MATCHBOX Restoration No 38c Honda Motorcycle and Trailer 1967
This upload was a day late. I ran out of time to finish my voice over and then the next day my microphone failed! I got there in the end and , hopefully, as the saying goes, "Good things are worth waiting for!".
This is a 'two for one' video in that this combination included two models so I could not do one without the other. Both models had damage to repair and needed repainting. The Trailer also needed some new decals. There are a few new ideas presented in this video and also an experiment to see if Bronze wool burns like Steel wool.
I had great fun doing this makeover and I am very pleased with the overall end product. I hope you enjoy it! Marty.

Green flame comes from copper in the wool. Copper atoms get excited and when they return to ground state, they emmit the green light

Man ya beat me to it. Yep coppers your culprit! Part of the alloy. 37% Zinc, 63% copper ish depending on what type of brass. Bronze is typically 88% copper 12% zinc

This is the channel. This is my go-to channel for sheer relaxation and for getting "re-centered". I can't explain it, but it just works.
In only three weeks I've gone from not knowing anything about the existence of Matchbox model restorations to wondering where this week's MMM video is. That alone speaks volumes to what you're doing and the quality of your productions, Marty. Thanks for all you do!
Congrats to you and your wife Julie for the great work!
Super great repair on the trailer. Nice decals and kickstand. Another super restoration/build. With all the detail on the bike I might try a custom on one of mine. Thanks
"Goes off like a frog in a sock", is my new favorite saying. Thanks Marty, another good restoration.Cheers from over the ditch

Great video Marty! when I was young there was no money for fireworks so we use to grab a steel wool tie it to a rope, set it on fire and throw it in the air like a lazo. Great times!
Great to see you added the kick stand. Bit off scale with the pull car,but very nice job bringing the bike and trailer back to life
A washer for grinding the nub of the axle is overkill. If you're REALLY worried about accidentally hitting the wheel, just throw a square of painters tape over it, and let the axle poke through.

That looks sweet, Marty ! I actually like the fact you didn't paint the bike motor. It makes it look "Matchbox original". You're a true artist ! May the good Lord bless you today !
My goodness. The instant flashback to my bedroom as a little guy playing with this toy was absolutely fantastic. I hadn’t seen or thought about the little Honda cafe bike in close to 50 years. Thanks so much.

Green flame would be from the copper in the brass.
@RichardRenes
5 жыл бұрын
Yes, some metals will color flames. Copper (green) Barium (even brighter green), sodium (yellowish orange), Strontium (red), Bismuth (blue) and Magnesium or aluminium (bright white sparks) and Potassium (violet). These same metals are also used for coloring fireworks.
@zulumax1

Bronze? Copper + Tin. Brass is softer Copper + Zinc. Both should produce green flame. Brass is more resistant to corrosion which is why it is used as bright work on sea going ships.

Me too Jarrod. Especially this morning when my regular Mic packed in!!! - I thought it was my sound card but I plugged in a new wireless mic that I have got for my unboxings and luckily it worked as required!
This had to be one of the toughest you've done. Very creative. Never even knew there was a center stand on that bike originally!
That little story at the end sounded like some personal experience! What a great lass you’ve got in Julie too! Not only donating her toothbrush, makeup brushes, those pad things etc, she now is your tyre shop too! Hope you took her out for a slap up treat!

With as much as you know about Matchbox models and how to restore them, have you ever thought of opening up a fix-it shop? I know it's a lot of work, but you seem to know more than anyone about restoring models. I am very deeply impressed with your work.

I guess he wanted to keep it as close to original as possible. In the before restoration pictures, you can see the whole bike was painted. I thought it'd be neat if he left the engine in bare metal but I can understand why he didn't.
Brilliant video Marty. But I do think you could have done some more paint work on the engine

Matchbox did another later Honda bike with a separate chrome-plastic engine. It was done as a racer and as a police bike.
Great result, Marty! I am also restoring this model and I removed the wheels prior to painting. They are not as fragile as you might believe. The forks are robust, front and back. I had to repair one of the wheels where the spikes had detached from the rim. Even the tyres came up a treat. Getting the axles back in again is tricky. I used other longer axles to get the mushroom heads peened again. It’s important for other folks inspired by your work to understand that even models that appear completely beyond help can still supply much needed spare parts. Thanks Marty!
Brilliant restoration Marty.....The Honda bike and trailer is such an iconic Matchbox model and a must have for any collection.
And you should really look into an SLA a.k.a. a resin printer. For the types of things you're printing, detail is king, and that's SLA's claim to fame.
