Mastic is sap from a tree and it’s so expensive because it only grows on the north side on an island called Chios (he-ous) in Greece. They have tried planting it in other places but it dose d grow the sap. me personally I like the flavor but it’s not for everyone. They have packs of gum with flavors added to it. It’s called elmas and I personally love it. Usually you don’t eat straight up mastic, it usually used in Cooking! My mom makes this really good new years bread called vasilopita, it’s so good. We eat it every year to symbolize great luck in the years to come. You drop a coin in the cake before you bake it and the person that gets it in their slice has good luck the coming year (usually my cousin gets it) The cool thing about this is that my family is from Chios and I get to see them every 2 years and it is so beautiful. I love it

Well here in Greece the country mastic gum is made we eat it or I eat it at least in a normal gum like shape and it tastes good the one you got is the one straight from the tree I believe

Greek person from Athens here, mastic gum is literally bark of the tree and it grows on the north side of chios. My family bought it and it really does lose flavor after 15-20 minutes. It costs 2 euros and 50 cents here in Athens although it is very expensive out of Greece due to the gum bring difficult to find and get. As for the taste and texture, it might keep tearing apart like crazy but if you manage to get it soft without raging it'll be fine. Also, I don't think it has a flavor at the point. It gets its flavor after a lot of chewing and nearly when it's taste is coming to an end

If you haven't found an answer yet, you can try looking for it in a local Greek shop (if there's any in your area). Alternatively try finding it online, idk which ones are trustable tho. A quick search tells me that apparently Walmart offers it (can be bought online), of the brands I see offered I can only recognise the dark yellow/orange coloured one with the Greek lettering, which is also sold in Greece. (If you don't have any Walmart where you live then maybe look at other shops' online catalogues). As to what to do with them (since it's unlikely that you're gonna want to chew a whole pack), they're most often used in baking (especially sweet breads or doughs of pies/pastries). The flavour of the resin alone will seem bitter but in a baked good it will be masked by the sugar, thus leaving a fresh smell and flavour (I can't describe it any better). Combines very well with spices like cardamom and mahlep. For use in baking, it will be needed to ground the resin, which can be done either with a mortar and pestle or wrap the resin in a clean towel/put it in a zip lock bag/anything similar and start hitting with a hammer (yes seriously)(be careful not to hit yourself or break anything of course). There's also mastic flavoured commercial gum, here I would recommend the brand ELMA. These ones can only be chewn. I hope you find this useful.
