    I agree! Purdue's Math Dept still uses his 'Linear Algebra & Its Applications' text for MA 511, which I took for MSECE then (Signal Processing, of course).

    This guy's linear algebra videos helped me such that I only missed one problem out of 30 on my linear algebra final. It helped alot!

    He seems extremely chill in all of his recordings. Also its nice that he isnt stuck on the whole pure math applied math culture war. I would like to think most mathmeticians are not. But the few ive met at you definitely are. Small sample size though.

    No he is talking about block transform coding artifacts. The uncompressed image is divided into blocks before transformation into the frequency domain; these blocks are individually transformed (using a cosine transform for old-style jpeg). The edges of each block in the spacial-domain compressed image are often visible as discontinuities in the image: these are the 'blocking' artifacts mentioned in the video.

    Notice how while he is explaining what a signal is, he is giving us an example too by giving signals with his left eye.
