Mastering Misery - Part 2: The Backpack
Ойындар
With reduced carry capacity, we might as well make our way to the Gold Mine and get that backpack. It will help in a lot of ways, especially because of all this salt we are carrying for some reason. Shouldn't be too hard, but it will be cold. Let's just hope an affliciton doesn't kick in...

Misery is like an Old Age Simulator. “After thirty years living on the Mainland, Astrid returns to Great Bear Island to face her Final Journey.”
2nd affliction took 5°warmth from you... It dropped from 8°down to 3°.... What did you say about NOGOA? Campfire simulator? Welcome in your new reality...😂

Who survived to day 100?
I've just stated a new run, only on Voyager but I started in Ash Canyon and goated to the Homesteader's Respite then up to the mine to get the technical backpack!! game changer. Great strategy! I employ quite a few of your tips now after watching your videos. And when I died on my first attempt the other day I thought about your words that in even death there is a lesson (or something like that you said!!) Cheers. I just wish I had started taking notes when I first started watching your videos, cos now I'm like "what did Zak say about so and so??"
Hey zak, your awesome man. I tried to start your new interloper run with you, probably old to you, but your 500 series, and ive got it to where I load the same spawn and follow you and one time I got to day 46. The only differenve in our play, even when I follow your play region to region, is you dont ever stop, and that is what I did, amd it got to the point I coukd barely hatchet furs and not freeze to death, but I have watched your first few videos on your run and have tried to spawn where and when and you get to like day 8 where im at day 18. Either way, your awesome man, this game has helped my depression and hearing your voice is calming. Im sorry I dont got money to be a patron right now but when I can I will give back, your dope man.

Dont worry about any money pledge, my friend. Its a great compliment that you mirror my run. I am glad the videos help and hope you feel well! Stay awesome, friend!
I enjoy watching the misery difficulty, but I don't think I'll play it. I prefer a more comfy difficulty where I can traverse the maps and collect resources without too much trouble.
My second affliction was sour stomach. I'm powering on. Day 8 and not doing bad. Never really played Interloper but certainly will begin once this run is over. Thank you for all the great advice you provide during your videos.
Your voice is so relaxing, could listen to it for hours. I am a non native speaker but i do understand every word, thanks for that! You have a really smooth way to play this game even on misery.
1:11:01 The “what do you want to cure?” mechanic for painkillers is definitely weird. Umm, it’s in the name! 😂 Seems like it should be easy enough for the game to filter / only display the suitable conditions to cure. I laugh in the face of misery mode, 5 out of 6 afflictions is my everyday life 😆 Great episode as usual Zak!
Archimedes is already working on an Outer Misery run. It is very interesting.
An easy solution to the painkiller problem would be for cures to only prompt issues they can cure. So painkillers would ask you which pain you would want to cure. So if you had 2 sprains, you would still need 2 doses of painkillers for the pain, but there is no chance of accidentally trying to cure the sprain itself
I'm in 16 day I preferred to hit the desolation point. I have a bow, a sleeping bag, 10 arrows, rabbit gloves/hat, and the moose skin is already 90% dry, I will wait, after the coastal highway I will hit the TWM and also get a backpack. I think that after day 45 with a broken body you can survive at such a desolation point, exploring the world 100% is unlikely without treatment, at least with birch

This is my new favorite series, i was checking channel all these days.
I’m so invested in this series! Tysm for all your valuable commentary 🙌
I completely agree with the stuff about rose hip tea. I think it would be better if there was some way mechanically to “learn” what does what (maybe similar to reading but slightly more accessible in the early game) like how rose hip tea is a painkiller and rieshi is an antibiotic, that way there’s not that strange way of taking medicine/drinking tea that has a use but does nothing because you didn’t technically use the right prompt
Zak could say "Smash that dog food!" like some KZreadrs say "Smash that Like Button!"

Food cooked in pots and skillets (pies, stews, etc) have a small chance to cause cause food poisoning if they are low condition. I think it's 20% when they are ruined, and safe above 25%? It's something like that.
Has anyone found a can opener on misery? I played 4 rounds of it over the 4th, stopped at the PV farmhouse every time and didn’t have it spawn once. Same for the bedroll - anyone find a bedroll?

Nice video👍🏾
i was watching ddrjake and i noticed food cooked from ruined food like pies would get 100% condition, maybe you could also store cooking ingredients in the cat tail stockpile to make use of ruined food!
37:53 the youtuber Even Dark found a hacksaw on the misery in a container near the forge and that was not intended to happen because you can't really find any loot table items in random containers, and the hacksaw he found was invisible, also you cannot find hammer in a region with the forge but there used to be a bug where you could find invisible hammer in a container. Or you could also find an invisible stim in a first aid kit on interloper difficulty

Rose hip tea cures the pain not the sprain. Curing pain is optional. Need to use a bandage or rest to cure the sprain and its effects. The game uses bad wording but the two part fix to completely heal sprains has been in place a long time.
Good job
I've had a 2nd affliction 3 times so far and each time it was the same one. Reduce sleep to 7hrs and reduce recovery by 50 percent. And yeah you can get it on day 5 the best run I got it on day 9
46:12 Zak finds matches and a Jerry can at the same time. Which one will excite him more??
I cant help but notice you're not slowing down to loot, which causes your double hunger and tired arrows to remain while you loot. Is that on purpose? I would think in this mode you need all the full-stomach that you can get.
@Zaknafein
Ай бұрын
Kinda - I had a tutorial on that mechanic but usually neglect it out of laziness.
To be honest the functionality you are talking about in 1:12:36 is much more simpler to implement than what is right now, they should just not give the possibility to chose what you want to cure but give a tea an effect that all the pain is being removed while drinking. I Think it is just lazy as they are now just copying pasted functionality from different item that Works as it supposed

40:08 Thank you, Zak. I am having a nice time
I disagree with you about the clothing, You mostly say it's useless (mostly in episode 1). IMO it is very useful to get very good clothing as fast as possible (depending on your 2nd affliction, I think double insulation layer from day 6ish will be meta). In the mid game, it will help you sleep in caves without any fire (with upgraded bedroll), saving lots of ressources. Frigid bones makes it even more important to have the best clothing you can as you lose time making more fires, staying longer at each fire to warm up. You need to drink so many teas with poor clothing, that you spend a lot of time collecting/crafting those teas. And when you get "haunted mind" affliction, it really begins to be a game changer to get the best clothing possible. Health regeneration at night it really low (as you no longer get those crazy buffs from sleeping hours 8 to 10). To summerize, learn Ptarmigans spawns very early game (+1 sewing kit + some cloth). For mid game, learn as many birch bark locations as possible as it's the best way to still be able to use HP as a ressource before "broken bones" kicks in. On a side note, I do like your plan. I do it very differently, going to the gold mine and Summit only late days 30's, early 40's. I might get ideas from you on my next run ! Edit: coal spawn locations are also going to be very important to master !
I imagine by now you've got the map pretty well memorized as you go directly to the the spawns for the gear you need. Do you ever use the detailed maps people have made or have you just learned where everything by playing?

I've got a simple question for you Zak. Would it be a viable exploit to make a fire with a couple of sticks and then take torches until the fire is out? Is it possible to take more torches than the amount of sticks, wood, or coal could provide? Could you then use those torches as fuel for another fire, thus having an unlimited supply of sticks?
@Zaknafein
Ай бұрын
Yes its possible, but from what I recall you need to be high enough Fire Starting. I think Wonz did this years ago
So I'm day 50 on misery. To be honest it wasn't that hard. This is my first run at misery and I made it to 50 days pretty easily. I've played this game for a long time. I know maps like the back of my hand. So you start in PV. Hit a few key loot spots then off to AC for backpack and crampons, picked up combat pants at homesteaders on the way. Then to TWM summit where I got a hacksaw so I could loot up there. From there I bee lined to ML. Got a bedroll. Then I went straight for HRV for hammer and mackinaw. From there to Broken Railroad to forge. By the time I got to broken railroad I had a mackinaw and urban parka, 2pairs of combat pants, 2 underwear, 2 wool socks, 2 wool sweaters, and 2 improvised insulation. Plus a whole ton of cat tails and food, lots of flour, oil, salt. I was heavy but stocked. Think I got to BR about day 35. Made my bow and arrows and a knife. By this time I had sour stomach and was getting food poison often so i started burning through food. Bagged 4 wolf for a coat. Went and 1 shot the moose to the head, then 1 shot the bear. (I was so on point this game). I swear there's like 15-20 wolves at once out there. Decidedl to hunker down and wait for hides to cure. Day 47 I have my wolf coat and moose satchel. Plus I get broken bones. I have about 80% health. Continuing on from this point is pretty much pointless. The environment is such that you can't really travel without losing some health which means I figure I have another 3 days to play if it decide to travel. Or I whole up at BR which will suck cause there's not much food and you can't eat wolf meat. Guess we'll see what happens.
Still not a Fan of that Afflictions come on Set Days , they should come when certain Conditions are met. Like you ignored the warmth Meter for to long and then it kicks in . People keep complaining it's a shame they took the cougar out as people didn't get a chance to try it out. You could of turned off auto updates! They literally only removed the cougar from update v2.30 from v2.29! You can also revert back to v2.29. Time capsule exists so YOU can play the version you like.

so instead of adding more content to the game, more crafting recipes etc, all they did was to add new mode which will ruin any fun from the game after 5 affliction... great idea, why add more places to cook food at the fireplaces, why add the possibility to craft crude spear or low quality of clothes and make you start naked etc, why give the ability to start fire like real survivalist can, why add any of actual content to the game, lets just add more "story mode" nobody cares for and some useless modes which everyone can do himself in custom mode btw i love when people make mods with more content in it than the actual game has now, its hilarious this game should have mode when you play like an actual survivalist will, make fire without any tools, like they do if needed, craft any clothes from materials you can find or get from animals, craft tools forever cause if there was 1 mine with coal then the resources there will last forever for 1 person, just 1 trolley full of coal will last forever in this game i have the thought that after you look what modders did, you get more ideas of what that game lacks than devs has

"Rheumatic joints", especially killed all the entertainment value for me.. others are somehow managable however annoying they are.. but taking away sprinting ability completely from a player is just bad design.. might as well play as a 80 year old man with a cane in his hand.. the same thing... BTW, the survival mode of this game needs a proper ending before anything else you could add.. the premise "how long can you survive" is the sole reason that discourages me from playing more than 150-200 days on a run.. it should instead be "can you survive till you actually make it alive out this island?".. put an ending like the one in the Hopeless Rescue challenge, but link it to the tales and some other secrets to uncover first.. or, lead the player to a broken boat and give an objective to repair it with intense and far complex crafting requirements.. that would make surviving so much more meaningful..
