddhism in Tibet, which is popularly known as Tibetan Buddhism or Vajrayana. Padma Sambhava subdued all the spirit through his Tantric power and made them into the protector of Dharma (Buddhism).

  • @indiainmotion

    @indiainmotion

    I was in Matho for 5 days and saw the Lhas 4 times. The first 3 days they came in their regular human form and the 4'th and last day they came in their Nagrang form. I was under the impression that the Nagrang form will be very similar to the previous days, just the bodies painted black. But they had transformed into something more primitive, more wild. There was an electric atmosphere in the place whenever they were around. Everything from their movements to the sounds they made were all so primitive, it was as if I was transported back in time and was witnessing the ceremony in their original form hundreds of years back.

  • @anshika6947

    @@indiainmotion wow.. It's just so vibrant to hear that... This kind of vibe comes within everyone when there are some ceremonies related to supreme powers going around like the one in Mandi Shivratri fair when the Devtas come around and then the people accompanying him play those large musical instruments. The sound of those instruments is so divine, one just get lost within God.
