Travis Picking is more the fingers used rather than the picing pattern. The most common TP is using the thumb for all the bass notes and never the pinky (and maybe not the ring finger, as well).

Years ago someone showed me that pattern. You're right, it's very useful! I've since found other songs to use it in. For example, you can play Harry Nilsson's Coconut if you slow the pattern down and alternate the root (thumb) from C on the 5th string to G on the 6th string. I've also found country songs where I can slip into that pattern for a bit. It gives kind of a banjo roll sound. :)

Yes the artist who came up with dust in the wind is/was a guitar teacher who came up with the riff as a practice for his students. 🎉

You are SO effective
Just goes to show that a what is thought to be a difficult guitar song can be a really easy song to learn to play. When all Kerry Livgren did was put together some practice finger picking cords. What was hard is now really simple to string together. And just practice. Can take everything from Bach/Mozart to metal to church hymns and play it.

As an alternative, I pinch the A and B strings together on the first beat of each bar. Gives it a tiny bit more depth. Great lesson, though!

This is a random question. Is it bad habit if at times I wonder around the fret board and find unique sounds/shapes that actually rang out with clarity?

Asus4 was hard for me at first, as it was an awkward reach. I found it was easier if I played an Am, then put my pinky on the B string at the 3rd fret. Somehow it was like an anchor to help me stretch the pinky. Eventually I could release the first finger from the B on the first fret, and ultimately not rely on the Am anchor. If that makes sense! Just offering a tip in case others find Asus4 clumsy at first. Meanwhile, I can’t get my pinky to reach G/Am. Oh well!
now "master" the solo too...
