I always recommend for everyone to wear a mask and gloves to protect yourself during this process. Great tutorial Rich.

Hey Jeff, yes its pretty simple I think. Its a little different for different feathers but this should work on most material. Not just feathers

Nice video instructions Rich. Have you ever used citric acid from the grocery baking isle? Works pretty well. I add it to the water first since the acid seems to heat up the water faster. I also use scrub chicken feathers for my test feathers. Keep up the great videos!

I havent needed to use any citric acid from the store yet. I'll be using it next time I dye. I had bought the jaquards dye kit that came with the bag of citric acid. I always soak my feathers in hot soapy water for 6 or 8 hours and then wash each one by hand. Then I will put them in the dye bath. Soaking they seam to take dye better.

Really informative video. Can’t tell you how many feathers I’ve ruined trying to dye them. Did you first bleach the cinnamon tip tail feathers before dying them or did you get them like that? I would love to see a color bleaching video as well If you could.

I bought the cinnamon tail feathers like that. They are a.very light cinnamon. When dying other colors it leaves a nice dirty vintage kind of look. Sorry to say I have never bleached feathers before. I have a lung disease and have to be very careful with the dyes. Bleaching requires ammonia which is very bad for my lungs so unfortunately it's not something I will be able to do or make a video of.

@@flytyingwithrichlamonte yes sorry. I forgot about the ammonia. For that reason, I’m gonna stick with buying bleached feathers.

I usually dye at 140 degrees Fahrenheit. How did you come up with that water temp? I had trouble dyeing swan it might have been the problem!

The instructions that came with my dyes all said to heat to 180°. Jaquard, moonlight and Venairds all said to heat to 180°.
