Master of Wine: Under $10 Red Wine to Buy Now
In today's video, Bob Paulinski, Master of Wine tastes and talks about an outstanding Tuscan red wine value from Costco. The wine is not available year-round and the offering may vary by location.
The wine is the 2021 Kirkland Signature Chianti Classico Riserva for $8.99. To give you a better idea of the value on this wine, I did a bit of shopping at other stores. As expected, the base level, generic Chianti was often at a higher price versus the Chianti Classico Riserva from Costco. It makes no sense as base-level Chianti comes from lesser favored vineyard sites with higher allowed yields, lower ripeness requirements and often some white grapes are included in the blend which is often attributed to increased quantity but not quality.
Next, comes much more interesting wines at Chianti Classico level, this an iconic representation from the region. This level is termed as ANNATA, although it's rarely used on the label). The vineyard sources are from superior sites compared to the base-level Chianti. The yields are lower, the fruit must be riper, the wines receive longer aging before release, and no white grapes are permitted in the blend. At this level, the wines are typically found in the mid-teens and quickly bump up into the $20 plus range.
As for Chianti Classico Riserva, this is a much more serious wine. This is the level that corresponds to the featured wine from Costco. The yields are lower than basic Chianti Classico, the fruit must have a higher degree of required ripeness, along with increased aging requirements, in this case, two years in barrel and 3 months in bottles before release. In terms of pricing, wines at this level are commonly found starting at around $25, and quickly climbing from there.

@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine hi. It’s the Scrimaglio NV. It’s brut, quite a nice fiz, a bit more fruit (pear, white melon, red apple) than autolitic, touch of brioche, some nice saltiness, nice mousse, crisp acid, nice length and clean finish. Pretty refreshing. For 20 bucks, I’d get more for sure.

The UK supermarket Tesco carries a really good value Chianti Classico Riserva for £10 (about $12.70) although it's often on offer for a a £1 or so less. They have had it on their shelves since the 2009 vintage and the current vintage is 2019. It's full of bright red cherries soaked in assam tea, spicy, leathery tannins with red fruit and herby aromas. Not a 95 point wine by any stretch of the imagination, but good, honest well made weekday red to drink with nice food and relax with!

@bobpaulinskimasterofwine7234 It is under their Tesco Finest brand. As supermarkets go, Tesco's range isn't too bad, with some hidden gems among a sea of mass market brands - have recently enjoyed a very good Godello from Monterrei and a superb St Nicolas de Bourgueil.

Just got back home after a short trip to Italy. Wine wasn't the focus but I did get to try my first Franciacorta, which I enjoyed a lot (didn't note the producer, though). I also had a red Tuscan wine, but not a Chianti.

Nice, you’re drinking well! Tuscan wines have been sensational in recent years. My only call out is that in unusually warm vintages, the alcohol levels can bump too high.

@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine agreed. The more I taste, the more I think 2013s are some of the best drinking Tuscan wines right now. I’m hoping the 2016s will reach even higher heights, but we’ll have to wait and see.

@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine I don’t know much about vineyard practices in Tuscany, but do you think in hotter years less dense plantings or actually increasing yield per hectare could limit the alcohol problem? Or is your sense that that could also mean you get less concentration and complexity from the fruit?
@bobpaulinskimasterofwine
28 күн бұрын
@@ianlutz9600Excessive heat may cause a number of problems from raised alcohol levels, low acidity, baked/stewed fruit character and overly stressed vines. In hot vintages, high pH levels will impact wine color.
Nice experimental shots today. The one from the bottom of the glass actually helped to see the colour. Not sure I've seen it anywhere else, so kudos on that! I'll see if I find the 2021 vintage here; they tend to be a few years delayed as happened with the Gigondas. Cheers!

Great concentration on both nose and palate, bit of a wild structure with high acidity and munchy tannins; I found the alcohol a bit too noticeable when I opened it, but now that it's chilled it's more integrated. The styles have some similar elements. Both show significant influence from barrel aging, both are medium deep in color and mid-weight in body. The CC Riserva has higher acidity, which makes the wine a bit more lifted on the palate.
Thanks for the value alert - I’ll definitely try to find it at my local Costco. CCR are one of my go to value reds. One nitpick: your pronunciation of Chianti dries me crazy- it’s Kee-ahn-tee, not Kee-ahn-tay.

Full natural or agglomerate cork, it doesn’t matter. Purist may disagree, but the science doesn’t support it. Most important is the storage conditions, cool, dark, resting on its side and you’re good to go.
