I played high level football so take this from me. It depends on the situation but most times don’t lean, thats not how you get passed the defender. The trick with this skill is to time it when the defender steps on his back foot so you can get him off balance. Because of that he can’t commit to the first one so he probably will on the second one and depending on hoe much he commits you can lean in.

When you’re moving with pace, leaning will slow you down & you will loose your momentum. This works only at slow speed dribbling.

You actually learn from the way the English commentators refer to moves like that, they call it “drop of the shoulder” literally referring to the upper body movement described in the video here. I never knew what they meant when I heard it first time, but it does make sense

step-overs are not (usually) about fooling the defender. they are a bluff to get time, watch the opponent and then moving at the right time, normally as the defender is stepping back or stepping in depending on the situation

Ronaldo was the best ever. Nobody was like Ronaldo and he only needed this stepover to beat anyone. ANYONE. Secondly best, Valencia in Manchester United. He had only this stepover too, and he did it with pace to beat everyone on his wing too.

Its the shoulder drop on the 2nd step over that sells it. But you need to be focused on your opponents torso to see if they commit to the movement. We're talking milliseconds of analysis.
