Walking through how I tackle master studies of John Singer Sargent’s charcoal sketches.
There’s a bit of an audio glitch 1:35 but only lasts 10 seconds so bear with me!
Materials:
- Moleskine art plusSketchbook: 135 * 210mm

Thanks. I've never used charcoal but have bought some and will take the plunge soon. I agree about a millimetre or so can make all the difference between getting a likeness or not. I think you did a pretty good job: I think in the Sargent portrait, the sitter is looking at the viewer, whereas in yours, he is looking into the distance: a good example of a millimetre or less making all the difference.

Great video. Could you tell me which 'overlay' app you used? Thanks.

Thanks! It’s called the overlay cut out photo editor. It’s free and does the job but you do have to put up with a bit of advert spamming 😄
