    It's not just the pace of the game that was better, it's the pace of the highlights. It's hard to quite pin down why I prefer this style but it feels more like you're watching the game. Modern highlights just show the top chances in a match and it often feels less representative of the pattern of play on the day.

  • @brianduru3753

    @brianduru3753

    Because there were more highlights then. Everybody took shots back then and half of them were dumb shots that didn't go anywhere but they still made it into the highlights. Today, teams are more deliberate about chance creation. That means they only shoot when relatively certain. So less shots means less highlights and when you do get a chance, it tends to be high quality.

  • @kjaamor2057

    @@brianduru3753 I feel like there's truth in what you're saying even if it isn't 100% accurate. I don't know that it's about "dumb shots" but I agree that attacks are more deliberate and there is certainly a far greater emphasis on ball retention in the modern game. Here you can start the highlight with either team and it not be clear who will be the one shooting because of the end-to-end (and long ball) nature of the game.

    @@kjaamor2057 It's the trend though. This isn't even a new thing. Just check the highlights from a match from the 90s or 80s. The right back shooting from 30 yards and I'm thinking to myself 'is he stupid or something?' But that's just how it was back then. And in a way it was advantageous for them because goalkeeping technique was poorer back then and the pitches were worse so you could get the odd bobble or bounce. Today, teams don't shoot from range that much because in addition to it being inefficient, goalkeepers are just so much better and secure in their handling and the equipment is better (gloves and all). The midfield is also more packed these days as teams are more organised. The tactical discipline is much better and so the flair players are being squeezed out. All this amounts to a more structured and organised game and less frenetic end to end action like we used to see in the past.

    I'm a Man United fan but I am glad to see Newcastle playing well again. When we had the Carabao final, it said on the news, Newcastle has a population of 800,000 people and 100,000 fans went to London - that is insane support for your club! That means 1 in 8 people from Newcastle were either at the game or there in London supporting their team. I'd rather it was them that were good and getting in the top 4 than teams like Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs, Man City, Arsenal etc.

    Fascinating to watch this today. So many random collisions between players where play simply.... continues! A good example the Andy Cole chance at 20:58, where he and theDons keeper, Sullivan, have a light collision. The ball is cleared and the game goes on. Today in 2023, a goalkeeper in that situation would nearly always pretend to be injured and get the game stopped. Possibly the striker too. And there'd be a minute where nothing at all happened except people walking about, medical staff on, players moaning to the referee, etc. I watch quite a bit of older football (15+ years ago) on KZread and it's really noticeable how the game back then flowed.

    People mock the quality compared to today, but the pace of the game was far better back in the 90s/early 00s. Players didn't just hoof it, despite what some claim. There was some lovely neat football back then. Possession football and pressing is all well and good, but everything's been slowed down. As for the endless stoppages and time wasting, the ridiculous money involved, and the VAR nightmare, it's awful to imagine where our game will be in the next five to ten years.
