It is not important you can take any. But make sure that Angles formed by the various objects are desirable ( 30 45 60 )

Clinometer is little up! So the bottom laser light tells how much the error is! If you try to remove the gap below the clino you wouldn’t able to fix the pencils.

You can tie a thread and extend it to the respective heights like on the top of the tree But using lazer is better option One may raise the question on using thread that how would you reach pole to tie a thread and if you have reached there why you don't go for the direct measurements using tape scale
