ABOUT THE VIDEO
Music Theory. Some love it, some hate it - but this video is all about music theory you can actually use! You'll learn how to write emotional chord progressions on piano which you can then apply to any DAW, any song, or any collab. These music theory chord tricks take a bit of focus to understand, but they are serious chord hacks for producers. Big thanks to Matt Johnson (from Jamiroquai), who has been studying piano since he was a kid!

I have learned most of these ideas on my own over the past 10 years (only a hobbyist, but my undergrad is in music prod), but I would have LOVED to have had someone share them with me with the level of charisma and knowledge that you naturally bring, Mr. Matt Johnson. My wife is a huge Jamiroquai fan, and I am thinking that I should be as well. In fact, as I ended up going in a different direction (I am now an English prof at a university here in Nashville), so I want to commend you on your incredibly effective teaching methods. You are a natural teacher. Lots of people may know these musical concepts, but very few people can communicatee them as compellingly as you do.

I love those cases where you find something a bit bland but you can tell there's something there, then you break up the chords into just the right rhythms and intervals, add some passing note movements within those chords, and it just flows perfectly. A really fun exercise is to come up with SUPER dense chords, maybe you have 4x 5 note chords and together they cover ALL the notes, it probably sounds very out there, but try to play the notes individually, balance the intervallic and rhythmic movements by hinting at things other than chromatics, and there's probably a groove there where every note is just right.

Good video, great content. Only thing I’d say is it’s pretty difficult to see the notes you’re playing due to the color grading you do the keyboard, the black and white, and blue make it hard to follow the chords. May I suggest using an interface with higher contrast, or articulating the chords you play verbally?
