had to take a math eval exam for college sincr I'd taken a gap year, and in12th grade I never did math. I knew calculus. bombed that test, only knew how to take derivatives and such, couldn't even divide fractions or the other simple jazz.

I remember i failed algebra and trigonometry twice while i had highest math score on calculus 3 at that time i was still preparing for algebra retake exam. Thanks for mentioning 3blue1brown he is jesus of mathematics.

me casually a difficult exam where we had to find points on a plane through pretty extensive mathematics, getting the right answer, but then when I rewrite it to use in the next section I just flip the x and y for some reason and continue with the wrong answer

As someone taking graduate math classes, I disagree. Oftentimes we cannot find a simpler solution to a problem until after we find a harder solution to build up intuition. The way you learn math in school is very very different to the math research process. You see and learn the refined and nice looking maths that come out of hundreds of years of people polishing proofs that were ugly the first time around.

You need my problem, "Can't pass Calculus class because lacking Algebra skilz". Also I have forgotten how to do fractions properly. I think the only way to fix both problems is just practice. Speaking of practice, one of the things I regret not doing is my homework when I was K-12. Never saw the purpose of it. Now I do. It's to help reinforce what I learned into my brains memory.
