Holy cow, it's amazing how fast your channel has grown! Initially found you looking at the Peak Design everyday sling, not as a camera bag though... Guess more like a man purse carrying the kiddos stuff (mine too!) Just bought the Go 2 to capture kiddos out and about for them to look back at. Congrats on the successful year!

Happy Christmas to you and yours ! ✌🏼

The big question is, what is a 'correct' white balance? It's an interesting subject, particularly with modern cameras. Back when I did my BBC camera training on ye olde ENG cameras there was a lot of emphasis placed upon using a suitable white balance for the scene you were shooting. In other words, you need to learn to recognise when white isn't white. What do I mean? Well, a good example is a sunset. If you balanced a camera to a white or grey card during a sunset you would likely get rid of all that lovely orange glow. Another thing to consider is what the camera is doing to achieve a white balance. A lot of people think that if a cameras looking too blue then the camera will boost the red and green channels. What actually happens is that it reduces them, therefore reducing colour information going into the recording. This is useful to know in awkward situations, particularly with mixed light. It is almost always better to balance your camera too red than too blue. It is much harder to remove a blue cast in an image than a red one due to the way colour channels are often handled by the camera. This is of course referring to more limited codecs such as 8-bit, but it can also apply to 10-bit as well, particularly if you end up pushing things in a grade. The outlier is raw formats, for which 'white balance' is merely metadata. Therefore it is usually preferable if you aren't shooting raw, due to the way a camera handles manual white balancing, to use one of the pre-calibrated camera presets, such as 3200K, 5600K, and 6300K etc rather than performing a manual white balance to a card. Those presets should suit pretty much all circumstances you ever need. The only real times when you should look at a white card balance is in awkward situations, such as when you have a mix of daylight and tungsten etc. There are no hard and fast rules for this, though, because white balance is often a creative, rather than the technical exercise it is usually portrayed as.

Would you use this with say an Osmo Action (1)/ GoPro and would you set the custom white balance or do auto? I get the photo side but video would seemingly change a lot more if done outside a opposed to indoor filming. On DSLR/mirrorless it is easier to set and even cellphones with something like Filmic Pro but on action style cams it seems fiddly and not as reliable.

Not sure if it's available on other cameras but on my A7iii, you can't use the "set custom white balance" when in custom recall modes. Which really sucks because I shoot fast-paced hybrid photos, video, some in slowmotion, some regular speed, some fast autofocus, some single point.... etc and I have these set in memory recall so that I can easily switch between these settings quickly just by turning the mode dial. I have white balance cards, but sadly, I can't use them that often because it would take too long to change my settings without memory recall AND also set my custom white balance. The only time I can do this is slower paced narrative film shoots or studio work. Anyone know of any workarounds?

It for sure warms things up a bit, but I would rather start at a proper white balance and then adjust manually from there. On the Color Checker Passport Photo V2, there's a chart on the front that you can use to warm up or cool off your image. Again though, I just use neutral white and then tweak to my preference👍

Absolute pure white isn't actually the best for white balancing. Traditionally balancing to grey was a better way to go. But we only usually white balanced in tricky lighting, otherwise we used manufacturer calibrated presets, because manually white balancing a camera actually reduces recorded colour channel information.

@@DavidManningvlog shooting raw (pictures), WB locked so it's not a variable, none of the settings change, the lighting is static and the camera is on the tripod. I use their program to convert a raw picture to dng and I import it into camera raw as a profile. The eyedropper WB tool shouldn't matter because thats the programs job to balance the colors, including the WB. WB just one of the many factors of true color. Using this just for WB is a pretty expensive gimmick that I could do the same way with a piece of printing paper. To make things worse, the "corrected" image is worse to correct than the unprocessed picture that I do by eye and that's the reason I don't use the tool. Maybe it's fine for someone with a Sony who needs a quick color correction 💀 for Instagram or some small photo session in an uncontrolled environment but if you're doing product photography or anything where the colors need to be spot on it's useless.
