Mastering Color: How Muddy and Clear Color Work Together

Many people talk about "avoiding mud" in their paintings. But mud, or what can also be referred to as muted or neutral color - can truly enhance what I call clear color…vibrant, higher key color. In this video I talk about how the two can work together to create a number of stunning effects in our paintings. I’d love to know how you feel about muddy color and how you use it in your work.

Thank you Marianne - I am currently studying for an MA Fine Art and am investigating the nature of luminosity and its importance for my art practice. This video has helped clarify a number of things for me - especially the impact that a desaturated colours can have in making warm or cooler colours glow.

Very well-explained, helped me to better understand how complimentary colors interact next to each other and the effects they produce. I do see what you describe in each example. Fascinating! Will experiment with this. Thank you so much!

Another well explained concept, thank you. I feel that I need to try it (which I will) to really see what these relationships look like, I didn't get a strong sense of the impact of the relationships on my computer monitor but I generally feel that I was seeing what you described, the clear colours against the muted/muddy tones had increased impact.

@@mariannemitchellwholeartis9922 I'm not one for continuing a dialogue on platforms like this but I found some time today to try this so I thought I would feedback, for what its worth. Truth be told there was no shocking revelation 🙂but I found it a useful exercise, the most noticeable thing for me was that the muddy colour appeared more vibrant against its opposite clear colour, muddy orange/brown more vibrant against blue, muddy blue/grey more vibrant against orange

@@thewub6774 Thanks so much for taking the time to share your findings! I'm glad you found it useful and somewhat enlightening in terms of "the muddy colour appeared more vibrant against its opposite clear colour, muddy orange/brown more vibrant against blue, muddy blue/grey more vibrant against orange" I hope you can apply this awareness to your painting. Cheers!

@@mariannemitchellwholeartis9922 I’m so glad! I think you will love it. For me- I’m drawn to this book for a few reasons : 1st because of its depth of connections to both worlds of science and the arts. It’s amazing. 2nd, how they give you examples of this connection by using art and its healing power on our wellbeing through storytelling and real life experiences. I think you will enjoy how it connects and intermingles the two worlds. Let me know what you think. (Side note both of the authors were interviewed on “art 2 life” podcast a few months back… worth a listen to hear their story. ) 🤗 Thanks again!

Hi Marianne - you do such an excellent job of explaining concepts that can be complex and cause difficulties for artists. You spoke of the clear color as dominant and the star of the show in all cases when it is present... I am wondering if this is the case when a piece is mostly muted color with just a bit of clear color. Would you say that the clear color is still dominant? In what circumstances would the muted / muddy colors be dominant, if any?

Many thanks for your thoughtful and well-thought comment Melanie! There is a "dance" between bright color and muted color - dominant and subordinate - they can go back and forth. Muted color would be dominant when a piece is comprised of mostly muted color... but not always! As you know... this warrants a more in depth discussion! Which we will have...
