ABOUT THE VIDEO
Music Theory. Some love it, some hate it - but this video is all about music theory you can actually use! You'll learn how to write emotional chord progressions on piano which you can then apply to any DAW, any song, or any collab. These music theory chord tricks take a bit of focus to understand, but they are serious chord hacks for producers. Big thanks to Matt Johnson (from Jamiroquai), who has been studying piano since he was a kid!

Yes! Matt is sooo good at what he does. He also co-produced 100% of the last Jamiroquai album. And his new track "Interstellar love"is quite cool too - kzread.info/dash/bejne/gHmCw7Ovgqyro5M.html

Everything Matt is playing sound like instant Jamiroquai! You really know where the root for the sound of that band lies (yes and in the bass...)

I ain't even get into the tutorial but once I heard "pianist from Jamiroquai" I was SOLD
I have learned most of these ideas on my own over the past 10 years (only a hobbyist, but my undergrad is in music prod), but I would have LOVED to have had someone share them with me with the level of charisma and knowledge that you naturally bring, Mr. Matt Johnson. My wife is a huge Jamiroquai fan, and I am thinking that I should be as well. In fact, as I ended up going in a different direction (I am now an English prof at a university here in Nashville), so I want to commend you on your incredibly effective teaching methods. You are a natural teacher. Lots of people may know these musical concepts, but very few people can communicatee them as compellingly as you do.
Matt is an absolute legend.

Yup! He's been playing piano with style longer than most of us have been alive.
When building-up EDM songs (house, deep, prog, etc) it's always of a huge impact to enhance chords as a tension moment. This guy in 10 minutes just taught everyone new 3 years of music theory. Hahaha. Amazing.

Wow thank you! Share it?
This was so helpful..Thank you for putting this together for the community!
I love those cases where you find something a bit bland but you can tell there's something there, then you break up the chords into just the right rhythms and intervals, add some passing note movements within those chords, and it just flows perfectly. A really fun exercise is to come up with SUPER dense chords, maybe you have 4x 5 note chords and together they cover ALL the notes, it probably sounds very out there, but try to play the notes individually, balance the intervallic and rhythmic movements by hinting at things other than chromatics, and there's probably a groove there where every note is just right.
I really appreciate the generosity of spirit that it takes to make videos like this - thank you so much!

Love your channel you really show so much on how to get better I'm new to piano I'm a drummer for over 30 years you explain and show things where it makes sense thank you so much👍
Wow this channel was a great find! I’ve been watching Matt’s channel for about 2 years he makes great content, good video 👍🏾
Finally, not too much talking or explaining, just showing chords, modulations etc. that sound good. Props and a big thanks to you🙂
Good video, great content. Only thing I’d say is it’s pretty difficult to see the notes you’re playing due to the color grading you do the keyboard, the black and white, and blue make it hard to follow the chords. May I suggest using an interface with higher contrast, or articulating the chords you play verbally?

funny when Matt was talking about the trick when you switch the minor chord to a major I immediately started singing "with all my heart, I love you baby" and voila!! Love the video!

And I thought all geniuses were mad!!!! 🤩
It’s called the circle of fifths (or circle of fives/Vs) because each chord is the V7/dominant of the next in the sequence. You get through all 12 chords and the. It repeats.
Matt!!
