Master of Wine Discusses PRIORAT, a Great Wine from Spain
Priorat, from the NE part of Spain is one of the worlds great red wines. In this video, Bob Paulinski Master of Wine will discuss what makes the wines so special and unique in the wine world. The core of the wines is Grenache and Carignan, two grape varieties that are often much maligned. In addition there will be a tasting of a classic example of Priorat, along with suggestions of wines to buy. You really can’t go wrong with any of the recent vintages, 2012 to the most recent release are all solid years.

This video strikes particularly close to my heart. I'm baffled to see, everywhere I go in Spain, that virtually nobody knows much about one of the two DOCa's in the country, which is an absolute shame. Sure, it doesn't hit the sweet spot of consumers in terms of price, but it's still a tragedy. Once, to prove the point, I bet my wife that we wouldn't find more than five Priorat wines in the cellar of the gourmet section of a well known, high profile national retailer (El Corte Inglés). There were two. Sure enough, Priorat sings an entirely different song than Rioja and Ribera, but hell, is it a good one... PS: Congratulations on the first thousand!

I agree, it’s not easy to find a good range while traveling around Spain. I bought the bottle on the video in Madrid at a shop called Los Rosales. They had several Priorat. And thank you, 1k subscribers came much quicker than expected. I’m grateful for all of the early support.

Indeed Bob....Priorat is one the top wine Regions in the world and in my opinion one of the more underrated along with Bandol. "Terroir is the Magic Genie of Wine" And in the case of Priorat this is certainly true. Thank You For your expertise and insight. Cheers 🍷💚🤍🍷

Priorat is one of my favorites. And you Bob just elevated it to another level. I will pick up a bottle tomorrow for my NY Strip. Cheers!
Last year I attended a wine tasting held by Frank Roeder MW in Saarbrücken and Álvaro Palacios was a featured guest, bringing a wonderful selection of wines to try. Truly sensational wines. I bought a couple of 2018 bottles of Finca Dofí. They’re stored away now in my wine cellar just waiting for the right day a few years from now.

Outstanding! Dofi is sensational, an ideal candidate to cellar. 🍷
Great video as always! Priorat is my favourite wine region so it's always fun to hear about some producers I'm not as familiar with! I'm currently enjoying a 2015 Coma Vella from Mas d'En Gil in Bellmunt del Priorat and its fantastic stuff (although I might rate the 2014 slightly above it.) Really want to try their Vinya Classificada, Clos Fonta, someday along with the fabled L'Ermita. Also congrats on 1k subs!

Álvaro Palacios (famed genius Spanish winemaker, author of L'Ermita) also makes a more budget-friendly Priorat named Les Terrases; you might wanna check it out before getting ripped by L'Ermita! 😄

@Juan Manuel Muñoz Hernandez I've had that one too! Quite good as well, a bit more darker fruit and dry earth qualities than the Coma Vella I find.

L’Ermita is in a class on his own. Hope one day I can afford a bottle 🤌
Tried my first Priorat tonight. I found it light and smooth, almost like a light version of Cabernet Sauvignon as it pertains to tannins, mouth feel and dryness. Really enjoyed it and looking forward to finishing the bottle tomorrow night.

It should keep well for the second day. Some will actually be made with a percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Great content. Spain has a lot to offer for sure.

Every May there is a wine festival in Falset for the Prioritat and Montsant regions. Worth a visit as you can try them all over a few days.

Thank you for this introduction. I'm going on a solo trip to this region in two weeks. Which vineyards do you recommend visiting?

Celler Crivellé I Valls and Perinet are worthwhile. I suggest booking appointments prior to traveling. With the former, some extremely steep vineyard sites. Torres now makes some very good Priorat, not sure if they allow for visitors. Sounds like a good trip and you won’t be too far from. Barcelona.
