Not with this type of music: Normally there are just two performers, the singer and the accompanying pianist. This arrangement makes it so hard to sing those "Lieder".

At first you want to say "Oh, kill the old lady already and let the poor girl sing!", then you see the interaction, the passion in Ms. Ludwig, the challenging eyes in Ms. Vinke, the transformation in her performance, and you realize how demanding operatic singing is and how beautifully it is rendered by great professionals. Before anybody destroys me with nasty comments, I would like to add that I have worked in the distribution of opera recordings for several years :-) Seeing Ms. Ludwig's dreamy, melancholy eyes at the end of the performance is priceless.

Actually the young girl doesn't have a clue and Ludwig could have been far more exigent, but was being nice!

Great lessons from the great singer Christa Ludwig. Very good for me as a lover of singing! Brynjae Hoff

Totally different voice after 9:30 once Ms. Ludwig stressed not to focus on singing/shaping the beauty of the words but to feel the words as if speaking them. Mr. Vinke then connected much more fully with her support and the fullness of her sound. Das waere wirklich toll!!

she is soooo right, and the student got it at the end, but I KNOW how it is, when you meet your ideal, and you want to deliver everything right-and the risk is to loose the actual essence of pieces like these...

Great that Carina Vinke was able to change so quickly her technical and more external approach into relatively simple singing, coming from the inner feeling. Technique, a performance concept and performance practice prevail too much the professional classical music today, I think, so that so often the result is something artificial that does not really touch. Like Christa Ludwig says so beautifully here: „Sing simply“, „do not sing, do only feel“, and - which also concerns the timing: „The moment you feel it, you have to sing it“... All that leads to a touching music experience. Fortunately also the pianist seems to play more and more from the feeling during the lesson.

Vielen Dank fürs Hochladen, Christa weiß worauf es ankommt. Unglaublich supertoll!

Clearly, she is dutybound as a master of her degree to nitpick all the littlest things. This is a master class. The goal is flawless perfection. If she didn't address everything, she would do her job wrong and thus fail her students and profession.

Sicher, wenn man es andersrum versucht, kommt sowas raus, wie bei Netrebko. Die wohl, bevor sie Barenboim getroffen hat, die ganze Form des "Lieds" nichts verstanden hat. Aber versuchte was auswendig zu lernen und dann gescheitert ist.

Respekt vor der Sängerin Carina Vinke! Bei soviel starker Kritik und Unterbrechungen war es ihr weitgehend möglich, sich auf das einfache Singen aus der Empfindung einzulassen. Das Technische, eine zurechtgelegte Interpretation und Aufführungspraxis stehen, finde ich, heut oft zu sehr im Vordergrund, so dass etwas Künstliches herauskommt, das kalt lässt. Wie Christa Ludwig so schön sagt: "einfach singen", "nicht singen, nur empfinden" und, auch zur zeitlichen Gestaltung: "Wenn Sie's empfinden, müssen Sie's singen" - das führt zu einem berührenden Musikerlebnis. Auch die Pianistin ist glücklicherweise immer mehr ins Erleben und damit beseeltes Spielen gekommen.

Nur sehr schade, dass man in einer Mittelklasse sowas offenbar zum ersten mal hört und nicht, wie es sein sollte, gut vorbereitet erscheint und den Text schon lange davor verinnerlicht hat und sich Gedanken gemacht hat über die richtige Empfindung und Interpretation. Man lernt das doch bitteschön richtigerweise beim Einstudierten mit dem eigenen Lehrer. Die Qualität des Unterrichts ist sehr gesunken, wenn Stimme, Technik,, Musikalität und Gefühl nicht gemeinsam einhergehen. Damit das Publikum ergriffen ist von einer Darbietung braucht es idealerweise alle dieser vier Zutaten. Ausserdem sollte auch trainiert worden sein, dass Unterbrechungen einen nicht aus der Konzentration bringen, das nennt man Professionalität. Kritik ist ausserdem eine Sache, die man auf zweierlei Arten annehmen kann, besser man denkt mit und fühlt sich ein, als Kritik immer nur als ungerecht zu empfinden. Empfindungen sollten in Interpretationen gesteckt werden und nicht das eigene Ego belasten, da man dadurch klarerweise verkrampft oder gar eingeschüchtert wird und das ist keinesfalls der Kunst dienlich- auch nicht dem Publikum, das schließlich Erwartungen haben darf, weil es zahlt, um Kunst genießen zu können!

@@user-ic5xu4jh6z Alles richtig, aber leider werden die Studierenden in den Hochschulen viel zu oft zu einer verkopften Interpretation angeleitet. Dieses Zelebrieren von Einzeltönen anstelle dem Aussingen der musikalischen Phrasen hört man in den Hochschulen nur allzu häufig. Und immerhin kann man hier erleben, wie das Duo die Impulse Christa Ludwigs aufnimmt; Wunsch und Fähigkeit zur Weiterentwicklung sind also klar erkennbar. Ich habe vor drei Jahren Thomas Hampson bei einem Meisterkurs erlebt und die Probleme der Studierenden waren exakt gleich.

Die Christa ist eine fantatischer sängerin und artist.Eine grosse kunstlerin.

@@amandaidsounds It takes a lot of guts to put your voice out there like that, for sure. As a classically trained flutist, organist, and vocalist, I can definitely say that I had to get over how personally judged I felt in voice lessons, a feeling I never had during instrumental lessons. Your voice is YOU, and when your musical taste is developing and you decide how you think phrases should be sung, always in the back of your mind is having to be tested in lessons. You feel so exposed, very much how I’d feel if I had to stand in the nude and be judged. Ludwig was SO Tough, SO musical, SO intelligent, but it’s her laser beam focus, VERY intimidating! I once played in a master class for Marie-Claire Alain, and it was the same thing; _ she recorded the entire oeuvre of Bach’s organ works 3 TIMES,_ for goodness’ sake! I had to be scraped off of the organ bench afterward, even thou she could not have been nicer! So I give a lot of credit to the young woman singing!

I wish someone could add subtitles in french, english, italian.

it basically goes: NO no no no no no you´re doing it to loud and fast (to the pianist). Legato. Slow. You´re making me nervous. NO IT¨S STILL TOO LOUD. (to the singer): sing it more normally and lighter. Less "produced" and "singery". No no no no no. Oh that´s quite nice.

@@SleepingTurtle1 not exactly-- she makes a joke of it and explains why. Telling off is something completely other. But Christa is right. You do not let the feet distract the audience from the voice which is what she says.

This is why I never became a classical vocalist -- too much pressure; oh, yes, and I can't sing either!

Ludwig war nie eine Diva. Sie gibt wertvolle Tipps und hat natürlich recht, wenn sie der Sängerin unterstellt, dass diese eigentlich überhaupt nicht weiß, wie sie diesen Strauss in den Griff bekommen soll ;-)

Schwarzkopf was criticized for not allowing the singer to proceed but interupted the singer frequently at the point at which the singer needed to be corrected. Ludwig is doing the same thing. To wait until the song is over and then make the needed comment is too late to be of any use. Schwarzkopf admitted that she was tough and it is good to see that Ludwig is not reluctant to break into the song at the point at which to make the point.

Der Ton macht die Musik. Schwarzkopf was a vicious, mean old battleaxe who'd been so lucky as to fuck the right man to further her career. Ludwig is polite but strict, and her corrections are pure gold. No low blows, just very good and wise teaching.

Schwarzkopf was a bitch who enjoyed making people miserable, nervous and humiliating them. There is no comparison between these two ladies because Christa is total class and extremely supportive and kind to the singer.

Fantastisch zo'n beroemde dorpsgenote! Mevr Ludwig is een superster en een perfectionist. Maar als je gewend bent om met grootheden als Karajan, Klemperer, Gundula Janowitz "und so weiter" te werken verbaasd het niet dat alle puntjes strikt op de i gezet worden. Het begin was wat frusterend voor Carina maar ja de piano hoort er ook bij. Veel succes Carina en misschien tot ziens in de supermarkt. Groet

Genau meine Empfindung. Die Stimme dämmert, als spräche die Seele mit sich selbst, aus den Arpeggien des Klaviers (besser noch: Orchesters) herauf, als hätte sie von Anfang an mitgesungen, als sei sie, neben ihm, ein weiteres Blütenblatt derselben Blüte.

+pega17pl Ich glaube das wäre nicht lange gut gegangen. Wieviele Takte sie wohl bei ES gekommen wäre? Ich finde aber auch dass die Kritik nicht wirklich hilfreich ist in den meisten Fällen hier. Es ist zu selten technisch begründet. ES wäre ihr da schon nach dem ersten Takt in die Kehle gekrochen...

Ich kann nicht verstehen inwiefern die Wahl der Kleidung bei einem Meisterkurs, der zur Verbesserung der eigenen gesanglichen Fähigkeiten dient, relevant sein sollte. Die Aufrechterhaltung von solchigen Etiketten bei Veranstaltungen bei denen sie nicht relevant sind ist altmodisch und gehört sich nicht. In der Welt der klassischen Musik herrscht leider immer noch ein enormer Elitismus. Die Leute sollten sich mal wieder mehr auf die Musik konzentrieren.

Allerdings versteh ich nicht warum sie hier die Sonne hell geformt haben will. "Und Morgen wird die Sonne wieder scheinen" Die Sonne ist also nicht da.

In der Phrase "sonnenatmende Erde" ist die Sonne schon da. Und in dem anderen Satz passt es auch, weil er den Gedanken verheißungsvoll auf den nächsten Tag lenkt. Man hat also Morgen vor Augen - ergo eine helle Sonne. Das ist eben Musik, keine Rechtschreibregel.

With all due respect, she does not understand how the piano works. She'd prefer that the pianist play with no color/shaping with foot planted on the soft pedal- that's not music (unless it's new age).

la intérprete tiene un buen sonido pero más que ayuda en interpretación necesita ayuda en comprensión de detalles técnicos vocales como caída de mandíbula y manejo de labios, no estoy muy de acuerdo con las correcciones que hace esta señora.

She's learning. That's the point of the masterclass.

Problem ist auch das Deutsch. Zuviel rrrrr und die Stimme zu schwer für das Lied. Wie sie es künstlich spricht, ist auch nix. Schaweigen anstatt schweigen...Allerdings ein schwer zu singendes Lied. Ludwig wie immer chaotisch. Erst legato dann sprechen, dann wieder nur empfinden. Sie macht oft den Sänger ganz verrückt, ich habe es live erlebt in ihren Meisterkursen.

Why do you torture us this way? You present us with a view of one of the most beloved singers of the modern age doling out the essence of her wisdom and then fail to enable us to understand what she is saying. Can you say sadistic?!

That pianist is really awful!

Sometimes when you hear this kind of "young singers" and "young pianists" you think: why they actually have chosen music?! The best that such young ladies could do in their lives would just to marry and bearing children, and to play only at home, and to sing only lullabies. Forcing one of the greatest singers of the XX century Christa Ludwig to spend her time with such talentless creatures was a real crime!

Dude, in a lied is like the pianist and the singer are just one... Ludwig always used the same pianist over decades, this is not a singing masterclass.

Es tut mir leid,aber Meisterkursen sind einfach nur imitationen,das hat mit Kunst nicht zu tun,Kunst ist Freiheit und jeder muss sein und singen wie er ist und empfindet,deswegen mögen die Leute keine Klassische Musik,reine Imitation und alle singen wie die anderen....Einfach traurig!!

tu tienes mucha razón, totalmente de acuerdo, incluso cuando no estoy de acuerdo con las correcciones que ella hizo las observaciones a la pianista, cada uno tiene su forma de sentir los pianos y los fortes, de resto es una imitación y no es bueno. Por otro lado, la intérprete tiene buena voz pero su técnica vocal no es buena, más que detalles de interpretación, necesita ayuda técnica entonces lo otro fluye.

Die Vorschläge von Ludwig zur Interpretation versteht kein Mensch. Sie haben den falschen Zugang zu Lied. Bitte ganz normal, nicht singen sondern empfinden. Bitte um Erklärung. Eigentlich erklärt sie gar nichts und technische Details vermisst man vollkommen. Ein weltklasse Sängerin ist eben längst keine gute Lehrerin.

Jot Ge Doch Menschen die mit dieser Art von Musik und Kunst zutun haben underbsthaft lernen möchten wissen sehr wohl was sie meint. Alle großen Lehrerinnen/Lehrer waren oder sind streng und haben nur größter Diziplin ihren Weltruhm errungen...Und am Ende lobt sie die Schülerin.

Meeeeeega anstrengend, allein das Zuschauen! Was Sie sagt, muss man anerkennen, hat aber Hand und Fuß. Wie Sie es aber sagt... "das macht mich ganz nervös" - neeee, du machst mich nervös, Alte!
