    I originally wanted to get my MFA in creative writing and become a professor. I knew it was a long shot, but I was willing to take that chance. I applied to schools twice (first time I got in, but didn’t get enough funding). After getting in the second round with decent funding, I decided teaching wasn’t for me. I’m now waiting to hear back from an MA in higher education program that’s highly ranked and has a guaranteed internship. I’m hoping to become an academic advisor.

    Hi Kaibie! I've worked as an academic advisor for the last 6 years at a large university. I recommend looking at job openings now even without a masters. So many schools are hiring for advisors and not getting a lot of apps, and many times the school will pay for your masters degree (that was at least my experience and many of my colleague's). If you are looking to just get started in higher ed, admissions, registrar, and housing are also good places to look for openings without a masters (and have the school pay for it). 😊

    MBAs from no-name schools are really only useful for people who've already been working, and either just became a manager or want to become a manager. So if you are a new manager and have a goal of moving to senior manager or director, many large old-school companies like to see that MBA. I don't see any value of a no-name MBA for someone with no prior work experience. For those with experience, if you're getting a no-name MBA make sure not to overpay. I would put my cab at somewhere around $30,000 and try to go for less.

    It seems you have a misunderstanding of a masters in teaching. It isn’t what you get to become a teacher; it is usually a degree you get to improve your teaching. A lot of districts pay about 10k more/year after getting a masters, so the masters is around 30k, 3.5 years later (rounding up a little due to interest), you are already on top monetarily. That’s not even taking into account better opportunities for growth/leadership roles within the district.

    I plan on getting my Master's in Psychology at some point because I want to be a school psychologist, but I'm holding off on it for several years. Since I'm graduating this year with my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Special Education, I want to teach for several years before I become a school psych. My ultimate goal is to be a special education teacher and that can be ripped away from me if I get my Master's in Psychology too soon because school districts are too quick to throw teachers into any position they feel like, even if that's not what the teacher wants. I understand the extremely high need for school psychs, but I want to be able to work in my dream career for as long as possible before getting promoted (I see it as a promotion because I would get paid more and I'm still in the same area, just different position)

    I think that's something the host of this channel, Shane as he's called misses the point a lot with. While yes if your passion in life is working as a...musician, you'd probably die of hunger. But if there's even a slight chance you could make a living of sorts with that dream job, it is absolutely the best choice to make!! A dead end job is just that, dead end. You can make a lot of money in it and have a hobby or side hustle on the side for the stuff you enjoy, but it's not going to be the same. Working in something you're passionate about regardless of pay is incredibly rewarding, this being a clear example of that. Sad really that supply and demand has lead to social and mental occupations to be undesirable...

  • @marksmith4892
    @marksmith4892 Жыл бұрын

    Shane for the "S" degrees I would agree not the same as TEM but do not overlook the fact that there are many careers which COMBINE S and TEM, such as a Biostatistician. For a degree like that the ultimate credentials would be, for example, a bachelor's in biology and a masters in statistics or even I believe there are undergraduate degrees that blend the 2 and then one could go on to learn even more with a masters. That's a good route because statisticians are rare but even more rare is a biostatistician. That's great pay and excellent career security. Another possibility is working for polling companies or as strategists in politics. People with Poly Sci degrees are paid crumbs BUT people with Poly Sci degrees AND statistics degrees are paid quite well in the field of politics! Now this isn't an "S" degree but it just illustrates my point that when S or non-STEM degrees are combined with TEM degrees, specialized career prospects are strong and can get a person into very interesting work. If someone just enjoys politics or biology for instance and they have a knack for TEM then they can have their cake and eat it too. I think people should know this so that not everyone in S or non-STEM will have to abandon their dreams or at least not entirely.

    @@RupertFilbert i just thought of another one which is clinical psychology. one can get a degree in measurement or something like that. in essence, such a person would be a low-level statistician who knows enough to conduct tests of people whether psychological or pedagogical, that sort of thing. IQ testing or designing IQ tests and interpreting the results would be an example. Again this is highly specialized but because so few people know TEM topics, it automatically elevates career security and pay -- forces of supply & demand can't be beaten.

    Good list! For MSW I would have ranked it on B, (not that I’m biased or anything 😅) only bc it’s one of the few that’s a a professional degree in that if you want to be a social worker you HAVE to have an MSW. Not ‘you’ll have a hard time finding a job if you only get a BA’ but you cannot be licensed without an MSW. Also with MSW school prestige doesn’t matter as much as other master programs, what matters is where you do your placement. So you could go to a cheap state school and your resume will be looked at the same as someone who went to NYU.

    The reason you hear so many conflicting accounts on data science is because it's so new that there really is no clear cut career path. If you want to come out the gate and be a labeled data scientist, then a masters degree can help with that. There are multiple ways to start a data science career without a higher degree however. To quote one of my favorite sayings, "A data science career isn't a ladder, it's a jungle gym."

    I would say getting an MBA does matter based on the school. But I do believe getting an MBA can help you if you're trying to get higher position in corporate compared to those who only have a bachelors. The connections and networking opportunities are endless when going to grad school. For example, An MBA student can get a consulting job at one of the Big 4 or so, unlike an undergrad business student might have a hard time getting in since there's so many and its a competitive job. (My thoughts, but I would love feedback)
