MATCHBOX Restoration 73a 10 Ton Pressure Refueller 1959

A small, rather insignificant model of an old RAF tanker. Not much to see at first but slowly it becomes a highly desirable miniature truck. The unique blue/grey colour is somewhat drab but with the addition of a red, white and blue RAF roundel on the top and a silver front bumper bar this little beauty takes on a look of it's own.
All in all it was worth the effort to have another forgotten model restored for my collection.

Moin (G'day) from the North Sea shore. Well... I have to say, NO restoration is "boring".... 😜 Each one is a challenge and the Tanker Truck is a beautiful model. (8:01 - 8:10) That's what I like about the MBs.... That abundance of detail 🤩 I saw this three-axle truck "live" once. When I was a truckie, I once delivered a load to the RAF. There was a truck like this in the yard of this airfield. (Perfectly restored) Somehow your model reminds me of that day 😉 (It's just as excellently restored). Marty, I'm thrilled, clearly both thumbs up for this 👍🏼 👍🏼 Thank you so much for sharing 🙏🏼 (and the memories of my truckie days) To you, Julie and all the team behind the scene have another bonza week and stay safe and sound. Keep up the good work, mate 😁 Greetings from the DCcoB at the lighthouse end of the Elbe River. 😎👍🏼🇦🇺🍻🇩🇪👍🏼🤠 (P.S. Shoutout to Australia's most koalafied ambassador, KEVIN 🐨)

Always great to get a new video from you, Marty! Personally, I don't find this RAF Tanker to be boring at all. Quite the opposite, actually. There's not a lot too it as it's an early model, but that's also a great deal of the charm of it too! I didn't know that the black wheels version was worth so much! I have a gray, plastic wheels version just like this one, but now I'll keep my eyes peeled for one with black wheels!

I Remember convoys of these in and around Oxfordshire when there were still many RAF airfields.....Also, don't know if it is still SECRET, but at the side of certain roads in 'The Cotswolds' were, Pumping stations, where a huge aviation fuel pipeline ran underground between the RAF bases. At these pumping stations tankers like these would line up and be filled or unloaded.....I think they had a top speed of barely 40 Mph....the convoys were very slow. It's a Leyland Hippo by the way......Some had the civilian Cab, some had a military cab that could be split for transport, in the old transport planes we had back in the late 40's early 50's to the 60's........these trucks did very little miles and were in service for a long time...they were only changed because their capacity was too small for modern usage. The truck tank your have carried aviation fuel, jet fuel and in those days, maybe some high grade petrol....the Layland hippo had a Diesel engine, really old school diesel, in truth it would have run on the Aviation fuel, but it was better on Diesel, so the Jerry cans would have been for the truck itself, all British military trucks have in the past had Jerry can holders for extra fuel and range.😀

I have never played with the original matchbox cars but i did spend a good time playing with little cars similar to the tesla one BUT those had a weird metal body (idk which metal) and a weak plastic base. The wheels were made of plastic and axles from metal. Those cars were significantly smaller than the tesla ones, but were darn smooth. One of the cars i had was a race car and i kid you not- it was LIGHTNING SPEED. I always loved the "tin" cars, as you said they had that strudy feel to them.

It is your work along with your narration backed by that wonderful music that is very nostalgic for earlier times & posts. I love the subject matter of RAF refueling truck. Love your yard & surroundings also. I got crows, ravens & blue jays around here. Restaurant Portion Cups are what you are putting paint in. What they are called here in Maine. I like the Poly Strip the best. No splotchy crap. You could just attach shelf brackets to that diorama & mount it on the wall. Very nice by the way. An odd surprise.

I've been watching your makeovers for a couple years now, and it's great to see how you're constantly thinking how to come up with new techniques for a more accurate restoration. With regard to a couple of the comment you made about features on the tanker truck, the two hose connections may be 1 outlet hose, and a return line in case of overfill of the airplane tank. The 5-gallon jerrycan may be used to recharge the pump in case it loses its prime. Just my two cents as an engineer of what those features might be for.

Once the caustic soda solution has cooled down to ca 40C, you can toss the wheels - and if applicable - other plastic parts in it. This works especially well, if there is paint on them. This will save you a lot of hassle with soapy water and brushes and you'll never need to mess about with brake fluid again.

But this looked lovely from the get go and you left it in wonderful shape. Fascinating the view and opinion on a current Matchbox model. Doesn't surprise me it's disappointing. But I'm left wondering if someone 50 years from now will be restoring a 2023 Tesla Matchbox model and highlighting their 3d printing capability and decal production means.
