    I am doing my research on this topic, and your video popped up! I was stuck between master’s in counseling vs psyd. Definitely not a PHD because I am not that passionate about the research component. Yet, you are 100% right in everything you’re saying. I think this is confirmation that I should just shoot for the psyd. I also want to teach in academia aside from just providing psychotherapy. Yes, there is a cost to pursuing this degree, but my gut is telling me to go for this. Luckily, there is two APA accredited Psyd programs in my area (Washington state). I apply this fall! Great video! :)

    Love your video! Do you recommend any resources for finding information on state-by-state restrictions for a master's degree in clinical psychology? I'm currently restricted by location for at least a few more years and looking into some competitive master's programs either in my area (Atlanta) or online! I also liked the advice you gave about a master's in social work or counseling as options instead! What about a master's of education in counseling?

    Hi! It sounds like you're already doing the work! Is your end goal to become a psychologist or a therapist? It might be helpful to check out some local facebook psychology groups and post your question there to see if you can gather information about state-by-state restriction guidelines from others who are pursuing clinical psychology. Something I also did for myself was contacted a lot of psychologists who were doing what I wanted to do in my career, many didn't respond lol but there were a few that got back to me and it was super helpful to learn what they did and their journey! I've heard that the masers of education in counseling is great if you want to work in education! To the best of my knowledge both the masters of art and masters of education in counseling can do the same thing in terms of therapy, psychotherapy, and counseling so I think it's more up to the individual what they'd like to specialize in, focus on, or work with in terms of the population they work with. I hope that helps!

    This was so incredibly helpful! For some reason it seems so difficult to find this sort of information just on google. I plan on practicing in NC, do you know where we can find more info about which states have which requirements? I am a mother of 2 and the M.A. in counseling sounds appealing for this reason, but I want to make sure I’m not wasting my time when I should be going after a PsyD instead. Thank you!

  • @philsguidetopsyd

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah that's a great question! If you plan to go to school in NC you can directly ask the school's you're interested in about the the scope of practice, certifications, and accreditation. NC should also have a general website I believe that lists all of their counseling/therapy licensure credentials. Once you know which graduate program provides what type of licensure, that might help you make a decision about the scope of practice that you can do as a counselor vs. what you can do as a PsyD. Hope that helps!

  • @philsguidetopsyd

    @philsguidetopsyd

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's awesome! Since you know what population you want to work with you could try and see if the masters program has clinical opportunities in those settings. That will give you the experience that you're looking for as you get your psyd, making it more likely that you could specialize in that area. Most specializations are based on whether or not you have the relevant experience. For example someone who wanted to be a pediatric psychologist would need to make sure their clinical practicum sites are based around helping mostly children. Then when they graduate from the program and are looking to specialize, it will be easier for them to either become board certified in pediatric psychology because they have the relevant experience working with that population or start private practice and market themselves with that specialization. Hope that helps, best of luck!

    Thank you so much for creating such informative content! It would really help if you could tell me what sort of masters degree would you recommend if I'm aiming to get into the Clinical psych doctorate program in two years. I'm currently in my undergrad and I'm an international student. Hence, to get more experience and make myself more eligible I want to pursue a masters degree before I apply to a doctorate program. Is it true that Clin psy Doctorate programs prefer students with a more research oriented background and if so, will it make sense if I do my masters in counselling considering its more practical in nature ?

    Hi! Great question. It really just depends on what type of Clinical psych doctorate programs you are interested in applying to? Many programs on their websites have what they are mainly focused on. Some might be more focused on research and some more on clinical practice. If you know what you want to do after getting your doctorate than you can pick the masters program that best aligns with your interests! I would suggest doing whatever makes you the best all-around applicant making sure you have a little bit of everything whether that's research experience or clinical experience to give you the best chance of getting into a program. Hope that helps good luck!

  • @philsguidetopsyd

    @philsguidetopsyd

    Great question!! I think the U.S. is unique in that a lot of schools do not require a masters degree in order to be accepted into a Ph.D. program. Especially if you have good grades from undergrad, and a good GRE score, you will be competitive. Actually, about 1/3 of my cohort came straight from undergrad. BUT it does depend also on the school. Even though a 1/3 of my cohort came from undergrad, also about another 1/3 has a master's degree. So I'm not sure if I would say they favor master's degrees, I think it's based on an individual basis of doing what you need to do to be the most competitive. I personally completed my master's degree because I didn't have a high GPA in undergrad, so I got a master's degree to prove that I was capable of doing well in a doctoral program. That situation was specific for me, likewise, applicants will have to determine what makes the most sense for them to be competitive. I hope that answers your question!

    Hi Maria, I'm not sure about the restrictions for the state of California for a masters in clinical psychologists. But I know the state has great counseling programs and masters of social work programs. Additionally, theoretically any PhD/PsyD program in the U.S. will accept students without a masters degree unless they specifically state that they require a masters degree on their website. So whichever school you are interested in, you can see what they require in their applications, if they don't require a masters (they would state it if they do) then you could apply to that program without a masters degree. You could also contact those schools via phone or email and ask them about if getting a masters is recommended in order to be accepted into their program. I hope that helps! All the best!

    Most likely, depends on the school but from what I know even with a masters most PsyD programs will require the full 4 years. In my cohort there are therapists as well as some who have masters in psychology and they are still required to complete the 4 years. However, there are certain classes that they have been able to audit and not take since they took the same courses in their program, so most schools will allow you to transfer some credits! Usually students who only want a doctorate will apply to a program that has both the masters and doctorate of clinical psychology in one program. That way it's easier to transfer credits, and you could save time too by not having to spend extra years or money on tuition. This seems to be the most time efficient and cost efficient option for those who just want to get their doctorate in clinical psychology. Looking into a PhD that is funded will also help with saving money. If you just want to get a masters and aren't sure about the doctorate a masters in counseling or social work provides good opportunities for people to become licensed therapists after their schooling. They can work for several years, save up some money, get rid of student loan debt, and then decide if it's necessary for themselves to pursue a doctorate. Hope that helps, best of luck.

    Many states now require 3 year master’s programs to qualify for licensure in mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy or clinical social work. This is why the two year psychology programs have been nearly eliminated from licensure opportunities. They tend to be merely for educational purposes and non counseling human service positions. In Nevada, the extra rigor required for licensed counselors has virtually pushed doctoral level psychologists into academia or testing, engaging in very little therapy, now taken over by the master’s level clinicians. The worst thing is most undergraduates are entirely naive to these complexities because the universities aren’t explaining the various opportunities. I even know professionals who don’t fully understand the differences.

    Typically many PsyD programs have "automatic" scholarships that they will give students once they are in the program. And then students can also apply for more once they are in the program.

    I think it depends on the state in the U.S. Some may be able to get licensed as an MFT or LCSW after their masters which usually salaries range from 50-70,000 a year

    You can’t have a private practice with a masters?

    Good question! You can have a private practice with a masters in counseling or social work once you become licensed as a LPCC, LPC, MFT, LMCH, or LCSW. But if you have a masters in just clinical psychology with no license, then you can't independently practice and do therapy unless under supervision. Or unless you get your PsyD/PhD and take the EPPP licensure exam to become licensed as a psychologist. A masters in just clinical psychology tends to have more restrictions then a masters in a counseling program devoted to helping their students become licensed counselors so it depends on the area, school, and state regulations etc., Hope that helps and makes sense

    Hi there! Thank you so much for explaining that if you want to be out of school sooner and only want a master's, you should do your degree in social work or in counseling, since certain states restrict master's degrees in clinical psychology. I am about to apply to graduate schools, and my hope is to one day open a private practice. Do you think my income would be significantly less with a master's in social work/counseling than with a PhD in clinical psych?

    It mostly depends on the state that someone lives in. There’s other states that allow people to do private practice after years of supervision. Then there’s other states that require people with a masters in psychology to only practice under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. So it just depends where you live

    Hi! It’s hard to say, a masters in social work or counseling may sometimes charge just as much as a psychologist so depending on the success of the practice they may make just as much
